This may be a really dumb thing to ask, but here goes...
Took the wife's disAstra in for it's MOT today.... got an "advisory" about a scratch in the windscreen. The scratch has been there ever since we've owned the car (2 years) and looks like it was caused either by a bit of grit getting caught in the wiper, or the blade being knackered at some point, rolling over and making contact.
Either which way, it follows the sweep of the wipers. It's very, very shallow - we're talking microns here, and about 3mm wide. Obviously it's not an MOT fail, but it is a bit irritating.
Question is, can I polish this out of the glass??
Or have I got to put my hand in my pocket and get a pro in?

I'm sure I've seen glass polishing kits for sale, may have been in Frosts catalogue or try machine mart. Its gotta be worth a try.

Someone told me to use toothpaste to rub out shallow scratches on windscreens. don't know if it works or not but atleast your windscreen would be free of plaque ;D

It'll also taste fresh all day! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, I think I've seen polishing kits about as well, if it's only a shallow scratch then it shouldn't be too much of a problem to polish out I think.

I suppose the toothpaste idea is something to do with it being slightly abrassive. By the way this is not an early April fool.

Hey dude, I had some really bad scratches in a set of pop outs I bought a couple of years back. Spoke to a mate of mine who's a double glazer and he gave me some stuff they use in the biz, and it came out a treat. Some weird powder and you just add water.
Pretty sure I've still got some laying around. Drop me a text and I'll leave some in your draw when I'm in the office tomorrow night if you fancy!

You can use toothpaste but it's normally used after using something a little more abrasive, like bathroom cleaner. no, really! trick is to use something fairly abrasive first, then cut down on the abrasiveness until it's polished smooth - obviously don't work it out to a wide area cos it's never going to be perfect and you ain't gonna paint over it unfortunately there's no grit ratings on household cleaners so you just have to use what feels right.... or proper scratch remover. that'll work too. and probably make your car smell less like a branch of Wilkinsons

If you need something mildly abrasive just use T-Cut. Although I think you'd need something a bit more... hefty... unless you wanna be scrubbing for hours. Putting an advisory on a 3mm scratch in the windscreen is f*ckin' ridiculous in my opinion!

Go to a jewelers & buy some "Jewelers Rouge" from them - its an adrasive cloth for exactly this purpose............we use it at work to polish scratches out of glass.

Well looks like I'm gonna have a go at it Friday morning. I'll try first off with the cheap / free options with what I have to hand (toothpaste, cleaning products t-cut etc. If that doesn't work I'll try a more professional approach - either which way I'll get some pics up and let you know the results. As for this: Putting an advisory on a 3mm scratch in the windscreen is f*ckin' ridiculous in my opinion! At least I know the guy is thorough! The garage in question has a reputation for being particularly good, and as the car is our main family chugga for transporting offspring etc. I'd rather have a bit of piece of mind and a comprehensive list than a slightly dubious ticket! I was quite pleased with the outcome though as the car only failed on a dodgy earth to one headlamp (the same thing it failed on last year! A rather irritating recurring fault!).

Well, when you put it like that I can see your point NickB! As for me, I like Stevie Wonder to do my MoT's ;D. But then I don't have a family or owt to consider so I can be a wreckless cretin for a bit longer
