I paid a quick visit to the Morris Minor Owners Club forum the other day in search of advice and stuff, and I couldnt belive the amount of people on there who give their cars names. Mostly its girls names, and some even go as far as including them in thier signiture, signing off there posts with "from Norman and Maureen" (names changed to protect the innocent/insane). So the point I'm trying to make here is how many people on here have given their car a name/personality/share of the marital bed, and what do we think of this kind of behaviour? Personally I cant stand it, I mean I know what its like to live, breath and sleep cars, but at the end of the day its still just a car, a tin box with wheels. Am I on my own in thinking that these people who invent personalitys for there cars are just sad deranged fools? Discuss please.

I'm with you on this one, I always thought it was a practice more often done by women than men. I cant remember ever naming as vehicle.

My Austin A40 was called Stan, my yellow S110R was called 'Bessie', my Vivas were called 'Viva Denang' I & II although mostly I call my cars by their names given at birth...I call my Cressida 'The Cressida'.

Its not the actual naming that gets my back up but the whole thing about giving the car a personality. "Susan" was not upset because you left her outside last night, "she" just has moisture in "her" distributor. I even launched into a rant at my mate dave the other day after I caught him talking to his mk3 and calling it Betsy. There cars you fool, you cant hurt there feelings!

But...do boys give their cars girls names & vice versa? I've named some of mine, but only for ease of identificaton when there's more than one of the same,or very similar model. -- eg:- 2 Cortinas...one's called Kurt..the other's the Cortina. 2 Volvos....Vlad & the beige thing. Mostly,it seems that I only really call them by name when the name is "you ****ing heap of doo doo,why won't you start?----***t!!"

It's a very silly practise if you ask me. OK I can kinda let "girly" girls get away with it. But middle aged men who own MGB's and Minors? No bloomin' way. That's probably compensation for the fact that their wives won't shag them anymore. My other half insists on naming cars....there's even a system, apparently....2/3 doors and it's a "boy" car. 4/5 doors is a "girl" car. (something to do with more orifices! ;D) So she has owned Shaun, Geoff, Bernard and Betty. I don't really understand, but there you go. She doesn't "name" my cars (usually as I don't keep 'em long enough!) - they just get reffered to as "that old pile of curse word..."

out of the 4 cars these were the names and current status:
renault 19 - maud - stripped and scrapped capri 2.0s - caprice - rotten away and scrapped fiesta 1.1 popular - hit a tree doing 50, indisguishable as a car - scrapped 1979 escort 1600 ghia - no name - alive and well (*touches wood*)
which is the reason my cars do no longer have names ;D ;D

I`ve only named a couple myself, neither after women. My first Skoda was Gonzo- an alien that didn`t really fit in and The Count, because, well it is number two. Pretty much the extent. Making it a family member or anything more than that would be just a little sad.

When the O/H was learning to drive she frequented a learner's forum.... someone on there sugested that the MK2 Astra estate we had at the time should be called 'J-lo' , because it had a big bum.....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Well, my Merc is called Wayne, and my Pon(g)y is called Steve. Just kidding I don't really mind naming cars... I don't really go in for it myself, but I don't object to it. Giving it a "personality" is a bit.... sectionable though! I call my cars all sorts of things. Most of which would fall foul of the swear filter

I named my GT lorna, after the irritating blonde in the Italian Job. The name just suited ;D
My girlfriend is the one who gets silly about names and giving the car a personality.
My GT is just a curse word, or whatever other name I chose to call it when something goes wrong ;D

I think that it's just the MMOC..... I don't have proper namers for my cars - the Sprite is just 'the Sprite' or 'the red one' or occasionally 'the rollerskate' ;D. The Amazon is similarly just 'the Amazon', 'the Volvo'. 'the blue one' or 'the heap' (my first car was known as 'the shed'...). I don't really believe in naming them as though they are people, or giving them personalities. However, Mrs Nick B's theory for whether they are male or female is very amusing ;D

My VW van is called Agnita,.. because it's Swedish Charlie's car is called Neu, because thats what the number plate says. My Golf was called Ahab, because it was big whale like car compared to Neu, but that got changed to Abraham. Then again everything in our house from the washing machine to the TV, to the shelving units have a personality... So sue me,..

I've always had named cars, usually because the female influence in my life has named them - more recently it's the job of my daughter to do it, she can't bear a car without a name! I've had... Philbert the 1303S, because it's german and that name means "Bright" - it was bright orange. Kelly the G40, because the numberplate contained KLY Suzi the Audi Quattro (that was my doing:) ) The Scirocco doesn't name a name - yet - although i'm sure it will get one. My vote is for Heff cos it's brown with leather inside, also Heff was Rocco's best mate in the Rocco's Modern Life cartoon... sci-rocco... getting there....
