Hi All, Been lurking around for a while looking at the goings on, thought I would post something about the wip I've just collected. The story goes, I saw this in a driveway while on my way to Luton airport. On my way back, once I'd dropped my wife off, I, for some reason, stopped to ask the owner some questions. He was an interesting guy with a collection of Hudsons and other weird and wonderful cars. He told me it was a runner, and that it would easily pass an MOT. It was rusty, musty and had moss growing out of it. Hadn't moved in 2 years. He offered it to me for £3K. I made my excuses, left my phone number for some reason, and left. The guy called me on Wednesday this week out of the blue, asked me if I remembered it, said come and collect it and you can have it for my favorite price. Free! When I arrived to collect it, he shocked me by jump starting it and driving it onto the trailer. First time he's started it for the beginning of 2008. Needless to say it's now in my drive, and post power wash, looking a bit better. I need to have a good look around it, but overall it's not that bad. Obviously needs a bit of attention to the arches, windscreen surround, front edge of the floor, brakes, a service and a serious amount of cleaning. I want to drop it on the floor, add some rimmage, and leave the body pretty much as it is, but maybe add some pin striping. What do you think? Better ideas? It's bloody ugly, but I kind of like it! Looking around it looks like there may only be a few of these left in the UK now.

No idea, but he just wanted rid. Perhaps I'll find out over the next few days.
I've been known to talk the brown stuff. What can I say?
It was about 9 months between knocking and today.

that is amazing
i would love one of those, first saw about them when i was looking into older and unusual VW's - never thought i'd see one, i remember one came up in yellow, but never seen anything else about it..
in the end i settled on wanting a santana as it was the next rarer booted and watercooled vw in the UK
your a lucky man getting that, its looks great, mot'd slammed on some nice rims would look great
bookmarked to see who it progresses

I really like these! I've never seen one in the metal. What a great story on how you came to own it! I suppose the guy wanted it to go to a good home and remembered your visit. Looking forward to seeing progress on this one.

I'm old enough to remember VW launching these in the UK, they were designed by NSU who were taken over by Volkswagen in 1969 quite literally just as the car was about to be launched/badged as one. VW delayed the launch for 12 months before unveiling it to a largely disinterested public in 1970.
Unfortunately they were slower and (more crucially, given the early 70's fuel crisis) less fuel-efficient than the 411/412 they were supposed to be replacing. hence VW never really got behind it, only selling 200,000 before it was canned in 1974 to make way for the Golf/Passat.
All of which makes it infinitely more interesting in my eyes!! What a corker. ;D

I've read your initial post thirty-seven thirty-eight times now and it still seems to say that the car was free. Clearly there's something wrong with me. I'm closing this thread and coming back to it later.

I had one of these, Same green too!! Mine was too far gone though, sold it on E-bay... Was a K70 LS with twin headlamps... Have you seen the one T2D are doing? Converted to a wagon, on a Type 3 floorpan!! If I remember right they are 5x112 though, same as an NSU Ro 80, not porsche..

a nice find and a stunning price ;D ;D ;D if my memory serves me correctly they did suffer with a lot of cylinder head & gasket problems , might be worth looking into before you get too many miles on it . depending on your long term plans , it might just be worth keeping it totally stock and letting a VW nut own it . just a thought
