ages ago I seen a ride on mower in the skip. I tried to get it out. with bits of wood and rocks under it. But it was just too heavy to get out by myself. It had a space for a car battery. think it was electric start. the engine was upright mounted an a flat box section chassis think it was 400cc.

Well picked the engine and stuff up last night.
It is a 10 hp briggs and stratton engine with electric start and all that!
Not sure what is wrong (if anything) with it yet, but it looks ok!
Got a few plans in mind that me and Myke are cooking up. Mark, you in for helping us making something mega with it??
Expect another thread soon!

I seem to have mixed success with those type of engines .Over the years Ive got them from tips, bootsales etc. Either they are fine or are one big problem from the outset. Thats why I only use new engines nowadays.Hope yours is ok.Theres nothing worse than spending time building summat ,and then have to spend half the time you use it trying to start it or get it to run right.

Well I started the bike engine today. I rigged up a temp fuel line and tank, and it seams to run ok.
I think the main jet is blocked becuase it runs well on choke, but if you let the choke out, the engine stalls. Also as the engine vibrates it is causing the spring loaded drain thinggy on the bottom of float chamber to hit the engine casing resulting in it leaking fuel. But it ran and ran ok.!
So a clean of the jet and a carb mount to stop it wobbling about.
I also tried the big engine. I was told that the engine was broken or something like that. The mower it came off had been sat in a garage for about 3 years.
So i hooked up a 12 volt battery, and tried the key start... nothing. So i shorted the started relay and the engine sprung to life of the old fuel left in the float chamber and ran sweet!
Perhaps the wiring was the 'broken' bit, but the engine is sweet!

I suspect it could do with a (fairly restrictive) air filter and maybe a bit of inlet ducting, to get the level of vacuum and air speed in the carb right - I've an old Honda Generator engine that won't run due to the air cleaner being missing.

Ah, interesting. You might well be right, although it didn't run quite right when it was still in mower guise!
If it is getting too much air for the carb jet, can I just enlarge the jet to get more fuel and power? or does it not work quite like that?

I think the problem with these small engines is that at low revs they don't really flow enough to pull the petrol up from the float chamber, but I don't really know. It might well be worth trying a trumpet on the intake to the carb (top of a plastic bottle maybe?) - it made huge difference when Scary was setting up the carbs on Mayday. Just make sure that all the air passages are open into the trumpet.

Mark - Its not a V twin mate! Its a single cylinder thumper! Must be 400 - 500 cc single cylinder with syconised counterweight (well that what it says on top of it!)

P.s. looking forward to seeing your creation come to life!

Coolio
Change the gearing and then add a little boggy cart behind like they do in mower racing!
Got a clutch on there too by the looks of it.

Heh, Was thinking about just leaving it, but will 'attempt' 'something'. don't hold your breath LOL. When I try and get creative it normally fails! Good news on the engine steve was hoping itd be ok

Well a little update on the drive line. I re-adjusted the layshaft and got it lined up and welded in place and fitted a 700 mm fan belt. A perfect fit with the right amount of slack to act as a clutch. I also did some fag packet gearing calcs and realised that the drive sproket on the lay shaft would have to be so small as to not really be practical in order to work with the old rear gear cassette..... damn! So i took the crank gear off and it looks like a better candidate, although I will no longer have gears. I plan to gear it tall and just roll the bike along by foot before dropping the clutch. Now i just need to figure out a way of attaching it onto the hub (probably lots of weld) Here is the carb float chamber drain rubbing on the engine. So I need to make a mount for the top back to the frame. Thats it for now. More soon. Lewis

Thanks.
I wanted to make sure the engine was going to be ok (ish) before I forged on with the rest of the build.
I need to buy a chain, and once that is on I can see if it actually moves. If it does, then I will finish off the controls etc.

Time for another little update. I got the chain and drive line finished today, and had my first powered ride and...... it works!!!! Well sort of! I made the exhaust manifold and system I welded the front sproket on but realised that the chain was catching on the frame So I had to cut and reweld the frame And finished by putting a slash cut on the end of the zorst Thanks to Myke for the help today. So we could get it to start and run, but fairly roughly. Once under load it would pull well but then just keep conking out! We pulled the carb off and checked the main jet which didn't seam blocked. Any ideas of where to look next? Lewis

I think it's worth trying what jrevillug suggests in putting more restriction in the inlet tract. It goes against normal thinking but must be worth a try before swapping carbs or anything drastic.
If you can fix the base of the filter housing to the choke flange more securely i'll dig out the foam filter and the air box lid. Must be worth a test!
I can see merit in this as it worked ok as a mower not too long ago.
