lol cheers guys, your comments and criticisms and praise are very welcome ;D croaky, that would be cool to meet up and stuff, I wont be around for a few days though then off to holiday woopwoop so ill let you know then you can let me know sort of thing when we can meet up! there's brewskis in it for you lol! colonelk - I was thinking this at work - it looks so sweet at that height, but the things that are stopping me running that height are the exhaust and the front dampers. The exhaust loses me 3 inches of bottom clearance and the front shockers bottom out about 20mm lower than now. I was having ideas about chopping some footwell out for the exhaust, running 2 small silencers back to back then out through the passenger rear quarter, that would be awesome! As now the beam is totally in the way so i'll have to severely dash the pipe up to make it fit .. And for the shockers - i'd be tempted to get some shorter ones but they're adjustable ledas and I love them, so i'd probably extend the turret up instead, then I can fab some strenghtening in aswell at the same time ;D.. Just acquired some metal in form of a bed that a neighbour was going to take to the tip lol, so might just go mental! Oh it was diyautotune.com where I bought mine from - though if you assemble the kit yourself you have to really sit down and decide what components you're gonna use and what configuration you want (eg cam sensor or crank sensor for revs, single coil, coilpack or coil-on-plug for ignition, what outputs you want etc etc) as then you make it once and you make it right, not like me - having re-opened the case about 24395 times since I bought it, might aswell just assembled it myself! but anyway, diyautotune are megasquirt gods (even though they are in the states), do NOT buy from Mtech in the uk whatever you do!. Haha and the screen - well it was the cheapest way to have 8 gauges naah it's seriously the best thing since sliced bread, titanium valve springs and ball bearing turbos (lol), music, satnav, movies, mapping, anything really in one place!. I have an update from today - did some more on the rear end again. After brainstorming the spring issue - decided i'll just go with the cossie springs on the back as I had them, and they were the sort of poundage that I wanted because imo they were ideal. so without further mincing - chopped the seats out of the manta axle: they were a little crusty at places but soon were welded up good then welded them onto the bm spring seats - this sort of thing: then welded in a support plate for the part where the manta seat overlaps the bm seat: tight but about 10mm of clearance either side: then shortened the cossie springs by 3/4 of a coil, loosely attached the arms and wheels on and lowered the jack: hmmm a bit lofty .. shaft angles at this height: so needs another 1/4 of a coil taken out, but the problem is that the spring will now be too short to sit in the seats when the car is raised, so i'll fab some 'mounts' to hold the spring for mot time. the diff end of the beam needs raising 10mm or so too to reduce the camber a little too, then were almost there

Enjoy your holiday, give me a shout when you get back and we can sort something out. Did you get any of the e30 prop? I assume you are going to need a custom prop with the e30 diff on the back. If you need anything I have an e30 prop in my garden which could be handy even just for the end to attach to the diff

as the springs are too short to stay in when the weight is lifted off, why don't you fit shorter dampers to keep em in?

cheers guys, alramone - that is the plan for the future. (or skinny coilovers). For now i've welded some tabs to keeps the springs in place, but after much planning I still had trouble getting them in, so will have to cut the tabs, springs in, then weld them up again . That way they're definately not going anywhere lol!! MOT booked for tomorrow morning. Am I crazy - yes! now looking at it I don't think it'll be finished, but worth a crack anyway! Since last update: > Shocker mounts were drilled out for the m12 bolts that the arms want (were 10mm's); > Arms attached; > Rear diff mount modified (old hole filled with weld, new hole drilled). This will give less negative camber at my ride height. > Springs now correct (ish) height, tabs welded to all spring seats to keep them in when fully extended..

I fail. I'm so totally beat I had to throw in the towel!. I think the last few days have totally ground me down, I think more than 12 hours a day working in my conditions lol, gets to you!! I was grinding a bolt down when the angle grinder sliped and the blade sliced a nice neat chunk out of my knuckle, that was what made me give up lol.. It's the 2nd one now, did one in the same place yesterday, ouch So mot's cancelled and i'm going on holiday, sod it for a week. Todays proceedings however : (i havent actually got many pics i've been working so hard!) pic of my spring retainer jobbies: works a treat, the whole arm, brakes, wheel and everything hangs off the spring and there isn't any movement (that I can see lol) so should be ok for mot. I was going to make a couple of removable 'straps', I drilled and tapped the chassis legs to take them, and as I was drilling one, the drill bit caught and the thing went flying! Couldn't find it in the end, so decided to weld them on. I was going to weld them in so I could twist the spring out of the retainer tabs when I have to remove it, but I ended up spending about 1 hr trying to install the spring, so just sliced the tab open in the end, stuck the spring in, hammered it shut and welded it up again! Glad I did now! Then the prop. Borrowed adaptorman's technique with angle iron (as the 2 props had the same outer diameter - a bit lucky lol!), then welded them together. I cut the edges in a V shape so plenty of weld penetration, I checked the inside and the weld went right through. Great! Then ran some additional beads side by side then filled it in the middle, then ground everything down, though left a 'hump' as this looks like it will add strength. For a bit of mincing: Prop Vader: "use the force ives, use the force to press the accelerator and break the prop" KSHHHHHH.. It will fail, it's just a matter of time .. A few hard launches will soon tell all. It's not dead straight either. Which sucks. But its quite long - so that's my excuse - I did everything I could officer, honest! There's a small deflection when it's rotated in neutral. Looks about 1mm, maybe more, found it hard to measure lol! When i'm back off holidays, we'll get both the back wheels up and run it in 5th, weld tabs if necessary, and balance it this way. Eventually it will balance out. Still thinking of some sort of way to measure the imbalance and monitor the progress with hard data. Maybe a water container on the diff with lines where the water ripples ride up the wall of the container and how far?! .. Then replaced the leaky rear gearbox seal: This is the old one, needed a bit of persuasion till it came out! here's a curse word pic of everything in place (you can see the spring holders): and ride height - shafts are dead straight, winnar! and a ride height pic - still a bit lofty, but it's what it's going to be unless I start preferring coolness over going fast, maybe.. Visually, camber seems spot on. Inner tyre wear will tell lol. managed all of today without any NOS, thinking of mounting this can on my dash where the fire extinguisher is just for giggles, then pour it over the fire if I get one .. .. I don't like kick anymore, it gives me headaches

Just loving this thread! really entertaining to read- good humour and not at all too serious- just what RR is all about i reckon! Are you hoping to have this at any shows this summer then? I cant stand the leaf springs on my Rx3- i'll do something like this if I take it back to NZ but the have full on silly engineering regulations and every thing has to be inspected and certed! f--king annoying. I think our chevette has a much wider rear track than the little rx3. But the viva could be perfect for this setup.

Howdy all readers! Back off holiday and seriously demotivated, but cracking on nonetheless as my uni house rent is up in a week, so this time it really has to be finished lol! Squeezemetim - my mate went to the states recently and brought back a couple of cans for curse word and giggles . I don't think i'll ever end up drinking it lol! yoeddynz - I was hoping to go to RR09, but not sure now as it's miles away from where i'll be living during the summer, and have no job . But we'll see - i'm a show virgin . That sucks about the regulations - though from watching high octane it seems there's a huge modified car scene - drifting and drag etc Finally got this out of the mould today: I have cuts everywhere, i'm itching like dash and I had to pretty much destroy the mould to get it out .. Which sucks since it has cost me a lot to make, but it looks to be worth it - the part came out really well. I used woven fabric for the outside, which is amazing - it's still in shape and in one piece after I used lots and lots of force, hammer&shisel etc to get it out! (or rather - peel the mould off the part by means of braking bits off lol). It still needs reinforcement specially around the lip and edges of the arches as they're thin, but its solid where it has to be (due to the bracing) ;D The bracing is just tubes of paper rolled up and sandwiched between layers of fibreglass. They're light, easy to work with and soak up the resin nicely . (just hope my engine won't get too hot ).. Exactly 10kg's at the mo - after more reinforcements it should be about 12 Also, these brakes are now on: but i'm having troubles with the brake hoses at the mo - so welding some new brackets from the tigra which will sit lower in the arch, and won't pull too much when going lock to lock. More pics soon

Right, since the last update i've been battling with getting the arches, front panel and bonnet off, and being saddened by newly found bits of crusty rust behind the front panel . So going to hit that tomorrow with some reinforcement, should be all good and solid. The triangle bits had thinned so much, i had to hack them off!. Anyway - weight results: Bonnet - 15kg's Wings - 5kg's each front panel - 3kg's total: 28 kg's. new front end - 12 kilos: so a 16 kg weight saving, and a splitter. Not amazing, but not bad either . No more rust either thanks curse word for that lol! Pre - trim: Everything lines up, a few dry spots here and there but all good in the hood

Just read this start to finish, excellent job mate, some brilliant out of the box lateral thinking! Was this car at PPC in the park? There was a white turbo kadett there giving it monster beans untill the turbo went pop, really silly fast! Hope to see this car at RR09, I'm going to be getting mine down there for its unveiling J

Last yer was amazing, the two days prior was more like a festival but with awsome cars everywhere! Then on the day it was just relaxed banter and cars in the sunshine, brilliant fun.
I wonder whos kadett it was at PPC then? It was really really rapid, like uncontrollable wheel spin through the first three gears out of the hairpin with smoke and black snakes on the road!

sounds well good, i'll have to put a proper effort in to get this presentable lol! I'd really love to know too, wheelspin through first 3 gears sounds promising , sounds like a proper build, there must be a project thread somewhere on the interweb for it . Reading your IMP thread has made me want one I can hear my higher brain saying: *FFS ives finish the rustbucket first, finish uni and get a job* I just love light RWD things! A small update from yesterday - been uncovering bodged previous repairs on the front, and more rust . Time's running out now, so cut off all the scabby bits, and remains of the triangle parts joining the bottom of the headlight panel to the chassis rails. like so: and going to weld a bit of box section to the bottom of the headlight panel and the chassis rail metal like so: (don't know why the box looks bent, its totally straight in reality.) and another 2 pieces like so (photoshop mockup): this box section will also support the cossie fmic (which was hanging off the front panel before). the triangulation should stiffen it. Though it was properly stiff before, i cant believe i didn't notice any slop So to keep with the theme of "whatever comes off, has to go back on better in some way", the front will be stronger than it was originally, i'll get a chance to rust-proof everything, and there will be more metal to crumple in a crash. (well, same I guess since I no longer have metal panels lol).. WHat do you all think?

Job's are great for money, rubbish for time. Uni is great for time and rubbish for money! My imp build stalled for 18 months while I got settled ooop north, finally on the go again! If the car is running, it will be presentble, peeps at the RR show are not all that bothered with the shiny bits when they know the work that has gone into the go go bit's underneath That box looks a bit beefy, whats the wall thickness? Would only need to be 16 gauge? Cheers J
