Always liked the color and matt finish of red lead and have a collection of rusty vehicles that would benefit from the treatment so, I'd like to know of others experience with this kind of paint. Important bits for me are that it is of a good quality, in as much that it protects from rust and is suitable for a top coat i.e non porous (polish? lacquer?). Quality overrides the cost here as I only really want to do this once. Quite like the slight sheen on this, nicked from stealthstylz thread (cheers mate) I'll add more pics later when I have more time

Looking for brand names of good repute ideally, or is they pretty much all the same?

You could try googling:
"Teamac Duracote Red Oxide Paint 03554" Or modifications thereof.
We used to use it on canal boats - super tough + hard wearing.
This is a paint, not a primer. Primers are porous and will allow rusting pretty quickly.

Saw the bottom of the Woolwich ferry was painted in the dull red stuff the other day, had forgotten that till now, I'll go check it out.

rust encapsulator sounds good if nothing else, cheers steveo. By way of thanks I thought I'd google up some more images but was stopped in my tracks by finding a pic of my very own Transit from a thread on the transit forum. Big world, small web, or something like that anyway. Of course I now am inclined to post said Tranny of which if it offends I am sorry but it just had to be... Beauty hey Can't remember what paint I used on that and the rest of the tin was mixed with some household undercoat, thinners and some Hammerite for the top coat so is no longer around. Good stuff though, I ran out of the hard to match topcoat and the rust has not eaten through the red lead on the roof yet, some 18 months later ;D This will probably/maybe/eventually get the full treatment with maybe some salt flat inspired race numbers on it's now windowed and Milka bar purple flanks. However my main thoughts are for my e21 which will be receiving some fresh metal sometime soon. Got a red lead scheme in mind for that too involving the red stuff too.

I use red oxide that I buy from a local steel building company, barns etc. They paint their RSJs in this stuff with no top coat and it lasts years dull or shiny. See if you have a similair company nearby

yeah, beware the "red oxide" you buy from car paint people as IIRC the lead oxide has been removed and all it is now is red tinted primer...

Some of that inferior gear made it's way on my van (the sprayed on stuff with white primer on top). The brushed on stuff is great though I can't remember what it was. Guess what bits have rusted through now...
