Crikey, you'll have your work cut out with that one! Thankfully mine is solid...
They are remarkable cars to drive. Good luck with the welding!

If you're not careful you'll get a reputation for rescuing old French cars, not that it;'s a bad thing to get a reputation for, of course.

During last week I've been spending a couple of hours messing with the CX. I took the interior out and started removing all the body underseal that somebody smeared on the inside of the car... surprisingly enough the floor is mostly pretty solid. On Friday I made a 400km trip with the GS towing a small trailer to fetch a good chassis leg for the driver's (left) side. That's one major problem made easier. Then I started cutting on the passenger's side, the better side of the car. This is the hole I cut in the floor, there's solid metal all around. The chassis leg on this side has already been replaced once and is in very good condition. The inside of the sill will need some work on the front as you can see. I'll try not to be bothered about the rusty surface on the bulkhead for now. Then I started cutting on the outside. The bottom of the fender was already made of filler so nothing was lost cutting it off straight to get to the inside The first bit of welding I did to this car was this piece of sheet metal to strengthen the door hinge reinforcement plate. Then I sprayed some sink spray over the first piece and welded another piece of sheet metal over it. I know this may cause new rust if I don't manage to get some protective stuff in between, but I saw no other reasonable way of doing this. The original construction used even more layers... And a final piece for the day... Well, the start is there ;D

Today I did some more welding... Well, I got the job done but it isn't the best welding ever. It's not horrible either and after some grinding it will look ok. It should also last for a while as the sill wasn't to bad to start with but I just chose to do one large repair instead of several small ones.

Before you throw heaps of money and more time would it be worth assessing just how much work needs to go into this car?
Not being a killjoy but surely there are better examples available fairly cheaply as it looks extremely rotten underneath.
On the other hand ignore me and good luck...

Think of the satisfaction of saving it though - CXs are getting rare nowadays so they need to be saved! Always picture the end result!

Before you throw heaps of money and more time would it be worth assessing just how much work needs to go into this car? This is supposed to be a low budget project. As you can see my welding isn't great and this is a practicing project. In Finland old cars usually tend to be very rusty given the bad winter conditions. CX's are rust prone and most are not very valuable so not many good examples are left. This one definitly isn't beyond saving. And I'm not looking for a perfect restauration, I'm just trying to get it in a state that will make it last trough a couple more hard Finnish winters.

To repair one of the mounting points of the chassis leg I first cut it out of the car, and repaired the rusty part... Then I welded it back to the floor... After this I extended a piece of panel under the floor that I cut out before. I didn't quite remember how the original construction was, or indeed know exactly what I was going to do to fix it, so I made it big enough. Originally the "buldge" in the corner was in the floor panel itself but it seemed that it would be difficult to make such panel. So instead I first created the buldge and welded it to the new panel. Then I cut most of the excess flat panel away again, leaving a two centimeter wide strip on the left and nothing on the right in front of the buldge. Then it was time to make some templates... And finally I put a new panel in place. On the right hand side the "buldge" sticks out from the bottom of the floor by about a centimeter. On the left the floor is welded on top of the small strip I left there earlier. I'm happy that this is done, now there's just everything else left to weld back together

Excellent work mate, like the 110 mile drive to get it home as well, trade plates ?! On the first pictures you see these stickers that say "EV-4469". In Finland you can buy such stickers for about 25€ per day, which includes insurance. You can basically stick one on anything that has wheels on it, although strictly speaking the car should be in such condition that it can pass an inspection. I was a bit worried when driving it home as apart from attracting attention by the way it looks also the tail lights weren't working (day time running lights are obligatory here). People tend to use such sticker plates also for example for visiting trackdays with cars that have some problems, but this is not strictly legal either as you have to give a reason for using those plates. Going somewhere "for repairs" and back is ok.

hey, the welding is ok, but I hope you already buried the wheel trims in the backyard ? :-) Actually they're still on the car, but I agree they're horrible and they will be binned. I know it says in the guys thread that the ride was bad on 16" wheels and low profile tires combined with the really soft suspension, but if I could only find some cheap 15" Alfa alloys that would be really nice. It's hardly a priority though...

This is a nice project. It's good that this one is returning to Finnish roads. There should be a lot more CXs on the road.
