looking fab! I'm looking forward to trying to match your finish! With respect to clear coating (I need to and have clear coated a metallic basecoat on the galant) I'm not sure I've put enough clear coat down on the door shut I've done as a test. I think I put 4 coats down leaving 5-10mins between coats. I'm fearing it needed some more; especially when I get to do the whole car I want to leave enough for rubbing back...? no? Two questions really. How do I know, or to what experience can you draw on to know/guess that you've put enough clear coat on... ..and b) can I add more clear coat to my door shut now the latest layer has most definitely cured (I did it two days ago) Chris Chris It depends what you used to paint them with, if you used a spray gun and its 2 pack then 4 coats is more than enough, if you used aerosol paint then 4 coats might be a bit thin. The problem with flattening and polishing metallic paint is that if you rub through the lacquer to the basecoat then the colour changes and you have to respray the base coat and lacquer again. Yes you can flatten the lacquer and spray new on top, but you just need to use something like 1200 wet and dry, if you use anything too coarse to flatten it with then you will see the scratch marks through the new lacquer, but they will be in the paint so you wont be able to polish them out later Hope that makes sense Tony

Sorry been no updates for a while, but life has been getting in the way Anyway fitted the new boot trims and then that was it, complete now, been polishing it to death over the last week, in preparation for a photoshoot today, here are some of my shots of the day, the Pro's shots will be much better Nice to be able to stand far enough away to get the whole car in, the colour really came to life in the sun, but that has not come through so well in my photos Tris is hoping to collect it later this week, hope he likes it

Lovely. Geoff Weeks was ragging his e12 at Crystal Palace on Sunday Tony. It was great to see one used in anger.

Thanks Guys, it all seems worth the hardwork now, but your right Teaboy, looking at it, I wish I had been doing mine instead, hopefully one day soon I have a couple of E28's lined up next, one is an M5, needs arches, rear panel and front wings, at least thats all it looks like it needs, but I am too old and too wise to think that will be it , no painting or prep this time though, just the welding., sure I said that the last time

It really is superb now. The astonishing quality of your work is the main reason I joined Retrorides, rather than just lurking here. I wish you did work on Jaguars! David

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. Tris came to pick the car up last night, so its away back down South now, I think it would be fair to say he was very happy, and went off with a huge smile on his face, it managed all the way from Northumberland, down to Brighton, without missing a beat. Meanwhile I also received some of the photos from the photo shoot, Jon Cass - aka- jonc - on this forum, has done an absolutely amazing job with them. decided to upload them in a larger format so you could really appreciate them The First photo is my absolute favourite, I have no idea how he has made it look so moody and amazing Second photo shows me on the left, Jon said "stand there and look cool", not sure if I managed to, but hey ho, car looks cool anyway And a huge thanks to Amble Boatyard for letting us shoot the photos there So keep an eye out for it in Retro Cars Magazine, sometime in the next few months

When are you starting the m5 tony as I've got a spare slot in my bookmarks set aside for it? Should be about 3 weeks Glenn, but it won't be as involved as this, I hope

That's a gorgeous looking M for sure. This isn't a dig - the only, and I mean only thing I think lets it down are the >2001 number plates. After seeing the thread on here where one of the guys had a repro plate made up for the front of his 'B plate' Escort, I reckon it would be the icing on the ultimate cake Amazing work.

I often look at this photo and can't figure out how the hell you made this repair section. All the welding I'm currently doing on my Rover's opening my eyes too how hard making complex repair panels is.
