So the head gasket issue has been resolved? What was the problem?
I think going the Red Top route would be a little more involved than sorting out the timing on the Slant...

Ok quick update on the car. Git it running at last and it was a simple error that stopped it running, when I say error I mean idiot owner. So runs sweet and was until the exhaust downpipe gave out and popped and banged. Replaced it with a new one I purchased off eBay a while ago whichever needed modifying to fit. Spent all afternoon sorting that and fitting it. Fitting was nitemare as its all underneath and awkward to do. Tightened the last one to find I couldn't get the ring spanner off the nut at it was tight against the manifold. At this point I left it to look at again tomorrow. Just that to do now and other few bits and back on the road.

Top marks for persevering. I'm sure that you've come perilously close to a can of petrol & a match on more than one occasion though ! I can only echo what others have been saying ; unless you REALLY are over the car, then you'll absolutely regret punting it out. Once it's all sorted again - just think of the grin you'll be wearing again, when your behind the wheel of something other than a boring metal box -that all the other plebs are driving?? Individuality is the name of the game.

Glad to hear you have it going again, what was the issue with the head in the end ? The oil leak I had on my Astra was entirely my fault, I won't be making the same mistake again though !

Ok the issue was I was setting the timing up wrong and it was running the wrong way, backwards so my fault and a week or two before realising the problem. But red faced about that. Next problem is the down pipe I bought sits on the gearbox crossmember so I've sourced a good four branch manifold but it's in Shrewsbury so need to fetch it this weekend . When that's fitted I need to sort a fresh exhaust as the one mystery machine and the boys made is broken , my fault as I broke the weld and it's not repairable. So I'll sort that with what's left underneath, most of its salvageable so not a big issue hopfuly. Then on with putting bits back on like the bonnet and should be on the road again, fingers crossed it should be ok .

Ok no real progress other than I bought a tubular exhaust from a guy on Facebook , mistake as it is no good what so ever. Dosnt fit and was full of the worst welding I've ever seen. Managed to get the weld cleaned up but upon fitting , it seems to be out and won't bolt up to the head properly. Also it sits tight against the chassis and gearbox. So after another £40 or £50 to sort it out it's no good. Back to square one. Don't want to admit it but that is the final straw now so I'm looking to part with it soon, just fed up with throwing money on things that are either broke or just curse word. Much thinking to do now as it will kill me to do it but enough is enough.

Road trip sounds good I'm at my wits end now with it. Everything I buy or do goes horribly wrong lol I've cut the bad but from the manifold and now on the look out for a y peice to suit the manifold, I did wanna use the four branch but looks like I can not at this time. Meltdown I'll have what you don't need and put it on mine for the moment if that's ok

Ok I've been thinking of doing a red top conversion on this car now. Not sure what I need to do it but I'm considering doing it. I need to know what I need to do it. Obviously an engine and gearbox but what else is involved. I don't want to take much value of the car and I know people will be against modifying a classic. So advice needed from the retro rides boys would be good.

Ok after hours of messing around with the four branch manifold and trying to get it to fit I've been given a standard exhaust manifold and downpipe by meltdown on here, many thanks nick. I fitted it and it's right where it needs to be under the car and away from the gearbox cross member. Just the rest of the exhaust to fit now and fingers crossed back on the road. Just a few bits to tidy up and then sorted. Bonnet needs to go back on and a few little bits sorted out. Going to try and drive it this week coming up so see how it goes if I get enough garage time. Big thanks again to nick, owner of the yellow magnum coupe that's undergoing a big change.

Ok exhaust on and sounded better but I have to set the tappets now and they are proving a nitemare to set. Seems to be to tight and engine won't fire up now so back at it again , one thing after another but I'm loving it now as opposed to hating the thing. Mojo back and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Not long to go till she's back on the road?

Ok not much to update apart from getting my manifold sorted and exhaust done. This has happened now. Just waiting for a few bits to get it back up and running now.

I like that inlet manifold,
Means you can get a decent carb on to the engine now.

Yes it's a chance to get a carb that I can easily tune and should be better than the twin strombergs that were on it originally. Updates this weekend with a video of it running hopfuly. I am looking forward to s drive in it as its been off the road since last September. Mot runs out in September so I want to use it before then.
