what do we all know about spraying matt black? (not the forum member!! ;D) is it the same process as spraying a gloss finish? I'm assuming that flatting back would be silly... anything i should know about? special primer or owt. does it highlight or hide poor panels... away you go then... Rob

Same basic prep work, I think it does more to hide duff panels, but I could be wrong. I'd get the bodywork dead smooth before I did a matt black job, hot rod style

Ahem, I just had to reply to this one, didn't I ;D Personaly, I actualy prefer satin black.... It hides a certain amount of poor bodywork, but not everthing (unfortunatly ) Bear in mind that it's porous (like primer) so any rust that's still there tends to come through. Also, it does fade and go 'grey' after awhile, and marks quite easily. Oh, and bird by-products eat through it..... If you can live with all that.... it's great!!

If you spray black primer, it's porous and the panels will rust underneath it (unless you don't take the layer below down to bare metal, but this won't give a smooth finish). However you can get satin black or matt black paint mixed up which has all the properties of normal paint, i.e. weatherproofness, without the shine. they add something to it in varying quantities to give a different level of mattness. dunno how birdsh!t affects it though

all good advice, cheers guys, satin i think is what I'm after... ... we've got a pretty good paint supplier in doncaster, maybe they can advise on the 'matt with gloss advantages' paint (I'm SURE thats what they'll call it ! )... [ i.e. weatherproofness, without the shine] just seen the pontiac (?) - seems silly to risk it tho - hey, ill ask the experts, thats what they're there for ! ;D

Ok then, lets look at doing this properly. Bare metal, etch primer, build up some grey primer to get it dead flat anda good few coats of matt or satin black. Finish off with a satin laquer. That should make for a paint job that would make most hot rodders moist! Not that I used to spray cars or anything

that sounds easy - not sure what the surface I'm spraying is like quite yet... obviously trying to avoid are metal !!... satin black sounds good - maybe a satin lacquer would put my mind at rest about the porous qualities.. (ps:the 'ill ask the experts' comment wasnt disegarding all your advice - just that they may know about mixing the 'special' paint... ) cheers . . .

depends whether you want to spend a morning on it every couple of years, or a week on it once i guess.... dmifreak is right in that bare metalling followed by all the proper prep and primering will look best, especially with a satin laquer. this will indeed look the nuts. you get out of it what you put in. personally i don't keep cars long enough to notice the difference

Had a few matt/satin black scooters over the years. Some people flat back with light oil/WD40 to protect the top coat, never tried it myself though. Barbeque paint was popular at one time as well ! I've never had any rust problems at all (well no more than with 'normal paint). I've currenlty got Plastikote matt black on with metal protekt primer. Seems ok so far! Jawel used to sell synthetic truck/commercial enamel for about £18.00/5ltr not sure if they did a matt black though.

You have to remember, when I talk about paint, its strictly rattle cans ;D
I've found that a wipe over with white spirit brings satin black up well, and maybe builds up a certain amount of protection?
