Why is it that the guys with god status can fill the forums with off topic wibblepoo that would get the rest of us flamed til we were toasty?? Take today for example, we got a thread about some bloke on ebay, a rant about people who don't do what they say they would, some guy who is moving for a new job and another about modified J super minis.

I think its a fine line but one thats usually easy enough if it has (ideally retro) car (or bike, boat, etc (theoretically we could include horses! ) ) content, although I agree some are more watered down than others. talk about fish tanks or your new music website and its not the right place. I started one about wierd new stunt cars. result: went right onto page 15 without a single comment. fair enough! it only takes about 500 posts anyway to get god like which surprised me! If it includes cars and still in doubt, add retro content and/or pictures i'd say HTH

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

But it looks like you are making excuses. The same names seem to pop up time after time with OT posts in the general forum. The common factor seems to be this God status. I took a fair bit of abuse for lurking a little while ago, I'd rather be a look and not post anything than post for the sake of status. I am one of the longest standing members and these curse word OT posts seem to be getting more common as of late. Once again , PLEASE can we have an OT forum for the post whores?

I didn't think I was making any excuses, I'd defo get get flamed if I did a thread about retro shoes for example even if some combine it with cars out of despiration for a use to save the thread. still not retro enough. Roller skates! hmm, tries a bit more... still a bit cheesy I give up. only thing is to be fair I wouldnt expct newbies to know ins and outs of the place and they may fall into an o/t trap without realising or caring. Anyways not my rules, I just know this place works 'heaps' better than others. HTH Peace.

Sorry if I am giving cause for confusion. My problem is with GOD status and those who think its something to be achieved. There seems to be a reluctance by Mr Hotwire to tackle certain members of the forum for repeated OT offences.

From an earlier discussion on the subject of an OT thread I was going to just delete the thread... I'll do that in future rather than locking threads... its what I always used to do,.. but some people started getting upset when their totally off topic threads were deleted... Threads about criminals, drunk drivers, little baby children, blah blah blah always turn out very bad... Is it an old car? Is it modified? Then its a sure fire winner, if its not, then there is the possibility it'll get locked or deleted. Don't like that? Go here and see what happens when non-car stuff is the order of the day... If you want that from a forum there are places for it,.. just not here.

Oi!!!!!!!
No hi-jacking this thread. Its important (to me at any rate) ;-) I remember that particular discussion, However it seems that certain members are exempt or that the admin is too busy/otherwise occupied to get to deal with OT threads.

The common factor seems to be this God status. I took a fair bit of abuse for lurking a little while ago, I'd rather be a look and not post anything than post for the sake of status. I think you took the post about lurkers totally the wrong way - the way I see it, it wasn't an attack on anyone, it was an invitiation to new members to say "hello" as some people may find it hard to get involved. The length of time you've been a member here and the amount of posts you have would suggest to me that the post wasn't even aimed at you, but people who have just joined up. I think that regular posters are treated a little more gently for OT posts than newbies... forum politics I suppose. Or perhaps it's that someone who gives relevant input into the site frequently can be forgiven a slight misdemeanor, whereas someone who joins up and posts "MY DOG'S JUST DIED" could be seen as filling the board with unwanted junk... I don't know I tend to try to ignore replying to OT posts at all if possible.

Oh, and an OT board I think is a bad idea. A lot of members use MSN Messenger etc to chat about OT stuff and get to know each other.
I don't really judge people on their post count - there are a lot of well regarded members on here that don't post much.

To be honest,.. we have a community of a lot of people and a hell of a lot of posts,.. 99.9% of which are on the subject of cars...
If you don't like the way I run the place,.. you are invited to go else where,..

Think its sad that after almost 3 years I get asked to leave because I stood up for a forum that is sliding into general gossip and 'look at how many posts I have' But then again if the admin can't be arsed, I peobably won't be missed anyways.

Hell that lurkers thread was a shocking success, noone was being attacked or singled out. I believe we were just curious for people reading and not posting or ever contributing to join in! it can be daunting starting out on a busy forum with updates by the minute, everyday. I was initially put off and sat in the background for a short while, that thread gave newbies the chance to get a word or thread in. theres 2000+ members and a lot are regulars which is great for keeping the place busy, and enough threads rolling off to constantly keep people intersted. Its like a retro car only pub, you have varaious regulars coning in and spending time propping up the bar, and valued customers popping in now and then to brighten the place up when ever they fancy a pint of retro, then a few that just pop in to people watch. cool I think BB summed it up quite nicely, but when ever i see a solid gold OT thread it does take some believing no mater whos written it!

Its funny,.. I just looked at the first 4 pages of the forum (thats 100 threads) and there are 2 off topic posts, one about digital cameras from someone taht does'nt post much (which was redeemed by photos of old cars) and one advertising a new business unrelated to old cars.
98% on topic posts = Win....

My final comment. Thinking creatively here, and 0% sarcasm. really. why not start up an off topic forum, or one on topic with the ability to act as another 'retro pub' but one with no 'topic policy', Just an idea. that way we can do a pub crawl. no offence intended to anyonez.
