Since I'm determined to go up in the world, I'm looking at 4x4s but can't quite bring myself to stick with the normal sort of thing. Now I understand IVA/BIVA would have a huge bearing on taking a standard 4x4 chassis and sticking an entirely different body on it but I quite fancy going that route long term. I know getting such hybrids not to look ridiculous can be tricky as there are some very dubious looking ones about but really fancy having a go based around an LR110 chassis with a 300Tdi lump. Anybody have any experience of doing such conversions in the post IVA/BIVA era and can advise of any pitfalls etc that I would need to be aware of at the 'blue sky thinking' stage. I seem to recall there was a thread here some time ago detailing a few that 'Tattoedwhitetrash' had done, but couldn't find that one. But since we all love pictures here.....

As long as the chassis is unmodified, enough bits of the original (chassis) vehicle to get your 8 points............................ ................No IVA/BVA required Just a 'radically altered' inspection at your local DooVLA place and Bob's a blood relative. And as a bonus you get to choose what it says in the manufacturer and model sections on the logbook, MOT and tax disc

These are cool IMO, but only when they look like a car with a few inches extra ground clearance, not one of them 'donk' thigs they have the US. E.g. This looks great: Whereas things like this: look a bit silly, due to the huge gap between the chassis and body, and the visible chassis/suspension. There's no need for the extra distance between the body and chassis, and it looks worse than it would if the body was lower. I think one of these would look great done in a similar style to the light blue Volvo, but with some random ratlook estate (Mk1/2 Mondeo, Primera, Carina II etc) bodyshell on it. Would have to have a few battlescars though, a lot of mud and some offroad wheels and tyres.

Ovlov looks like its simply stored on top of an unused Landy frame, not a good look, IMO. Would be miles better if the landy suspension was jacked up, and if the frame rails were tucked nicely up into the Volvo`s bodywork

The easy way would be to do like the Red volvo and just plonk a stock bodyshell on a 4x4 chassis. The nice way to do it would be to chop the floor out of a donor shell and make it fit over the chassis, then use a big suspension lift to get the height. Both ways won't require an IVA if you keep the chassis stock.
The 1st option is the worst of both worlds - looks turd and no more ground clearance than the standard 4x4. 2nd option is the best of both worlds imo.

I do think the key with any of these conversions is to get them looking the body is integrated wit the chassis and not sat atop of it. Land Rover Defenders do show the chassis but there can't afford to be a gap between chassis and the body that mounts on it. Again the arch shape/gap is critical for it to look right.
Be interested in why the insurance company would decline such a conversion - mechanically it would all be to a standard but the control systems would probably have to be bespoke but that's not rocket science?

The rules say a 100% standard chassis so that means no cutting outriggers off, shortening or lenghtening nor welding on additional items like alternative engine mounts. As long as you can comply with that then you can plonk whatever body you want on the chassis. FWIW I measured up my Minor saloon agains my SWB Land Rover chassis and not a bad fit. Only problem was engine is mounted so far back driver would have been in the rear seat. Range Rover / Disco chassis and running gear is a better base than a Series. Vitara chassis is neat as well.

A mechanic friend of mine who specializes in 4x4s, built a Morris miner pickup based on a Suzuki SJ13 chase and running gear. It was made for a customer and looks spot on all most like a factory conversion.

This idea has been floating around in my head for quite some time, when the Viva is somewhere near finished I'm probably gonna start something using a Range-Rover 100inch chassis.....just havent worked out what to put on it yet

Volvo 740 and jeep cherokee (early 90s one)s are seperated at birth apart from the front end and the volvo is longer if you ask me.
Get a 740 stick it on a 110 defender chassis and put a cherokee grill on it.
that would be funny.

The rules say a 100% standard chassis ` Paul H You must be able to move internal crossmembers and engine mounts or SOC would never have kept the registration of Mayday. Matt

going to keep checking this thread as i know somewhere down south there was a celica, ta21 with a 4x4 chassis, and i want to see a pic as haven't seen it in ages.
I really lke this look done right. you must channel the donor. or at least extend the sills bit like a herald or series landrover so yo can't see the gap between chassis and body.
