These are great little cars which are getting very rare now, even in Malta you rarely see one when there used to be lots on the road.
Look after it mate.

Most of all - photos.....some of the nicest photos I've seen for a while on this site. You've got a great eye for a compelling shot and really know how to capture the car/atmosphere. I like the de-saturated ones the most, the wide crops are beautiful and your shots make me want to grab my camera and head out on the road. Looking forward to seeing more of this little car.... haha YES! Exactly what I was thinking when going through this thread. I want to go for a shoot tomorrow with my car. One of my favorites of the batch. My pa has always wanted to get a x1/9 to drive around town. I should show him these pics. ;D

Great looking X1/9 I always had a bit of a soft spot for this. Good mods on the outside, and the photography skills are great! So you have undersaturated those pics to get those effects am I correct in saying?

Thank you all, great to have your support!! Great looking X1/9 I always had a bit of a soft spot for this. Good mods on the outside, and the photography skills are great! So you have undersaturated those pics to get those effects am I correct in saying? It's not just desaturation, also lightening up darker areas and colour filters, for example. I use Adobe Lightroom, it's great and very easy to use. And shoot in RAW file-format if your camera supports it, as the image then contains more information, which is useful for post-processing. I don't have a certain recipe though, different things work for different pictures.

Work on the X1/9 is continuing, setting up the suspension correctly, I corrected the caster which resulted in way too much toe-in. Here's another car. "Die Benze" is still owned by my grandfather. But he's 95 and doesn't drive anymore. So it's me who drives and takes care of it, which is quite easy thanks to good engineering and simple technology, rust is an issue, but controllable. And it's a real joy to drive it! It was bought new in 1971 by my grandfather. He went to get it at the factory near Stuttgart. Back then, the hazard lights were an optional extra and costed 8 DM or something. He went for the 220 Automatic, a quite ancient looking engine but with an overhead camshaft. The 2.2 litres produce the incredible amount of 105 horses, it's not really a racer, but it's enough for relaxed autobahn cruising. I'm not a big fan of auto-transmissions, but it suits the car. The four speeds are just a tad short, I find myself waiting for the shift in 5th gear on the autobahn. So it's a bit noisy over 120 kph, but it will run 160 kph an more. It's completely original inside and outside. I'm normaly not that kind of a person, but even the original paperwork is still there. An it still drives solid as a rock.

Went to get the BMW in the meantime, I'm still laughing when I think of it, here's the story:
The car was sold on ebay as "not running", later on the seller added that it would start but cut out shortly after. Judging from the rest of the description and the pics I got the feeling the seller was an honest but maybe not very bright guy...
Saturday we drove 150kms to Bad Hersfeld to get the car. We opened the bonnet, checked the wires and found that the wires at the positive pole of the battery weren't fastened at all, it was visible from metre away. We tightened them, jump started the car, drove it a mile to the next petrol station and it started as if nothing ever happened. Since then I've driven more than 400kms without a problem! So my gut was telling me the right thing and I just payed 350€ for a 1985 BMW 525E without major accidents (it seems the front wings were never even removed, everything is straight), an engine that runs great (I suppose even greater with a new set of spark plugs) for 200.000kms and a just slightly worn, but unmolested interior without speaker holes and such.
The to-do list:
-new front brakes with disks -rear emergency brake cable is broken -new headlamp right side -a few rust spots, not serious as it seems. -crappy paintjob rear left panel -change the batteries in the speedo

Some pics: The car as I bought it. Not really visible is the huge amount of dirt from some last minute offroad excursion. This was also present on the ebay pics and made the car look a lot worse than it is. It didn't cover any bad spots either. After a trip through the car-wash Cleaning the car is not my most favourite labour, but it makes a large difference. Here's some rust and the crappy/awesome paintjob. The rust is just on the surface, it's not as bad as it looks. The chrome around the windows is vanished sadly. People pay lots of money for this kind of finish I suppose. Rear lights are spotless! Rust from the bottom to the top, it's just on the surface though. Isn't blue velours the most awesome material ever?? Everything as it was in 1985 except the radio and the rev-counter. Cleaning and removing the silly painted-on sliver stripe from the front grilles. Brake dust from 1987 I suppose, the rims themselves are mostly unharmed though. I heard wonders about cleaning parts in dishwashers, I'm not convinced though, maybe ours isn't hot/whatever enough! <_<

525e?
2.7i stroker!!! 200bhp capability... go for it!
That block, 325i pistons/ throttle body/ injectors and a 320i 377 (IIRC) head? Achtung!

I heard that! Pardon?

Hmm, I don't know if britain is different, but here in norway we can get the 3.5 out of the 7 or 5 series pretty cheap So I wouldnt bother with stroking it, really! E28`s are nice cars, but I fear that isnt velour, if I know my interiors right... Velour is more fluffy looking, right? Now get some 8 or 9x16" Rial basketweaves, stretchy tires and some lowering, for teh win! My old one on 8x16" ET11 Rials... No chance of even driving without narrower tires and arch fettling ;D Was 205\55 tires, i think 195\45 would be good

the little fiat is off the road at the moment, not for mechanical reasons but "enviromental" reasons which don't allow it to be driven within frankfurt. there's a silver lining on the horizon though, it's going to be 30 years old next month and after passing a special examination it'll be allowed again. I got the e28 as a substitute, but I'll mainly leave it stock, so it's probably not that interesting to you...I'll leave it in this thread for the same reason. anyways, here are some pics of the e28, I'll take some better ones asap. loading for a holiday in italy passo rolle in the dolomits the europabrücke innsbruck

Pure class cars. The X1/9 looks surprisingly good in matt black, it's easy to turn a nice car into a shitter when it goes matt black. X1/9s are pure class in general too. Really nice photos as well, bossman.

Looks like you got a bargain with the BMW! Love the W115 too, but I am biased! ;D So the X1/9 is going to come back even better?

It seems to have been a bargain, I've driven it for about 2000kms till now and everything was fine. Mind you, I had to replace all the steering bushes as well as weld up the front end of the sills.
I've fixed the speedo, spilled battery acid in the cluster killed some connections. Idle is a bit shaky sometimes, just a little bit, maybe a sensor or the fuel filter!?
W115 is fine, the high beam wasn't working properly, some plastics got fried within the switch, I think I can fix that.
The X will return next spring I suppose, still haven't decided if I keep it matte grey or not...and if I'll keep it stock engine wise or install the double webers again, since I want to drive it around europe next summer...
