Awesome!
Saw an 86 for the first time today in Northwich, UK spec Red over Black Levin like this one, was on a set of Minilites. Was so impressed as I absolutely love 86s and that was the first time I ever saw one.
Cool thread, been looking for a period AE86 road test for a while, top work!

Nice thread, I wish Autocar's tests were so comprehensive nowadays. ..Cheers, Greg. Seconded. Nowadays autocar and what cars' tests seem to be the same. They consist of: 'This car is s**t because it's not a Golf. Buy a Golf'. That's why I don't bother reading the majority of motoring mags these days - they are all slowly turning into lifestyle magazines that sometimes happen to be about cars. I have a pile of the old style CAR magazine at home, which pretty much stuck to the same page layout and format for 15 odd years. Then they decided to change the layout and the overall size, and dribble on about Golfs and Priuses endlessly. Being bored about being told how I can coordinate my new aftershave and iPod with my brand new TSI Comfort on finance, I often put them in the bin after a week or so if they ever appear at home. Evo is often a good read, but can have a tendency to disappear up its own more frequently then I like and I find it very hard to relate to a bloke with a 100k + salary whinging about how expensive it is to run a Murcielago!

I used to go to college in Northwich, have you taken the hachi round some of the local roads? They're spectacular, especially the one out of Great Budworth that takes you past the garden centre

Hey dude, nice car, made all the more impressive as it was my first 86 spot Didn't notice the reg, as I only got a glimpse of the side and rear end. A mate saw you a few weeks ago and was telling me, was so annoyed that I wasn't there to see it lol. *promise to self* I will have an AE86 within a few years

ah, memories of bombing about in phoenixC's corolla coupe circa '95, '96 and early '97. great fun going sideways. when the body was too far gone it donated its engine and box to his brother in laws avenger rally car.

I love old car reviews. Who would've thought that the Corolla would become arguably the most sought after of the entire list?

How cool is that? ^^ Oh, and never mind that interior noise, I'm fine with that... After studying the "Database" and the performance sheet I'm rather surprised I'm almost driving one well, except: - Anti-roll-bars - LSD - 4 HP less arriving @ little higher rpm - almost the same performance figures and gearing ...and more Time for new conspiracy: Has Toyota copied a 105 series Alfa Romeo instead of the Escort, which is often mentioned as a blueprint for the AE86. What do you think? (Worth it's own thread?)

Transport Source books are brilliant for these old reprints, but are unfortunately very hard to get hold of for most cars now If anyone has a full Manta test (1.8 or GTE) I'd love to see it!

So true! That almost makes me weep. I remember being at a car auction in 1990(ish) and a silver GT went through. Loads of test but a scrape on the door and quarter panel that would've needed 50 quids' worth of filler and paint and it sold for butttons. How different it could have been if I'd bought it and invented drifting.

I don't think I have any Manta tests, but I will check, trouble is my oldest ones are 1982 and the magazines where a big bigger then A4 back then and my scanner is only A4 size so they are to big to scan. Scanning off at load more at the mo, will post up shortly.
