It's still going! Just drive it in the holidays when I'm back from Uni though these days. Will post a little update at some point, but there is nothing particularly to update with if I'm honest, not had any major issues with it for a while, just light bulbs going and boring stuff like that ha
A few weeks ago I made the trip from Leicester to Birmingham. I first noticed a slight knocking noise at certain rev ranges and a slight drop in power about an 45 minutes into the trip. The knocking was quiet enough for me to continue thinking it might just be some random noise (the car makes all sorts of random noises and rattles anyway). However the noise got louder and the power dropped more and more. At this point my heart sank, I was thinking the bearings had gone again (only had them replaced last year) as it was from memory an identical loud knocking noise. Anyway, I was on the motorway and the hard shoulder was being used by traffic so I nursed it to the next junction. As I began to come to a slow down approaching the roundabout white smoke began pillowing out of the back like a steam engine. When I went to pull out the car had a desperate lack of power felt like it wasn't even going to make it. Anyway I made it to the first exit and parked it in a side road. Turned the engine off and it didn't turn off, I got out and flipped the bonnet up, smoke was coming out, and the engine was shaking violently as it over-ran for what must have been a couple of minutes. Anyway I had to be somewhere so I left the car, got the bus and returned to pick it up the following day. The following day, I opened the radiator cap and the radiator was bone dry. So I filled it up, and started it up. Sounded fine at idle, no knocks, nothing. Let it warm up then revved it a bit, sound fine still, no leaks evident, no smoke. So I drove it round the block and back, and it all seemed to be working fine, however when I flipped the bonnet there was water spraying out of the water pump. So on the face of it, water pump leaked, drained all the coolant and the car overheated. Anyway I wasn't going to drive it home so I got a tow. However today I finally got around to looking at the car and the radiator water is full of oil it seems, but the engine still sounds fine and no smoke. Am I right in saying that it would seem that the fuel pump leaked, drained the coolant, causing the car to overheat, which has crushed/damaged the head gasket, causing oil to leaking into the new coolant I've since put in?
By the sounds of it the water pump has started leaking - all coolant has gone - engine has got very hot and on the verge of seizing up - the heat has damaged head/headgasket causing oil and water to mix.
If it was knocking badly bottom end bearing damage has probably occured..possibly full rebuild mate or at least check over
Vitesseefi, it's a 1500 engine, so it does have a temp sensor, but I have no gauge attached... if I fix it will be adding one though.
Anyway, I can't afford to fix it, MOT it, reinsure it and put petrol in it, so it's going to be mothballed. Am I best to pay the £300-£400 to have the head gasket done so I can turn it over every few weeks to stop it seizing, or not bother? I'm worried if there is water in the engine it could encourage internal corrosion??
where abouts are you/the car living now mate? I'd be happy to come by and have a looksee. the head gasket on these things are easiest thing to change as long as the manifold bolts aren't corroded fast. I'd be happy to help but it may be a few weeks till I am free. we could check if the head is warped as well.
Who are you insured with? I've just done a Herald 1500 conversion and am struggling to find anyone that will even consider me.
I was insured with Footman James, then most recently with Adrian Flux after Footman James decided I was too young, having been with them for a number of years with no claims. Car is currently SORN'd though so I don't have any up to date advice.
