cars are basically by nature really dangerous in most normal situations,,,,ie if i'm going along a country road at night and due to the nature of oncoming car headlights for up to 5 second's i'm relying on the road being basicaly straight,,,conforming width and clear as at about 50 mph ive covered about 110 meters whilst being totaly blind of the anything in front of me even with dipped headlights on cars that have had upgraded lighting
the main thing is that differing conditions can turn light entertainment into danger,,,,,,,,i reckon someone hanging the rear out around a corner in the countryside that has a CLEAR VIEW of everything is reasonably safe (occasional light entertainment),,,,but driving at 100mph + down the same road is really risking it,,,,(a definate lose situation) so its a case of knowing youre limits and what consequences there were if the limits/conditions were exceeded (the old fellow obviously wasnt thinking about the downsides of colliding with things whilst doing 45 meters per second)

he took the risk and he got nicked for it thats the risk he took good on him for still being a car nut at 78 though . however i do think the emphasis is to much on speeding and not on the lack of common sense in this country which is basically down to the governments lazy way of going for the easy target if they spent more time stop tail gaters and bad drivers instead of people who may step over the speed limit a little the real accident rate may actually start to go down a bit ,but as long as there money to be made they will always target the easy option .we know the risks and its up to us if we wish run them sorry for the rant

Seems a lot of people are behind the old dude and I don't want to cause/start any arguments, But I have to say I'm with alistairk on this one. They're both being total morons. Yeah I'd love to still be looning around at 100+mph at 78 too. But on a track or private land!! I might only be 24 but as a profesional driver dangerous driving really does wind me up, There's being silly and there's totally taking the piddle! don't matter if it's a country lane, Motorway, Town or housing estate. It only takes one innocent motorist, Cyclist, Pedesrian etc to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and it's game over. As they say, Speedlimits are there for a reason, No ones going to debate 5 or even 10 mph over, But that is plain dumb Guy deserves everything he gets IMO So your the boring slow moron who's always in my way when I'm trying to get past.

I don't see the connection between being a car nut and driving like a tw@t, whether the guy's 18 or 78.

Speed does NOT kill, poor driving does! If i was tailgating someone (even at 60 mph) and the law saw me, then i can expect a ban! Same with driving fast through fog etc, these things are clearly dangerous and should be dealt with accordingly. Speed in the wrong place is dangerous. Speed without awareness is dangerous. But just to say "speeding is dangerous wah wah obey the law or you're going to kill somebody" is a bit blinkered i reckon! Phew, off my chest Time is life. Speed saves it ;D

whilst being driven abit dangerously,,,,,,he had quite a nice car,,,,,,i love the way almera style things are available as either relatively boring fwd washing machines or as very capable awd turbo machines (probably the motive behind trying to illegaly race a skyline) I wouldnt say no to one,,,,apart from the price of running it,,,,and supposed engine bottom end issues

Amazing, the governments of the world are on a roll with scamming money from the motorist. They lie, they cheat, they produce buckets of scandal, they doctor stats, they brainwash (ever seen those signs at the side of the road suggesting '10 accidents in 5 years!' but they never mention the 2 million who made it through ok for example), they have no interest in the fact some cameras have caused accidents, so long as they make money, etc etc etc etc etc.Yet, do a ton in what may have been a perfectly safe, quiet and well known enviroment for what may have been a stupidly short amount of time, in a car built to do much more than that, in the hands of someone quite capable and you are apparently "setting a bad example"

Just my 2 pence worth before this gets locked.
I don't think it matters weather he's 18 or 100 he was still speeding and driving dangerously end off. I personally think he got of lightly, age isn't a issue here and those that think he's great for doing that speed at his age need to grown up a bit and think of consequences.
What if you was pulling out of a hard to see out off junction like you get in the countryside and had him coming towards you at 100mph and you didn't see him until the last second?.

it's all a load of curse word really. some people just can't drive properly, and the government can make money out of us easy. Pish, if it wasn't -10 degrees outside, i'd go for a blast now

I think its right that he got busted. Anyone else would have so why not him? Doesn't mean its not somehow quite cool that he's still got some life in him, but he was still being a bit of a tw@t. Racing on any roads is utterly dangerous and deserves a lifetime ban. Going fast on a straight line on a motorway/main A-road is a different kettle of fish. Speed limits are there for a reason - its not the speed thats the issue, its the ability to stop/control that speed that is.

If they were driving at 100mph the entire time then I applaud them. Serious skills on a road 6 metres wide and continuously winding.
What I think is more likely is that they were driving within limits, and when a straight stretch appeared they pushed hard. I think there's a very important bit missing, and that's "speeds of upto 170km/h."
I'm not going to lie, there's plenty of times I've done something similar. In my Mini I'll "hoon" along B roads barely wide enough for 2 cars, and if I can see it's straight for long enough I'll nudge 3 figures. People shout about speed limits but how many UK single track lanes are there marked NSL?! I drive on them scared to go above 30mph in case a car comes round the next corner, but I'd be well within my rights to drive along at 60mph the entire time. If I crashed sure someone could accuse me of negligent driving, but never speeding.

To see the road he was on, go to google maps australia and look for Brandy Creek Road, Warragul.....only twisty at the top, but quite a few side roads. Do the streetview to see photos of it.
Oh and he is a moron for doing that sort of speed on public roads.

...because all roads are the same, right? With exactly the same hazards, the same amount of other traffic, and so on?
Don't get me wrong, i'm not applauding the elderly chap (i only hope and pray i've still got some 'go' in me in 50 years time) but he was only doing just over 100 mph, i don't see what the fuss is all about ;D

I have never said that he should not have got busted he should have its illegal. What I am saying is I speed simple as that, when I grew up doing an apprenticeship at a truck main dealer every mechanic their messed about in cars or trucks, they used to drift tractor units around the industrial estate and see what they could get out of the truck with the speed limiter disconnected. To me that is what being a car nut is and you cant help it its in your blood. The roads that I speed on I know, so I know what to watch out for yes accidents happen and when they do I take full responsibility for them. To me it surprises me how many of you say your car nuts (petrol heads) then go straight to the rule book and come over all police inspector like. The same people like to hint at a bit of drifting private land wink wink or go on about tuning turboing or bike carbs ;)on their daily driver, must be horrible having all that power but only using it once a year at a track day . Then they sit down for an episode of top gear and feel like bad asses. Its the same when I take my bike out for a blast to the coast you get there and every one is quoting horsepower and saying they got a hayabusa but when you cue up in the line for the burger van how come I'm the only one there who is covered head to toe in dead flies and there spotless. Also you seem to think that doing 80 90 on a motorway is ok, it doesn't matter that you are surrounded by a stampede of inexperienced drivers and if something goes wrong you've got a multi car pile up. He was in the country and your saying that if one car happened to be at a certain place at a certain time it could have been bad. The law might not be on his side but the law of averages was, anyway rant over.

god point well put. i also stated the guy knew the risks and took the risk of getting caught i never said i condoned what he did just that it was good see a guy of his age not being one of these annoying and dangerous old duffers that cause lots of accidents by driving to slow.
i say anyone who says they don't ever speed on a public road is a hypocrite even 1mph over the limit is speeding and you wouldn't even know you were doing it i tend to drive by looking at the road and using common sense (you know the thing thats not used much these days by a lot of people ) not my speedo

Not at all fella, I never purposly get in anyones way or hinder progress, and it's VERY rare u'll find me under the speed limit. If it's safe enough to over take I'm never an issue. I never said I don't speed either, like I said, No ones going to debate 5-10mph overspeed. But what this old chap was doing was plain dumb. Infact my lil saff TD is the slowest car i've ever owned, but I love it to bits, it has nothing to prove to anyone and neither do I. Just because I'm a petrol head and enthusiast don't mean I need to be full throttle flat out all the times does it? Surely not? If so I better close my account now and buy so new trainers. In the lorry I NEVER speed, I'm fitted with a tracker and watched by several hundered computers nationwide, So within 5 seconds of me breaking the speed limit, My boss knows, His boss knows, Infact everymanager in the company could see if they so wished, Data is also logged indefinatly so for example even in 5 years time they could still go back and see at 9:45am on 8-1-09 on the A41 at cosford Driver 15621 was doing 46.8mph in a 40mph limit.. They know what road I'm on, the speedlimit for that road, everything! Anyway I'm drifting away from the point here. And yes I do "play" Only monday in all the ice I took a few back streets for a little slow speed throttle tickle on the bends and took the unit at a little TOO harsh an angle down the yard to get my trailer and yes we/i do take the consiquences of our actions on the nose. I even like a spirited drive in the country side too. But 100mph on ANY ROAD for me unless it's a track, or other acts of totally idiocy. No thanks. That's just asking for trouble big style And i agree with the above post that says the gov't need to spend more time/money on educating ppl on using common sence and less on speed limits. But with the ££££ cam's bring in, They aint gonna worry about that. So call me Moron if u wish, I get called all sorts alot worse, water of a ducks back. ;D
