It's all to do with the stigma of being a traveller and the fact that most people in the UK need to be surrounded by their Ninsonybox X360Wiis and have space to park their Nissan Thunderpatrolmeister next to their Vauxhall Disappointment in pseudo-pleasant surburban idylls.
That and most people in the UK are laaaaaaaaaaaaazy.

That and most people in the UK are laaaaaaaaaaaaazy. Could not have said it better. Don't forget that society is very good at making everyone in to prime consumers. Someone i know once told me that he did not aspire to living in a caravan, he is now paying over the odds for a small terrace house. Another traveller friend also told me that "any idiot can spend money" he lives on site and has just bought a hectare of land in Portugal for summertime... now who is the sucker...

I must say I am really glad that this thread is being read by lots of people and that it is sparking some ideas into some of your heads ;D I think the UK is a prime place to live like this- there are so many great little farms about that if approached properly I'm sure some of them will be fine about earning a little extra rent on the side- I think that you can also point out that having someone living on your land is extra security. Anyway- it is a great way to save money- plus its just so fun building these things (when your finished and sit back to enjoy a cuppa) Hannah and I want to come back to the UK once she has got her NZ residency and we will probably build another truck there- so we can have one in each country But must finish this one first.... Here's the new floor we finished tonight...

Are you gonna collect that water and use it? Maybe some stainless tanks under the truck??
How about volts? Theres a good site - otherpower I think, that makes small wind generators out of scrap car parts...

The patterns in that wood are lovely, helps it not look like a sauna since it isn't yellow or orange.

we were going to pipe the water in but as we will have a huge tank and always be near water instead we can just put big buckets under the truck- the pipe work into truck was going to be a tricky route with lots of bends and I wouldn't want it to block.
I would love to make my own wind genrator. As we will be mainly all 12volt then maybe have a play around with a small car alternator sometime.
I cant wait till truck is livable so I can sit on my couch designing with coffee in my blood then work over to my workbench and build!

Era will get you drunk and when you are most vulnerable he'll talk you into fitting a 12A into the 100e... Don't even go there. Nicola is game for anything big, from V8 to Turbo etc.

How do the transport ministry view modifications like this? do you have to take the truck for some sort of road worthiness/security test with this attached once it's all done?

because it is built onto the deck which is bolted to the truck chassis it is effectively a load - which means as long as it falls within the size restrictions and that all windows are either toughened glass or shuttered over whilst driving it will be fine.

some updates. We have almost finished putting up all the batons and flashing around the windows. I have yet to make proper removable 'rain deflectors' over the windows. But for now it look great we think. Very happy with the look. The last of the ply is up in place on the roof facing parts of the upstairs rooms. We've put in a door for access out onto the roof from the bedroom. So just some cappings to finish it all off up there. We mounted the Cedar/Rimu door into the frame I built from Rimu and Miro. It looks great and fits well with the other wood and marine ply.. And we put in the little window we had restored. It was going to be fixed but we couldn't help but to make it an opening window. Its lovely and will be nice on a hot day... Next on list after the batons are all done will be starting to line the inside out with the 500 metres of Rimu cladding we scored a great deal on. I took some photos tonight at sunset - because the sky was pretty... but i missed the bloody sunset  Anyway..

cheers- we found that one on the nerd net a while back some how. I reckon thats the only wooden house truck built in the us pacific north west style that I have seen in the uk. I think its just gorgeous! And the green goddess's were sold off bloody cheap iirc ? The fella being interviewed - roger beck, I have a signed copy of his book 'some turtles have nice shells' its filled to the brim with amazing house trucks from the 70's and 80's. Its now a very dog-eared book ! I just hope to see more getting built in the uk from now on.. Hint hint .
