LS400's seem ideal, the whole idea of them sounds ace. Big RWD saloon with a 4.0 V8 for £1000 sounds ideal, there is plenty to choose from on ebay and autotrader, the 5x114.3 pcd means plenty of cool wheels around and best of all BC do a coilover kit for the LS400 for under £600. I'm thinking with £2000 you could get one, slam it hard and then spend £400 on some second hand J-rims. Just a pipe dream. But....... Whats prone to going wrong? And out of interest, how easily can you convert on to manual?Supra prop and box? what flywheel? Yum Yum!

TBH not much goes wrong, the electrics can get dodgy, but not too often. The Idle valve sometimes sticks and needs rebuilding with new bearings, but its cheap and easy, alternator can go if power steering leaks, and AC compressor can fail. All pretty simple fixes ! As for manual conversion, you can use the gearbox from a supra mk3 turbo ( R154) or the non turbo from the mk4 (w58) the adapter plates are available online, and you need a concentric release bearing from howe racing. I'm not sure which pedals would work though. Flywheel use a 3sgte with slotted holes to fit the 1uzfe PCD and a heavy duty hilux clutch.

There is also that box of magic from the states that I believe you posted about Robin that allowed for a sequential paddle affair on the box...
I have the link on my home PC and but as I rebuilt Windows this morning, I managed to not set my RDP up properly so cannot get the link whilst at work.
I will post it up in the morning!
Rysz.

i need to work out how mine has been slammed but haven't had chance to rip it apart yet. they do seem to go amazingly low at expense of some steering lock.

i ran an LS400 for years, nothing went wrong with it at all, even after 220k miles, passed every mot no bother, not even an advisory. Only thing the was wrong with mine was the A/C button needed a new LED in it! Common faults are supposedly front wishbones and dashboard cluster not illuminating, but i never had the issue. have some of my old cruiser after i fettled it: the bloke that looks after the queens horses is rolling in it now!! quite simply... GET ONE

Wow, too good to be true?? Buy a Lexus LS400, spend $350 and it's practically converted to manual? That sounds amazing...

it will cost more than 350 to convert, the adapter plate will run you somewhere in the region of 300 to get machined. but if you look carefully, you can get things cheap

Seeing those makes me remember the one I see on the drive home from work. That is slammed too although the wheels have too much chrome for me, but it still looks good. I imagine though the fuel bill is painfull. It cost me 82 quid to fill up my E28 today. I get nearly 30mpg out of that. I bet Ls400 owners dream of that. Or maybe they get it?

the "full manual shift" auto will only be as quick as the box itself can shift. Remember this is a luxury car. Shifts are more about smoothness than performance. I think a paddle shift on one would suck.
Why buy a car like an LS400 and convert it to manual? The Soarer V8 are all auto as well IIRC.
Buy one, leave the autobox in place as God intended.
IME (and I've looked at loads of these now)
wishbone bushes go, and the wishbones are expensive. Bushes not available separately. brake discs warp (or concrete to be more exact) and cause brake shudder. dash illumination fails in part or in whole (usually worse on Mk1 and Mk2 models) the controls on the AC etc black out due to the LCD bleeding (Mk1 and MK2 only) heated seats never work CD players pack up exhaust leak where manifold meets the system.
thats about it.
Mk1 and Mk2 are heavier than Mk3 and Mk4.
Mk1 & Mk2 = 240 BHP 4 speed auto 16.2 sec 1/4 mile Mk3 = 260 BHP 4 speed auto 15.2 sec 1/4 mile Mk4 = 280 or 290 BHP 5 speed auto 14.9 sec 1/4 mile
