I have to say that your driveway is looking particularly awesome with all that 70s and 80s American metal on it. ;D It just needs some 60s American metal to finish it off. Mrs Ku... mentioned that we just need a 90s yank and we have all decades from 60s to current covered with our various cars. Then she looked at me and said "that was NOT permission"

Righto, US Auto delivered the goods (litterally) so today I recieved my water pump. And it was the right one. I also got a new serpentine belt as the one on the car looked old, and thought there was little point of putting the old belt back on as a matter of principal... I also got a bottom hose but turns out the one on the car was mint so I didn't use that. And it went on with a minimum of fuss. Although I did mae the mistake of not taking the waterpump pulley off (or at least breaking the seal on the retaining bolts) before taking off the belt. They are way too tight to take out once the water pump pulley spins freely. And with the pulley in place the bolts and so forth are harder to get onto (without much skinning of knuckles) also the designers didn't really leave enough space to get it out with the pulley on. So there was a fair amount of swearing. I then had to get the pulley off in a vice. You'll notice my rather natty purple 10mm socket in play here. The problem is/was that Haynes in their wisdom don't fully detail the refitting process in the manual and the videos I see on YouTube the bloke or his tools are always blocking the action. It seems there is a doodad to retract the belt tensioner which was preventing me getting the new belt on. Getting the belt back on is the last thing I need to do to get the beast running again. Sadly it was time to pick up my daughter by the time I got round to asking on ThirdGen.org... Engine shot for those who have asked for it. Needs a tidy up and some detailing. Photo shows part dismantled state which is why you can see the belt but not all the cold air feed.

Haha, Alistair (ta for the engine shots BTW) I only asked about the rad cap because I have some new-in-box Stant racing radiator caps hovering around and was going to send you one a) to detail your bay) and b) because they're shiny. And nice. And seal well......they keep help keep your cooling system in fine fettle. It'd match with the Mustang too then I don't know if they'd fit but I would have thought they were pretty universal......I'd have to check the numbers. Man I do love the old TPI system. Such a nicely engineered intake.

RE getting the belt back on - that looks exactly like the ancillery layout on the Corvette, so if it's anything like the belt system on the C4 there's a tensioner on the AC side - it sticks out a bit, you can put a soft thing on it like the rubber handle of a hammer and push it down (standing on the AC compressor side you'll be pushing the nose of it, which points into the middle of the engine bay, down) - allowing you to refit the belt over it. Best done with two people - one to lever the tensioner down, the other to flip the belt onto it. You can just see it in the background here - just behind the nose of the waterpump. You just push down on the tip where the pulley bolts on. Requires some effort! Assuming it's the same, that is!

Lewis, thats what I was trying but I couldn't hold the tensioner far enough out of the way with one hand and get the belt under with the other. I then discover that you can release the tension on the tensioner and it flops out of the way by itself so it is a one person installation. You then ratchet the tension back on with a 1/2" socket drive. This "releasing the tension" bit is not mentioned in the Haynes manual.
mdh, I'd love a set of nice AREs or similar for it. The TQii's are probably OK for it, the 200s are too '60s I think.

Ok, slight misunderstooding about the tensioner but using a 1/2 inch bar on the recess provided means you can relieve the tensioner with one hand easily so you can slip the belt under. I thought taking the wheel off might make it easier. That's debatable...
All back together and running with no leaks.
Not had chance to see if this also has fixed the heater.

Sounds good! First time I did it all I achieved was to punch myself in the face with the head of a hammer.
Top dollar! Maybe the heater had an air lock in it - Mine packed up when the pump was going, for the same reason, or maybe it was unrelated to the waterpump but anyway......

Ha, heater still not working. Heater hoses have been cut off the matrix so I assume it leaks. Nuts. Not a cheap part to get shipped. Hopefully USAuto will have one cheap.

Nov 7th to Jan 23rd with no heater. Made an attempt to fit the heater I have owned since mid November. Of course I picked a weekend where I actually need the car on the road again next week as I am actually too skint to buy any more petrol, the Cadillac is low and the Pontiac has 3/4 tank. I'm paid Friday so Sunday I pull the dash out. Odd things I discover is that the reason the courtesy lights don't work is that someone has carefully removed the bulbs from each and every one (and as this is a yank car you got to know it has loads of them). No doubt I shall find out why when I try to make them work by replacing the bulbs and burning the car down... Anyway, thats a delight for another day. Benzboy called around Seems real happy - but he's not been on this for long. There's the little curse word, at long last. Thats how many screws were removed thus far... "Reassembly is the reverse process as per disassembly" No, still no nearer. The new heater rad doesn't fit. The inlet and outlet pipes do not match where the holes in the bulkhead are. So some tweaking is required. My little 'un came to help. "This car is called a Pontiac." And here's how we left it. This is all the dash junk we removed. PLenty of it and I hope I remember how it goes back together LOL. Chances of it not squeaking now? The heater hoses were also a bit of a mare. Can you see them? there is one outlet hiding away. I'll worry about that another time. Right now I just need to get it all back together some time as I am now off the road again. Pah.

What a bloomin' job that heater is! Still, at least the new one is in (ish). Now there's just the little task of screwing all that lot back together again... I think I'd be considering the "stripped-out racer look" ;D

That mysteriously unplugged multi-plug appears to be the signal from the head unit to the power antenna (electric aerial to you and me) so that is one mystery possibly solved.

Good God Akku - you've bought a working car
And quite a nice one - quite like the wheels - nudge for when you fit slots to it

That looks like one of those reassembly jobs where you use whatever screw that fits to fill the hole, then somehow end up with a series of leftover ones that don't fit anything

"You're not thinking of jumping over that are you Michael?"
GR8 work Akku, (R-R's very own unlucky Alf-type character). The dashboard of this car is class in a glass, i have never seen one before! I will doff my cap when that is back together and you have a lovely warm heater.
