Funny you guys mention the flywheel. When I was filming the noise on my phone, I couldn't help but think the rattle was inside the bellhousing, rather than nearer the sump. The flywheel is rather huge, and the bellhousing had to be modified to fit it. Dave Andrews the engine builder said that he was surprised to see the flywheel bolts had been removed and refitted with Loctite. I am guessing this was done before the engine was last fitted, when the engine was split from the box.....
Does this support a theory??

Owned a Phase 2 in the 80's and a phase 1 around '91.
Good to see they are still getting interest.

Blimey, it's been a while since I updated this thread. There will be lots of pics of progress soon..... The car didn't make it to the Gathering, in fact, it has been off the road for months, undergoing a lot more work than I had planned. I'm going to keep some of the details under wraps for the moment, partly because I like the idea of unveiling changes once they're done. Partly because a number of the works going on have been to address safety and quality issues that have surfaced, and I'm not sure how to deal with it on a public forum when it calls into question someone elses work. Anyway, based on the car undergoing quite a lot of bodywork, I am at stage where I am questioning the colour. Maybe my taste has changed, or silver never suited the car like I visualised. I chose silver in the hope of it looking like a quality classic, with a contrasting red interior a la - For me, it doesn't quite wow in silver in the flesh. Maybe the sheer number of silver cars on the road these days has dulled the impact when on a classic. So, I am exploring a slightly different way to go. I haven't found what I think is 100% yet, and wondering if you guys can help. I am looking for a solid, not metallic. I love the Posrche 911 Classic grey, but think it may be to pale for the Olympic. I also love these Porsche colours, but they're not quite there. (It's just a coincidence that these are all Porsche colours, I have been looking at everything). I'm looking for something blue/grey, maybe duck egg blue type range. Anyone else get any suggestions?

Love this car, shame you have had so many issues with it, props for not throwing in the towel ages ago, as good as it looks in silver, grey would suit it even more imho, the bodyshape isnt a million miles away from the 356 so anything that suits one of them should look good on it, how about Volkswagen L469 anthracite?

If I was the OP, I'd be gibbering in a corner now. As I scrolled down it was, "Ooh, yes, that would suit" then, "Now that's nice" followed by "I could see it in that", "Lovely", "Just right", "Beautiful", etc.
Never knew I liked grey this much!
BTW, sorry to hear of the woes and hope things are back on track soon. I love this car.

or going for the blues, what about speedwell blue I love this colour, however, in this case would not suggest it. The Speedwell Sprites are known for their history + colour. They also bear at least a passing resemblance to the Olympic. I would hate for them to be confused or for one to think they were copying another. Still love Blue though and am also a fan of Old English White. vintageman.zenfolio.com/p471168104/h1A556EED#h1a556eed

don't pint it a dull colour, its small and quick you want it to be bright so myopic idiots see you coming. Ask me how I know! As for the safety/quality issues - honesty is the best policy. Stick to the facts, keep emotion out of it. Spill the beans!!

It won't be dull I am always tempted to go orange, but I can visualise the Olympic in this kind of colour and am pretty sure it will realise the potential better than another colour. I'm going to keep the other info off here for the moment. Anyway, I'm starting to think of getting my own paint colour made up. I have seen two that I really like, and am pretty sure they could work best if mixed. Anybody know anyone online who could I get to make me up a sample of two different paints mixed in a small quantity?

Maybe you'll let us know once it's all sorted, so we can avoid the grief you've had. Mmmmm, orange...I can't picture it. It's a good colour though, maybe some photoshop would help? Don't some Halfrauds mix paint to order?

Hmm Orange Olympic : Yellow? Initially I seem to think of them in a dark red. Would like to see a sherbet orange though; slightly pastely? or a sherbet yellow, slightly whitish, tiniest bit green. There were two Lotus Elite locally one a straight yellow & one this sort of shade & I liked it so much more! Sadly it's now navy blue There's also a spectacular Salmon orange, slightly pink Lancia Fulvia Zagato that stands out nicely! something like this:

Just looking at some of the photo shop and while I love love love those colours, I am also aware that some of the "brighter" colours make it look like a kit car.

If I'm honest, I've always felt the same. When I say I am tempted by orange, I am still going down the blue/grey direction. In fact, I've just got a sample can of a mix made up. 50/50 of these two, I' experimenting to see if I can come up with my own good colour. Tweed Grey and Smoke Grey - Fingers crossed it will work as well as I hope.
