Come across a weird problem on my car.
I've been steadily removing trim and 'de-plasticising' the polo, and it appears that at some point in time the car has been sprayed (or clear coated) with the trim panels in place - so now they are off there is an obvious colour change and 'step' in the lauqer in one side.
The laquer on both sides is ingrained with dirt along the line of the bum strips - this seems to come off with LOTS of buffing on the good side, but on the other side its sititng in this 'step'.
Is there anyway of remedying this without sanding the whole bloody side of the car down?
Thanks!
Tim

I'm having a similar problem with the Cadillac which was resprayed with the rubbing strips on and has caused a step in the paint. Has be be sanded down.

Hmm ok
Wondering if I will get away with very gently wet sanding along the laquer 'step' to smooth it off, clean it up and hopefully make it less obvious.
Although I'm a bit worried i'll just end up with matt line down the side of the car...
Do you think P2000 would be fine enough?
got to repaint a wing as well as i've 'smoothed' it through the the primer in places :-( Really struggling to get a smooth shiny finish to laquer up.
P600 -> p2000 too much of a jump?
Sorry fopr endless questions...

P600 to p2000 is too much of a jump really.
very gentle wet sanding may do it. Start with the finest grade and work down if it doesn't work.

I'll grab some p1500 then - got to nip to halfords anyway as out of paint. brought grey primer for some reason as well when i needed white I'll give the p2000 (wet) a go on a section of the laquer step that will be hidden behind wheel arch trim and report back. Cheers!

Interesting thread especially for myself as I know I'll never use 2K and every time I ask for advice on 1K I get told 'just use 2K' Something I have been trying to get an answer on for a while is: can you use celly thinners in acrylic (1K)?Reason I ask is that I have quite a lot of (Metalflake brand) acrylic lacquer and the UK supplier has ran out of the same brand thinner. Celly thinner is easy to get but I don't want to risk using it in the acrylic as I did this years ago on the advice of a local paint shop and 3 weeks later the paint crazed. That time it was Mipa C10 Klarlak 1K clear 50:50 with celly thinner. I later found out that this stuff is supposed to be used straight from the tin so not sure if it was the celly that caused the crazing or just the fact that I thinned it. Mipa C10 1K clear....do not put celly thinners in it acrylic lacquer...redundant without acrylic thinners?

I have "standard thinners" here which seem to work with celly, 1K and synthetic! Probably work with HS basecoat as well. Mine is made by Lechler and is still available in paint factors.
Shame that Metalflake in the UK are running down stocks as its good traditional stuff that.
That Mipa stuff is RFU and you don't thin it as you say. I use similar stuff.

Thanks Al Not sure what RFU means (am not sure I want to know lol) but I remember when I bought the stuff in a paint factors in one of the rougher parts of Glasgow and asked them for a data sheet the shop went quiet and they looked at me as if I had asked for something illegal. That's when I was told to thin it 50/50 There were no instructions on the tin really and it wasn't till years later when I got internet that I found a data sheet. I have since used it unreduced and had no crazing problems. I really like the Metalflake stuff and they were nearly giving it away when I bought those tins a couple of years ago. Thought id ask acouple of basic questions in here rather than start another thread, hopefully keep all the info in one place. I'm going to start prepping next week, cars a 1983 mk1 astra so I guess it`ll be celly thats on it now.Paints pretty good so just needs a flatten off ready for primer. Ive got a leccy da sander so whats the best grade pads to use? don't want to be taking too much paint off. And for door shuts ect am I better off with scotch pads?

I'd use 800 grade with the DA and scotch the door shuts.

I would use a 2K high build primer personally. There are some great ones on the market. I'd stick with one brand through the whole job to avoid possible complications. Maybe a silly question but does 2K high build primer contain isocynates?

You could probaby paint a small car with 25 rattle cans. You'd have a sore index finger at the end of it though.... Not if you go to Wickes (or other DIY store) and buy a spray can trigger.

This is my go to for paint advice... whilst you don't claim to be a pro, you have done a cracking job!
Useful advice on using celly, rather than the usual... "use 2... my mate dave used it and he hasnt died yet"
Ill try to remember to upload pictures of my mini which I should be painting next week

Thread revival. Never painted a car before but having read this and watched numerous utube vids I'm thinking of having a go. What is the law now on what paint you can or cannot use or buy? What paint is available for the diy bloke that is safe to use without all the equipment. I have a 1969 Daimler that has rough paint,I have rubbed down the clear coat and am now down to a smooth original base. Do I have to take it down to bare metal or can I put primer onto that? Could I use an electric spray gun? are they any good? I have fully renovated my car mechanically but do not have the funds for a good pro respray, so would just like to get it all one colour for now so that I can use it. Cheers Steve.

Montana ‘white’ aerosol graffiti paint range. That’s all I’m saying. Quicker, easier, cheaper than rollering. I’ve only flat and polished the bonnet. Rest is how it comes out of the tin. Nice and shiny. Used 9-10 cans. Very economical way to recolour or refresh a car.

Looks good mate I'd be happy with that but I would like to keep mine the right colour, I have some paint mixed up by my local paint store in aerosols in the correct opalecent silver blue that I was going to use just where necessary and it isn't to bad where I've used it so far but I'm not sure about doing the whole car with rattle cans.

Just a quick note to say do not use an electric spray gun, they're fine for inside (as in for a track car interior) but they do not move enough material to lay down a nice coat on the outside. I did the inside of my Puma track car this weekend and it's great, tried a little bit on the boot to see how it went and it will all have to come off again. Came out like snow.
