Of course, with the doors getting close to completion, my thoughts turn towards the best way of securing them now - all ideas welcomed!
Then it's wiring time! Obviously it will be SWA from the house to the garage (~30m run, 16mm 3-core I think - to allow me to run anything I want in the future...!), to a 5-way consumer unit in the garage (a 3-way one would be better, but nowhere seems to do them). The circuits I need are a 16a main power circuit, 6a lighting circuit and 32a circuit for the beasty twin motor 28cfm compressor!
I ought to glaze the side windows and build the other side door too I suppose...!
More money then..... lol
EDIT: Anyone know where I can get cheap fluorescent strip lights from? 5 or 6 foot ones, I need 8, maybe 10...!

Cheers, I'l check them out A quick bit of work when I got home this evening and that's both doors hung now (and the hinges straightened out on the other door too). A chance encounter with a neighbour who popped round led me to ask if he happened to have an electric plane I could borrow - turns out he did, so I borrowed it and took a few mm off the remaining door and hey presto, perfect fit! Incidentally, when planing something that's over six and a half feet high (with the door on it's side!), a Range Rover makes a perfect platform to work from! Happy days Hopefully tomorrow will yield the T+G being put in and the doors looking a little more like doors....!

Cheers Lewis and everyone else for your words/advice/checking in and having a look Quick update from a spare 10 minutes I had this evening (been putting fences up and varnishing a floor today... booo!) - managed to get one of the doors nearly 'fully populated' with the T+G - gives a proper idea of what they will look like I'm hoping to find the guide for my (dad's) circular saw so I can cut a piece of T+G for the last bit of the door - unfortunately it's not quite as I'd planned it. Bother. lol It's also why the last piece of T+G isn't screwed in - so I can fit the last piece and then secure it all properly!

Cheers Grizz - I don't consider anything that I've done to be that skillful - as far as I'm concerned, anyone can do it, just need to think about it a bit and get stuck in! As I believe you said in a previous post 'you just get on with it'! Managed to get the T+G on the other door in yesterday (inbetween fatherly/stepfatherly/sonly/floor varnishing/fence putting up duties!), so here's how it looks now. I'll find the circular saw out tonight and hopefully have them both filled in completely. Then I'm going to make and install a couple of drop bolts to stop the doors flapping about - I'm sure I've got some round bar somewhere....!

circular saw ? rip 'em down by hand ! should only take a couple of minutes, lazy bu*ger !!
up the workshop our big doors are secured from the inside only, its a 3 lock job getting through the side door but makes sense to us. i'd recommend decent mortice locks with extra hardened steel plates to prevent drilling out of the tumblers, and extra plates shielding them externally too. make sure doors can't be lifted off hinges too. don't risk losing everything for budget locks.

for cheap strip light try any local shops that are closing down , schools that are having work done over the summer , big building sights nearing completion.

Only just caught up on this Martin, you've made some great progress there! I managed to buy a pair of doors for the 'back' of my planned garage for £80 of eBay, hardwood with stained glass windows across the top. Would have cost hundreds to buy them new or make them. Starting to clear the bottom of my garden but still no firm date for the start of my build. I'll do a thread on it though, when the time comes.

Man, with guesswork like that, you're never gonna win the pub quiz! lol I've actually been doing little bits here and there to it - the other side door is almost finished and will be hung this weekend - that (along with a lock on just one of the side doors and the last few bits of glazing to the windows) will make it secure. Well, aside from the big gaping holes in the front door of course.... Trouble is, I've got no money for continuing it any further at the minute - so can't afford any wiring, lighting, glass for front windows etc. so it's sort of come to a bit of a standstill for now. Maybe I shouldn't have bought the Lexus... lol Ho hum, I'll find some stuff to sell after the summer holidays (less people on ebay during the summer months!) and see what I can do then. On another note, I've got a load of insulation (cheers Phil!) that will keep the 'workshop end' of the garage warm at least! mrabody - if I can find a way of getting them collected, that'd be great, cheers! Guz - I'm not lazy, all my hand-saws are blunt.... honest! Cheers for the comments everyone, it'll get done one day.... In the meantime, all offers of cheap or free stuff (I'm after 30 odd metres of 16mm 3-core SWA if anyone's got any lying around! lol) are greatly appreciated!

Glass should not be an issue.... go to a double glazing company and tell them what you need and reclaim it from their skips, I know modern safety glass is shatterproof and explodes, but surely they still do single pane stuff replacement. That said, it may not work, just a thought. WRT Lights, again I would litterally stop at a sparkies van and ask him about refurbishments, and see if you can score the lights that way. Also contact local office maintenence/renovation guys, they often replace lights etc. When I get to building my woodwork room, which will only have a pair of interior cottage pane french doors (under a carport overhang eventually) no windows on the sides, due to where it is going. My neighbours sons work in office refurbishment, and Mickey has said he can get me some 7x4 foot sheets of toughened glass, they will make up a large proportion of the sheds roof, so at elast there will be light that way. Stuff is certainly out there if you look around.

I know you're right Grizz, I'm just having a lazy few weeks (well, lazy in terms of the garage, busy in terms of gardening/prepping the house/garden for swmbo to start childminding....). I'm determined to get it weathertight and 'electrified' before winter sets in, reckon I should've bought an estate rather than the Lexus, for 'skip diving' (with permission) duties! Cheers, Martin

Not much progress as it took longer than I thought, but I've got a lock on my side door now! All other doors will be openable from the inside only, in a top-secret styleeee Tomorrow (or this evening should I get off my backside... smart money's on tomorrow...) should see the other side door finished

Well, a bit more glue, a bit of sawing, a couple of security devices and here we have it, the garage is (gaping holes for windows aside) secure! For the first time in the build process, when walking in through the side door (with lock and handle!) whilst the front doors are closed, it feels like I've been 'in' the garage, rather than in a part-finished building! Happy days!
