any thoughts - its running the wider 5.5x13" spit rims and has the rare lenham long body hardtop which is why I bought it. also has an interesting history - it was taken off the road in 1978, mothballed with a coating of oil and resurfaced in 2004 by the guy I bought it off. body and chassis are very solid just need the brakes overhaulling and a full engine service, clutch hydraluics and kippered too. I fancy keeping it fairly standard but a bit of stick and stretch/poke

initially to get it on the road, so that'll be tyres, brakes, engine service - the basics really. then will focus on suspension to go low. the rims on it are the desirable 5.5x13". have got a gob of dish but don't stick out too much. the regualr tyres are something like 155/70/13 so will look into suitable lower profile tyres for a bit of stretch. might sell the rims and get something slightly wider - poss a 6"
i've also got a 1972 mini clubman with a 2l 16v engine that is near to completion so need to get that done first (there is a thread on here somewhere but haven;t updated it for a while as no decent pics to get excited about). ;D

Hmm, Mk2 Spit is my favourite Nicely tuned 1147 complete with tubular 4-2-1 factory manifold and the hardtop adds a bit of interest too . Have to say I'm not keen on the mirrors or big side indicators - they look a bit like randomly applied TR ones? I reckon you should sell the steels and find some nice period alloys to set it off nicely.

keep the suggestions coming in - I need support here . bit of a dilemma at the moment regarding wheel and tyre combos. the current rims are GT6 5.5x13's - quite rare. as the spit has a 95.25 PCD theres isn't much about on the alternative wheel front that has got plenty of dish. these GT6 rims do though, so gonna keep them. the current tyres are 175/70/13's but my plan is to fit 175/50/13's but i'm not sure how they'd look in on the 5.5's - too much bulge and not enough stretch? then i'll lower it ;D photoshop anyone?

If your up for a trip down to bath, then you can have a pair of 175/50/13's to try. They are a bit perished, but would do for checking and you can have them for nowt.

Cheers for the offer but i might be OK - have been doing a bit of homework and will be going with 165/55R13 rubber. this will give a low profile, not as much "wall bulge" as the 175's and are cheaper @ £37 per corner fitted at etyres. found this useful tyre diameter table at www.duttonownersclub.co.uk/faqs_wheels_tyres_hubs.htmthe standard set up is a 175/70 tyres with a diameter of 576mm. the 165/55's i'm judging will have a diameter of around 520-530mm, which is about a 25mm lowering of the car. i'll then chop the front springs to lower the arches on to the wheels. i'll have to see how the back looks and it quite droopy already. i have found out that i can fit chevy corvette rear air shocks which can be pumped up/down to adjust the ride height (about £50 delivered from the states)

have stripped out front suspension ready for clean up and repaint. considering it hasn't moved for over 30 years, its nit too bad - lots of flake but nothing too corroded. dodgy patch repair and over sill flakey:- trying out new rims:-

the wide white steels are much better IMHO they give it a bit of the road rallying look
nice find though! succes with your work on it!

suspension components are currently soaking in some bilt hamber deox-c rust eater. they'll be in for a few days as its a bit cold in the garage - pic before I added the water (the white stuff is the deox-c powder):- pic of the results later this week.

have got these off ebay for £50 - 5.5x13's. picking up tonight. tyres are 185/70/13 which might be a bit too beefy for the front. wll it look a bit daft if i put some 175/50's on the front (bit of rake?):-

Not criticising or saying it's wrong, I just don't get it

rather than trend, it was more to do with the physical size of the tyre and its proximity to the wheel arch. a 185/70 tyre has a wall height of @129mm. with a bigger bulge, i think they'll hit the front arches. i have some 175/50's in the garage with a wall height of 87mm. coupled with some lowered shocks, they won't exactly be skinny. remember it still be 5.5 wheel with a 175 tyre. i'll give the 185's a try first tho
