If I have std VW 14" steels on my Rocco (5J ?), will they be ET35?
Now, as far as I understand this is the measurement from the inside face of the wheel that attaches to the hub, and the outer rim on the inside of the wheel (?)
Based on this: if I bought a set of 51/2Jx15 ET28 wheels, they would stick out 1.6" more that my std wheels?

Offset is the measurement between the inside face of the hub mounting part, and the centre of the wheel. I always have headaches with offsets . Best plan is to suck it and see in my opinion! If the tyres rub the suspension leg, buy spacers. If the tyre rubs the arches, roll the arches ;D

if the arches don't rub either, then more lowering is needed ;D ;D ;D

Right......... Rocco wheels are 5J*14 ET28 Mini Steels are 5.5J*15 ET45 Toyotal Steels are 6J*15 ET45 Now, if I went for the Mini steels I would need at least a 1 1/2" spacer so the rim doesn;t foul the suspension, and they'd stick out 1/2" more than the Rocco wheels. For the Toyota steels again I would need a 1 1/2" spacer, but this time they'd stick out 1" more than the Rocco wheels.......... What I'd like to know is: A) What's the maximum amount a wheel can stick out from the arch of a car before extensions are needed? B) What's the maximum width of spacer people would recommend? C) Are there any 5.5J*15 ET28 steels (apart from the G60 rims)? D) Does anyone know the website that still sells Passat 15" rims new? Cheers..........

For the purposes of the MOT, wheels and tyres can't protrude at all from the wheelarch. By the looks of things, the Mini wheels' offset is only 17mm different - OK so they're half an inch wider too, but unless the original Rocco wheels were a VERY tight fit in the first place, I wouldn't have thought you'd come up against any problems. Unless I've got it all round my neck (and sometimes I do!!) the ET45 offset should sit the wheels a bit more inboard (by 17mm), so if you measure the clearance between the original rim and the suspension strut (easier said than done!) you should be able to see how much room you have to play with. If they do foul the struts, I wouldn't think you'd have to space them the full 17mm to get them to clear everything as they usually leave a good two inches of clearance at least. This is all just me thinking out aloud, so to speak, but in my head it works like the above!!

The original wheels on the Derby were ET 50 - where as the Golf/Vento steels that are on it now are either 48 or 45. The Offset should be stamped on VW wheels on the face of the wheel in-between the wheel bolts. I'll check mine at lunchtime P.S; your mini wheels will only stick out 1/4" more (& 1/4" further into the inner arch..... I think

I'm probably going to go for the 6*15 ET45 Toyota ones......
I'll go down and double check mine in a bit.
Rocco = 6*14 ET38

Yup - the MK3 Golf/Vento wheels are ET45 - you would have thought that they would be all the same

Yeah, you would have thought!
Going to bid on the Toyota rims and get 20mm spacers.

Going to bid on the Toyota rims and get 20mm spacers. I'm a bit confused (what's new... ) If the original Rocco wheels are ET38, and the Toyota ones are ET45, that's only 7mm difference. Unless you want to bring them out more and widen the track? But if you're after just correcting the offset, you'll only need 7mm spacers, no?

But if you're after just correcting the offset, you'll only need 7mm spacers, no? That would depend on whether the Toyota rim was the same width as the Rocco ones, but being (if I've read correctly) they're .5" wider as well as having a more positive offset, it means more of the rim will be sitting inside the arch closer to the suspension so the 20mm spacer would be required to negate the width and offset differential... uhhhh, if that makes sense?

For the purposes of the MOT, wheels and tyres can't protrude at all from the wheelarch. I think that the tyre tread mustn't stick out from the arch - if you can see the tread from above it's a fail. So this is a pass. That's not official, just what I've always thought. I think the law is concerned about spray coming from the tyres on wet roads. With the tread covered this isn't an issue.
