update from friday:-

o/s front chassis rail was a little poorly






filling in the hole








i also tried to weld up a couple of slits in the chassis rail flange caused a long time ago repairing the bottom of the rail.

this ended up too horrible to photograph

time money count..... too painful..... must ..take..drugs....again ;D

wednesday i had to wait for Paul to come and check out the mess i had made in the unit.

before he got there i quickly repaired the rotten bit of wing rail - without taking pictures as i had forgotten to take my workshop camera

i also didn't have one of the thousand sharpies that pass through my workshop. this lead me to try another technique.

it was so successful i went back and did a quick run through so the pics are a bit staged

because of the shape of the section and the lack of a sharpie i decided to try a technique shamelessly stolen from an episode of american chopper

jnr was making a template to fill a hole using duct tape, i used masking tape as i had some to hand.



trimmed the edges flush with a stanley blade



cut out the wing fixing hole and trimmed to the size i was going to chop out.
the blade cuts also marked the rail so i knew where to cut out the rot



peeled off and stuck to a bit of zintec



i then cut out the repair piece with snips, drilled out the ends of the mounting hole and shaped with a file.

I chopped out the rusty section then welded in the new piece and ground it all back.

sorry no pics for this bit but the finished repair is better than i normally achieve ;D

I have tried to interest her in pictures (nudge nudge wink wink) but she seems more interested in popping out to the pub with the other yummy mummies

in an effort to avoid celebrating the jubilee until nearer the actual time, i hid at the unit today

for reasons that will become apparent i decided to roll the beam outside




a £7 strip+clean disc lasted all of 5 minutes cleaning off some of the worst suface rust






fairly unhappy about the state of the rest of it but not unhappy enough to wire wheel it all to bare metal, i sploshed a whole bottle of loctite 7305 over the shoddy bits.

seems much better than the sloppy toolstation stuff i used last time - it seemed to dry quickly and set the rust, rather than just rusting any clean metal







i also cleaned back the weld through areas and the bits that had been left from the chassis painting inc. the bottoms of the chassis rails where the xmember was bolted.

i then sanded back the engine bay and front valence using a combination of random orbital sander and elbow grease

not wanting to be left behind by everyone else on RR who seem to be painting their cars, i brush painted the seams , bottom of the chassis rails and any other inaccessible areas.

the next 45 minutes were spent wandering about muttering under my breath about the foolishness of building a 'spraybooth' not fitting lights and then filling said 'spraybooth' with tat

once my unit neighbors had all gone, to wherever normal people go on a saturday afternoon, taking stock of the white van and white caravan that had been left opposite the unit in my parking spaces , i fired up the spray gun with some black epoxy ;D

can of energy drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other i surveyed the most impressive spray job i have done so far (also the first ).

loads of runs from the brushed bits, a little bit patchy from one coat and half a dozen blobs thrown out by the gun for some reason, but a real mojo boost

my o/h even said "that looks nice" to the pics which is better than the usual "that's nice dear"

although she was wearing quite thick beer goggles



still marveling how i had taken a picture with no free hands i answered the phone to the aforementioned o/h requesting airlift from the pub (1.30-8.30=/=quick afternoon drink ) so back to bed for the beam




in other local news the 5(?) baby robins(?) seem to be doing well



probably all for this weekend but i will try to sneak away if the 'royal we' allows it

paint- only some epoxy mastic to cover the repairs, although i hope i have enough cash left after payday to buy some white rustoleum to do the engine bay and interior - eventually

think its interior repairs next then interior paint in 2013, build up running gear in 2014, panel+door repairs 2015, fit wheels and then rework arches 2016, fit interior+wiring/pipes 2017 , 2018 for exhaust, mot 2019, maddog2020,2021 exterior paint and 2022 glass/perspex

bring on RR gathering2023 ;D

Crikey, all I did yesterday was re-weld an exhaust manifold so it wasn't scraping along the suspension of the ginger ones truck. You managed this in about the same amount of time, nice!

Great to see more progress on this old girl. I notice you no longer post costs/timescale!
I keep thinking with this project that you could do with a mini RR 'diy sos' crew to descend on your workshop and give you a solid weeks help with getting the body finished, painted and the mechanicals back in. Having said that, your recent progress seems pretty rapid! Will keep watching with interest
