Hi all, newbie to the site I've done a couple of silly things in the last few months, it all started after the missus said to me "I think you need to buy another car" After not quite being able to believe my ears, I bought it best to keep her happy and I do as I was told ;D I quite fancied an E28 or an E24, as i've loved the old sharknose bm's for ever. Took me quite a while to find a half decent one for sale, but then eventually I found an E28 M535i on ebay. I put a silly low bid in to get the ball rolling. Whilst then getting all exciting and researching the car, I realised how cool it would be if I could find an e12 instead as I hadn't quite understood how rare and important these are to BMW's M history. Then the very next day an E12 M535i came up going silly cheap on ebay also. I didn't even go and look at it, I just thought it was worth the gamble whatever the condition it was in, so I put my bid on that too. it didn't go up too much, so I won that. Car number 1 - 1981 BMW E12 M535i in Sapphire Blue, 1 of only 18 RHD in this colour I believe. Thought it best not increase my bid on the E28 as although I really wanted it too, I was fast running out of room - and money for all the cars I have. Unfortunately no-one else bothered to outbid me, so I ended up winning that too Car number 2 - 1985 BMW E28 M535i in Diamond Black Both cars are dogleg 5 speed manual, and although the E12 is a total restoration project, the E28 is in great condition and drives fantastically. I haven't smiled and giggled so much driving a car in ages. Have a separate thread for the E28 ( retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=70367&page=1), but here are the pics of the 12 - well they will be when I can get them to work ! Andy

I LOVE e12 m535i's. If I had lots of money I'd have one in my garage for sure. What's it like underneath as they do like to rust?

Had a couple of e12 M535i's myself and still partial to an e21 or two.
Good luck with the restoration. Well worth the effort as prices are climbing although know thats not your motive.

I guess this pic has been posted a lot, but this is the nicest E12 i've seen, and is all the motivation I need to get the project finished. it almost temps me to change the colour of mine, although I can't decide whether that's wrong or not. As for underneath, Hmm, yeah its not the best Its definately going to take a lot of work. First job will be to strip it down and get the shell blasted to see exactly what i'm dealing with.

Your car, your restoration so seems right you should decide the colour. I reckon so long as you stick with an original colour it'll be fine. Mind you, that saphire blue can look lovely with some subtle M-sport stripes. Your Recaro's look quite tidy from what can be seen in the pics. Are you going to go with cloth or leather eventually?

Recaro's are good considering the car is on 143k, will need a litle tlc and re-stiching, but the bolsters are excellent. I'll be sticking with the cloth at the moment I think, although i'm sure i'll change my mind a few times during the restoration ;D Chris, yeah i've spent a good few hours looking over Tony's site, and been in contact with him to get the car on the register. He is pretty damn good at what he does it seems, the work he's done on the victor thread on this site is amazing. Haven't looked at the 5 forum yet though, so cheers for that, I'll be sure to give it a look Jacko

Gorgeous, I've one of these I'm restoring -slowly- in henna red. its nice to be reminded what one looks like in one piece. Must make a thread soon. Those dogleg gearboxes are worth a fortune btw. Interior looks very nice and M1 steering wheel looks good.

Yeah, I pretty sure its the standard steering wheel too. I hate the rear spoiler as well, so no need for apologies there Will 100% be putting a standard item back on. As for the rear valence, I don't know, I thought it was the standard item Must admit, i've not really had a lot of time to fully look over the car yet, its just got garaged until i've sorted a few other things out - and got some more cash, as I think i'll be needing that I'll go and have a read of your thread now, be nice to see another project thread, and sounds like it might make me feel a bit better too
