Finished mounting the front woofers. Invisible to the unknowing passenger. Still need to do some work on the rear shelf so that it sits nicely. At the moment its too far back meaning the magnets on the rear speakers foul the boot lid springs when you open and shut it. Yesterday was a terrible day though, the Viva's officially getting old

Mate, top marks to you and the GF for a top car, I did say i didnt like slammed cars, but for some reason in white your cars looks perfect, even if its does spark up on the slightest bump LOL... Very very impressed with the car.... OHHH and Craigs misses told me to say good bye to your misses, bit late but better than never Toodle pip....

Cheers Paul it is a bit bumpy and grindy, but some VW fans pay silly amounts of money for the same effect so I still see the Viva as great value for money ;D I wouldn't say mine was slammed though, just significantly lowered. My exhaust has now been improved slightly so it doesn't bang on so much, but I'm still saving up for a shamm special. Thanks for the kind words anyhow. Marvin certainly didn't disappoint, looks and sounds great. Could always tell when it was Marvin moving off in the morning Will pass on the message. I hope they and you got back ok without too much of a headache.

Is there a 'Photoshop Requests' section to RetroRides? I want to put Coggers' front lip on mine but I'm sick of having to constantly find and download new trial versions.

I was supposed to have this week off from work which meant I could get on with getting the Saab on the road and preparing the red Viva for engine removal. Instead I've been playing silly buggers with the white one. What was meant to be a few service chores has turned into a 'get the Viva back on the road' mini-project The car dropped a lot of pressure on the way back from Hertford at the weekend so I thought I'd get a new pump in yesterday and get it out the way. Basically, after much fiddling trying to move the sump enough with the engine in situ, I got the new pump in, came inside and saw a warning from Paul B about how things can go wrong. Come this morning I try start her up and find things have gone wrong. I now also have a oil leak at the rear of the sump. A new gasket set is coming, and then I shall have a second, and thanks to Paul, a more educated attempt at the oil pump. So, while I'm stuck without a car, I thought I'd do some other jobs on it. A couple of days ago when looking under the car I noticed a small split in my steering coupling so ordered another. Amazingly, the job of replacing it was plain sailing and went to plan, but the old coupling was rather worryingly a complete state. This is only 9 months old... Also took the time to check over all the suspension bolts and make sure they're all nicely tight, which they are. And squashed the exhaust rubbers a little more with some cable ties to reduce exhaust movement and hang. I've also got a misfire that's getting worse and a new dizzy cap hasn't sorted it. Obviously there are a few things to go through but nothing I can do until the car's running.

I'm getting in a right pickle at the moment I got the pump back in in the correct way on Tuesday and tried to start. It was didnt start but was clear it was the timing so I turned it through 180 deg, put the dizzy back and tried again. It started, and really well too. Was idling beautifully smoothly and picking up speed as it warmed up so I went to get my timing light. As I was setting it up it cut out and wouldn't restart. I had another fiddle with the dizzy and replaced the earth wire as it looked suspect, tried again and it started again, but was rough. As I walked round to the engine bay to adjust the timing again, it cut out again and hasn't started since. I've tried all sorts. Cleaned up the dizzy with leccy ignition, cleaned another with points but neither made a difference. It's getting a signal through all the leads and a healthy voltage into the dizzy so I don't see that it can be the ignition side. I don't think it's the car either, it was only a month or two ago I rebuilt the carb after some trouble and it is getting fuel to it. I'm not sure what else to do and it's causing a massive headache it's my only car on the road, I have a job interview tomorrow and if I get it I won't have much time left, and a 280 mile round trip to RRG11 fast approaching

Pallet30 - What I'd od for a Firenza! Enjoy, I'll track down your thread and bookmark it
elcappo - Thanks, I'll give it a go if there's a Mac version of GIMP. I'll take a look.
dfejk - I didn't get it sorted in time, it was only tonight I got it running without misfiring. Turns out the dizzy was sitting properly and would 'jump' out of the oil pump drive, hence the car losing ignition and cutting out. It would then be 180deg out which is why I was getting so confused. I then further remembered that in my muddles, I put the old offset drive dizzy back on, when the new oil pump was centre drive. I swapped over the leccy bits with a later centre drive dizzy which got it running.
Next problem was trying to get it running nicely. I set the timing again, and thought I'd take the moment to properly tune the carb as I knew it was running very lean and had curse word gaskets. Using an old CO tester I tried to adjust the jet by squeezing a wrench in between the carb and exhaust manifold - ouch! Funny things were happening ad no matter what way I turned the jet, the mixture would lean. So after a lot of fiddling with different carbs, I took the original off and fully rebuilt it with new seals, valve, gaskets etc. By now I'd missed the gathering, and was just trying to get it running. I set the carb up from step one as it says in the manuals, and after some more fiddling the CO came back at 4.8%, so I tried to lean it out a little. Next thing the CO was reading 6%. As a last try I pulled the choke out at and ran a little better, so the next day I put another half turn on the jet to richen the mixture and finally got somewhere. It now runs smoothly, it just feels horrifically slow, but probably because I've been driving a modern. As I drive around I'll give a tweak here and there until I'm happy, and I'll never use that CO tester again!

While I was at my dads on Sunday to cut down a carb adjuster tool I'd made, I got a little sidetracked by the red car. Ended up removing ancillaries from the 1256, unbolting it ready for lifting it out, and taking the head off. I wanted to get this done for two reasons, firstly to see what condition the bores were in so I knew if I was staying 1256 or going +0.030". Secondly to have a second head to swap over with the white one if that's what it came to. I knew the 1256 in the red one was a rebuilt Chevette engine the owner purchased not long before he laid it up. Turns out it's already been bored out +0.030" so I'm hoping it was a good rebuild and the bores are nice. On first inspection it looks ok. The head is very coked up and the water ways had a lot of debris in, but it didn't look too bad. Shame then that the water take off snapped and left it's thread in the head. I'll need to find a machine shop to get that out without damaging it, and then I'll have to find another take off.

I'm sure you can go +0.060 with the bores on these blocks. Only -0.030 on the crank though. The center bearing on the automatics have top and bottom thrust faces if you can find some. What engine bits are you after?

I may be able to but finding bits for +0.030 seems to be hard enough, let alone anything over.
I'm basically looking for anything and everything. I'd like the engine to be as new and fresh as possible. One of the crank bearings is already -0.030 so ideally I'd like a new crank for longetivity. I suppose for most of it I need to know what the crank and bore sizes will be. Otherwise I'd also like a new flywheel and sump...
Also need/would like a sandwich plate for an oil cooler take off and hoses.

Pistons were available up to and including +60, but the biggest you will find from anyone today is +40, bearings again anything up to +40 should be avaible.
you can buy the sandwich plates new, but why fit an oil cooler? unless your ragging its at sustained revs not worth the effort IMHO
shagging bad timing fella as i have all the parts you want but already sold the lot to another Viva owner for his spares shed... I had a clean out and sold the lot off...

Got a good 0.010 ground crank here. Been used but i checked it out with the micrometer and it'll be ok to use again. Should have a sump and flywheel somewhere too. Was going to build another spare motor on the cheap but the one i got seems to be doing well and if it does ever give up i'll sneak something else in. Chuck us a PM if you want it.

Where can you buy new sandwich plates Paul? I've been advised to fit one for the spec of engine. It's neither here nor there for me, just a bit more money and another couple hours to fit it all, at least I'll have an empty engine bay to fit it. It won't be ragged though.
Shame you sold your lot, could have done with that. Would you mind PMing me his name in case he wants to sell any of it?
Craig, may be interested in the crank, even if it needs to be ground again for whatever reason it's got enough meat left to be more use than the current one. Definitely interested in the sump and flywheel! Any dents or holes? And whats the condition of the teeth on the fly?
