I'm looking out for a BMW transmission as mine is about to die. It's for my 1994 BMW 525TD. I believe that 518i autos are the same too. But I might consider a ZF 5-speed auto or even a manual, if I can get all the flywheel, clutch and propshaft gubbins to do the conversion. The box fitted is the 4-speed auto GM 4L30-E or A4S 270R/310R in BMW-speak. A direct replacement would be easiest but as mentioned I may consider others. I'm in Nottingham so it'd help if you weren't in the Outer Hebrides. ;D What ya got?

Silly question Dean, but didn´t these engines find there way into the Carlton/Omegas?
Would the Vauxhall/Opel box fit yours too?

You're right, they did. The 2.5 diesels definitely had the 4L30E, and I think some petrol ones had them too. The box in my dad's 2.2 looks suspiciously like one! ;D I'm not sure if there are any subtle differences in them or not though. I don't really know that much about slushboxes to be honest. Isuzu used the gearbox too, and Honda but I'm unsure of what models. Or whether that was just US markets.

Thanks for the kind offer! After giving the whole thing some thought, I decided to drop the trans and see if I can repair it. The thrust washer is on its way from BMW Germany and the gearbox should be coming out this weekend. Hopefully it won't have chewed itself to pieces and I'll be able to do a relatively cheap repair. But if there's bits of ally everywhere when I open it up, a jaunt to Northern Ireland might be fun! ;D
