Not much of an update again, but stuck the BBS on as couldn't bare the cream any longer. Not sold on the stance though, might need to try either some spacers or see if the coilovers can go a bit lower

Had a couple of hours free today so got on with dropping the tank Found the first issue Also had a better look at an issue I recently discovered But no other major worries, not bad for a 27 year old car tbh. Just need to clean up where the battery had been relocated to, might try and give the boot a bit of a spray. First time in 3 years I have had a look at the turrets, very happy to not find rust. Can you tell I have a new phone lol

So.... Bodged the mk3 tank up (sat Infront of the car) getting good fuel pressure, constant 3 bar!
Tried starting it (even sketchier jumplead city)
It did almost fire, ran on 1/2 cylinders for about 5 seconds before a backfire and it died. Now don't seem to be getting a spark.
Crank position sensor wiring is knackered and maybe the sensor, possibly 4 dead coil packs as well.
So need to get some parts ordered.

Don't go throwing parts at it just yet! I make looms for these so can help diagnose the specific problem. A quick test to do is bridge the ecu relay pins 30 & 87. See if it fires up then. If not, are you running DBW or cable throttle & what's your engine code? I'll give you some pinouts to check.
Also, get your mulitmeter on the crank position sensor plug, ignore the black wire as that's shielding, but you should get a reading of around 900 ohms for a healthy sensor between the brown and white wires. (Colours may vary). What reading do you get?

Thanks pegwie. It's a AGU running Qpeng, the CPS plug pretty much fell off (the car loom side, so this is now in the kitchen - got a new one coming tomorrow) With it being a AGU it's a cable throttle. It has run in the past & nothing has changed since then other than 3 years have passed lol. In my defence, I bought the car with the conversion already done

Ah damn, qpeng is a problem! I could have been of help had it been the Vag ecu setup! Are you not tempted to run oem vw management? So from the broken off plug, if you set your multimeter to 2k ohms and see what reading it gives you between the yellow and white wire? Just to see if it was a previous issue, although having said that it would have not allowed the car to start had it been.
Coilpack wise the early AGU bolt down style are pretty reliable, infact probably the best of the bunch. Are all your earths good? If you turn your ignition on and see if you get a voltage reading between pins 1 & 4 on the coilpacks.
That's the problem with qpeng looms now, they are getting on a bit and there's not a huge amount of info on them kicking about anymore, the site doesn't exist any more either. Also from past experience I've not seen a good cold start mapped one yet, plus the fact they don't run knock sensors or a MAF?
But yeah check your ecu relay and bridge it if need be to rule that out. Does the fuel pump prime when you turn the ignition on?

I'm very tempted tbh as I have vagcom, so having a odb port would be great. Also the when it did start in the past, the cold start was terrible lol. Couple of things I would like to do in the future are, move the ECU into the car, tuck the wiring & possibly fit some Astra 16v digital dials I have laying around. Fuel pump is priming, I have swapped over to a mk3 tank & we stuck a fuel pressure gauge on it - cycled the ignition until it got to 3 bar and it stayed there. Fuel pressure regulator is working as it was returning fuel back to the tank.

There are loads of people doing 1.8T into CE2 looms nowadays, and for sensible money. Not having an OBD port on a modern engine is just nonsense - when I stuck an ABF in my mk2 I used the mk3's donor wiring and hid the OBD port behind the centre console.

Not sure how to add videos without using youtube but this is the sketchiness of what we had to do. Car hasn't got a battery, so jump pack and a jump lead running from my other golf connected in the boot. Issues, maf was unplugged, crank position sensor wiring was knackered, poor engine earth, pin 8 on ecu plug loose, and spark plugs are rubbish. Most of those are still issues but managed to work around most.

I’m watching. I took mine out for a little drive yesterday, only done 750 miles since may but every single one has put a smile on my face. Gotta love the boost and chatter in a car with very little sound deadening

Still haven't driven it, but the turbo chatter when coming off boost sounds great. I expect this to be running 170-180bhp when it's back up and running, should be fun as it's only got a ko3 so shouldn't have any lag.

Mines still on a ko3 too, but mines an ARZ with dbw. It certainly has very little lag!

First looms collected, had a bit of a hitch as the original loom I was going to pick up with the ecu, the guy didn't get the ecu to fusebox loom so I've had to buy another loom (this one) So hopefully in next few days I'm going to go collect the ecu and another engine loom.
