Possibly my favourite car ever in the whole wide world. Ever. Just so right in so many ways.
I had read that one of them (maybe even that specific car) was later used to test jet fighter equipment at an airfield and was bored out to over 7 litres. My memory is vague on this though.

Aha, I was worried my mind was playing tricks on me... AMG's so-called "Red pig" finished 2nd in the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971This heavy vehicle with 6.8 litre (6834 cc) and 420 hp (313 kW) was fast, but frequent refuelling was necessary, and tyre wear was also high. The car was sold to French company Matra, they used it for tests of jet fighter landing gear.
One of these racers with a 6.9 liter engine still exists in Finland and is in driving condition. The performance is impressive even by today's standards: 0-100 km/h 4.2 s, 0-200 km/h 12 s and quarter mile 14.42 s(?) despite total weight of 2400 kg . It seems that Matra no longer have the original car, and AMG went out there to France in order to find it but couldn't.

Here's my favorite view of that Hans Heyer AMG, no really, it's in the picture. 24 hours later it finished in the same position, behind Mr. Glemser in the #22 car. ;D But that's OK, Hans joined Ford-Koln in a couple years, and won the DTM in a Capri himself.

I dug up a photo of it in its Matra Aerospace guise - the chassis was streched to accommodate all the test gear. Apparntly the car was chosen because it could keep up with jet fighters on the runway to observe the landing gear / tyres...

Nice pic of the AMG's second place celebration with flowers and champagne. Meanwhile in victory circle, there was this: Yes, I'm a dick. ;D

its a Mercedes thread, it doesn't need another Capri I'm certain that's what AMG were thinking at the time as well. ;D Merely for completeness, the AMG finished 4 laps down on the Capper. (Hey, this is a thread about a race car. And Spa '71 was its most famous outing. This is contextual information! They earned their grade of "Trying" at the top of the term paper.)

Not taking anything away from the capri, but the Merc was a full size 4 door saloon that weighed over twice as much as the Ford so I think 4 laps down is still pretty impressive. have a vid of the road version on the strip to make up for it. ooh and this one

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I'm so glad you went there, Pop. Here's the data = the 300SEL Grp2 FIA had a displacement of 6834cc The Grp2 FIA Capri? 2873cc. So even if you theoretically DOUBLE the Capri's engine size to 5746cc (to match the alleged 2x weight), it is STILL a comfortable 1L+ less motor displacement than the Red Pig.

ahh that may be so, but we know that power does not automatically increase in line with displacement, also don't forget the increased frontal area and the fact that the mercs had a full interior still in them so the extra weight they carry isn't in the best places either, and i'm also pretty sure the AMG racers still ran auto boxes i know that the rally SL's kept the autos. Of course Capris are god like, but they aint nowhere near as impressive as a 2 ton plus V8 Merc charging down the straight at 140mph making a noise like a bull with its nads on fire.
