Today was a bit of a washout due to the weather, so I decided to fix my Jeep (turned out to just be a stuck closed thermostat rather than the head gasket I feared!), and tear the engine on my GSXR750 apart to see what the noise is... More updates soon though, I promise

Think I mentioned earlier in the thread that a good source of cheap double-glazed units is, unsurprisingly, double-glazing fitters. Have a word with your local ones and let them know what you're after. Hopefully they'll be removing older units from somewhere and instead of dumping them they could let you have them cheap.

Alas no, lots of other things occuring in life in general (some good, some bad!) mean that I can't devote the time to this that I'd like to...
Will be trying to do some stuff after work in the evenings, but even then time is limited!!

As Bazza said - I know our lot had the wrong size showed up for 4 of the replacements - useless! Can be sold on of course - worth a look. Top notch work fella - can't have been easy in that heat. All this physical labour - you're putting us IT geeks to shame Good luck with the next installment.

Another day, another update! I started the day building the pillars up a bit, they're slowly following the walls up - think I ought to spend a bit of time building them up to meet the walls... Must buy another 44 bricks for that. I decided that as I'm a bit boracic at the minute, I'll just re-use the old windows from the original garage, and when I get up to needing the lintels above them, I'll use big ones so that if I do want to replace the windows with UPVC ones in the future, I'll have the lintel in place ready for it. 2002Gimp (Phil) came round to give me a hand again, it's much easier with 2 people. Not a massive amount faster, but physically it's a lot easier... By luncthime, the first window was in, the first course of blocks was finished and the 2nd course was well on it's way to being up. Who's that crazy man trying to break in to my garage...? Had a quick break for some lunch then back at it. Other window went in, that course of blocks was finished and then another one went on - finished at about 6 if I remember rightly. There's only 4 more courses of blocks to go now until the walls are done, so realistically 2 days work for us, or 2 evenings and a day.... I might get a roof on this thing this year yet! I think the hardest bit with doing these blocks is the fact that you have to place them by holding them from the top with your fingers, and at 20KG each, that ain't much fun, especially as I'm at chest level now - my wrists and hands really ache today... So I'll finish LPGing the Jeep today rather than building!!

I'd be doing catch-up with those pillars. I think it's worth building them up with the wall as you go, using the bricks acrossways to tie them in for more strength? Especially with a single (not cavity) wall. But it's looking good; a nice space.

Are those pillars tied onto the wall? The pillars in my dinky little single garage arnt and with the constant slamming of the door they started to come away from the main wall. Had to be rebuilt with bricks tieng them into the main wall.

The pillars are tied in with metal ties, I'm not good enough with the brickwork to do it in a traditional manner!
There's no danger of me moving out and leaving this garage, don't worry on that score!!
Now I'm going away for 3 weeks out of the next 4, so don't expect much in the way of updates, but I'm confident that the roof will be on by the end of September!

Hehe, I got back this morning, am on a training course wed/thu/tue/wed and am away again this coming weekend (from Friday), so I'm afraid you'll have to wait just a little bit longer... A day off at the back end of next week is planned though, so hopefully another course or two will find it's way up!

No worries! I'm getting closer to buying the house I'm after which will need a big garage building at the bottom of the garden Omly problem is the house is costing more than planned so I probably can't build the garage I want for a few years. I may have to make do with something less perfect.

Guz needs his cement mixer back now (obviously I don't mind, I have had it for a year longer than I said I would and he's never asked for a penny for it! lol). Has anyone got one for sale?

Had this problem a few years back, after looking at overpriced bits of tat i bought a new one from Wickes for £150. Used it for the project, and then sold it for a £100 a year later, cheaper than renting ;D

Wow, only just stumbled across this thread tonight and spent the last hour or so trundling through it. Much kudos to you man, that's an epic project you've tackled there and it's looking good. Much kudos to your Mrs too for being evidently very understaning
