Lol slight change of plan
I started building today, and decided that chopper it is!
Finding suitable drift wheels will be a nightmare, so chopper it is, plus it means I can use the bike rear gear cassette to get a bit more speed going.

Ok..... picture time. Some of the time line is missing (the other half went out with the kids and took the camera). You will also have to excuse the mess my patio is in. Took a bit of a hammering over the winter, I think a spring clean is in order. So................. here is the donor bike obtained from freecycle. So I started by stripping it down I then looked at the axle that came off the mower. I took the wheels and the drive unit off. I offered it up to the bike frame to see if it was usable. Hmm... a bit narrow. Well I then offered the engine up to see how much chopping was required to get it in there So.............. not going to fit without lots of chopping..... Oh well! time to chop, so I sliced the frame in half and started to mock up some layouts. There is the engine, front wheel, handle bars and small rear wheels using a section of old roll cage to make up the rest of the frame.... I think it looks a bit out of proportion so i offered up the bike rear wheel..... Hmm.... looks a lot better. So chopper it is! So I started to graft the front end on. (action shot taken by the Mrs) And weld the head stock onto frame (excuse the welding, It was all spoldged together with an arc welder. I will try and Mig the important bit later) So I then offered the back end up again to figure out where to cut and weld. Trying it on for size (with hard biker face ) Stuck! I then lined the engine up to see how the drive train will work. Basically the engine runs the wrong way to direclty drive the rear wheel so I need to fit a shaft from one side of the bike to the other. Makes it look more chopper like having a primary and secondary drive. Hmm... Ok lets leave that for the time being. I also needed to lengthen the front forks so I did. I have a plan for tarting the forks up a but and make them look much better. Infact I might rework the forks at some point. They work for the moment so thats good enough. I have also decided to run the primary dive using belts. That way I can use a tentioner to create a clutch. Lucking I found that the alternator pully of an old skud engine fitted to the output of the engine perfectly! result And the pully off a water pump will work perfectly at the other end I also thought about using an old gas bottle for a fuel tank And here is an overview of where I am at today.... More tomorrow with any luck Need to finish the frame and look at the primary drive and clutch system! Lewis

Ok a little update for today. I wanted to finish the frame up and start looking at engine mounts. I cut and fitted another tube to complete the rest of the frame up. I need to go round and mig up the frame at some point, but it is strong enough for the time being. I then had to deal with the engine. Due to lying it on it's side in the frame, the carb is the wrong way round. So off came the inlet and exhaust. I did manage to snap both exhaust bolts so will have to get them out or redrill the holes. Then plonked the engine into the frame. So that is all I got done today. More soooooon! Lewis

Looking good! If the engine spins the wrong way to drive the wheels, why not flip the engine through 180 deg to put the driveshaft on the other side of the bike?

I'm guessing it spins the wrong way to have the drive on the right side, so he's flipped it and is using the other axle to transfer drive to the right side. I was a bit confused at first too, thinking he was somehow going to use the axle to reverse the rotation.

or buy my yamaha stepthru engine. reorienting the carb will be the least of your worries, (by the way radiator hoses make perfectly good adjustable intake manifolds ) The lubrication would be what would concern me. Engines don't tend to have the sump on the side!

Great progress there mate.
Hope it all comes together. (Oh, and fits into something, or onto the roofrack)

This looks really good mate. I was wondering about running it on the side like Datman mentioned. Could you turn the drive through 90degrees with a twistted belt or similar?
I like the way your heading though (forks aside) I think i've got a pic of me riding it across the car park at deans a few years ago in the 'surfing' style like you mentioned. I'll try and dig it out.
I have the air filter and lid in the garden still if you need it btw. Also have stud extractors if it'll help with the exhaust, but looks like you'll get grips on whats left easy enough.

The rotation thing.... i could flip it over, but I was concerned because the intake would have been on the bottom of the engine, and the carb would have ended up near the ground.
I could put the wheel on the other way round, but then the freewheel would mean the sproket wouldn't drive the wheel, and if I welded the freewheel, then the gear derailer would be pulled all over the shop, on over run.
Plus this way it allows me to run a belt drive to create a clutch system.
As for a sump.... all of the mowers I have pulled apart so far don't have a sump, becuase they don't have an oil pump. Basically it relies on the oil being thown around the engine by the crank and gears moving. In this case I will lie it on its side, make sure it is well topped up on the dip stick and be done with it.
At least that is how I remember the insides of these types of engine.
Datman - I have some rad hose with a bend in it that I am going to use. Just slice the intake manfold and jubilee clip the hose in place.
As I say the last engine I took apart didn't have a sump or pump. Just relied on splashing about. Lots of oil I think is the order of the day!

they often have a 'flinger' on the bottom of the conrod. Yes I had thought about the twisted belt idea , as i've seen that on a ride-on mower. might be worth thinking about. If you mounted the engine on a hinge you could connect a clutch cable to move the engine to tighten the belt.

lets just say its currently 'back of fag packet' design stage, with many features that need to be removed so I have a hope in hell of building it!

Mark Sounds interesting, soft tail with double thingy front suspension? Got home from work early today, so spent another 20 minutes on the bike mounting up the engine. I had some old kids stabalisers on another freescyle bike one got chopped up to make the bottom engine mounts. then splodged some weld on them Here are some more overview pics Front forks need some work, they don't really look right. I might try and create a set of tripple trees like propper bikes have to make it look better at the front. Lewis

Haha that is cool! Well today I spend some time on the carb (was very very clogged up with dirt and oil etc) and started the drive system. Here is a pic of the carb after it has been srcubbed with red hot water and loads of fairy. its a Dellorto carb! So i gave it a little clean up in the sand blaster. I cut the intake manifold in half and then used some flexi rubber hose to remake an adjustable afair Then bolted to the engine Schweet! I threw a little fuel in it and it sparked right up and seamed to run ok! I need to be careful though as the govenor is not connected. Now... I have started part of the belt drive, however I think I am going to start again as I am not totally pleased with how it is looking. The principal is sound, I just need to improve the execution. So you can see the shaft casing is welded to the seat stem bit, then a brace added between it and the engine. I am concerned that No1. its not straight (my eyeballs failed me today) and No2 the axle runs on metal bushes instead of bearings, and I suspect that the bushes will overheat and wear away very quickly. I think I will souce some suitably sized ball bearings and remake the whole lot. Lewis

No further update as of yet, however a friend of mine works as a gardener at a local school and they have a 10 hp sit on mower with a knackered engine. He doesn't know what is knackered about it but I can have the engine and gearbox assembly apparrently.
Going to pic it up on saturday.
Going to look at fixing the engine and making something big and fast (as well as doing the chopper)
