hi people. I've recently acquiered a mk4 fiesta (T reg style) for peanuts. As its standing me nowt, and pretty much worthless tat in itself... i wanna have a giggle with it. I know there is a whole issue with cutting the roofs off cars, as it may kill wildlife and make vosa folk cross and stamp their feet, but i want to make a fester pickup. Its only going to be parked up most of the time used as a promotional vehicle, may do the odd journey on the roads, but nothing exciting. After the mot is up in december (if it lives that long) - it'll be going to the crusher, or sold on here for parts. Does anyone have any pointers on what to do? Anybody done it before and got any handy hints? I'm not the worlds best welder, and i guess practice makes perfect, so thought this may help in that respect too Flames, rants, helpful comments and potential failings greatly appreciated. Sorry the car in question isnt exactly retro, but I am calling for expertise from those far more knowledgable than myself... and i know i'm in the correct place for my sins, have some viewing pleasure

Won't there be a BIVA problem for chopping into a monocoque chassis shell?

Won't there be a BIVA problem for chopping into a monocoque chassis shell? It sounds like he doesn't care, and it will be scrapped when the next MOT is due, so it won't be an issue unless he has an accident on the road, or is spotted by a very eagle eyed policeman.

thanks for looking out for me peoples, however, as sir VIP says, it's not really going to be a road going item as such, far from a daily driver anyways. I love that orange mk3 tina and white ovlov ute, they turn me on for some odd reason lmao. I been thinkin, could i re-use the boot lid as the rear screen item? off tonight to measure up

use the top of the tailgate as your rear window, my mk4 Cortina pickup used the rear roof section just moved forwards, the sloping rear window will give a more finished look and make more space in the cab.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

what do you mean by 'rear roof section moved forwards'? I was thinking just cut the roof panel along the water gutters and fold it down to make the rear of the cab, but the bootlid would look so much better if i could wangle it

i'd cut the rear pillars off the body (leaving plenty of roof skin on top, i'd cut the skin along a line across the roof level with the B pillar) and move them forwards so the top butts up against the top corner of the door frame, then plate over the gap thats left, that'll allow you to have the tailgate still on the car to act as the rear (heated) window, it will also keep the vents on the car for ventialtion so it shouldn't steam up inside any worse than normal.
Fitting a pop up glass sun roof helps make joining the roof skin back together nice and easy as you only need to weld two small bits either side of it and join the rear part onto the gutters, the whole thing will look more professional than just hacking the back off at a right angle for not that much more work.

Worst chop ever but you get the idea, to be honest though i think they are to short to make a decent looking pickup, however you do the back, just cut the roof right off and weld the doors closed, thats what we used to do for summer cars when i was a youth.

cheers for putting it into idiots terms popup, i now understand completely, and had not thought about doing it that way! Tbh, now i've seen your potatochop, i don't know if i like the idea... it looked much better in my head lmao... i agree - it looks kinda small and pointless. The bantam ones are cool, but tghey werent made in a dodgy lock up on a sunday afternoon lol. Hmm... so you suggest a roofless one, i like the sound of that, but our weather is shat ooop north, no matter what time of year lol decisions decisions and all i know about that granny pickup, is that it was featured on top gears shed of the week years ago
