Today it was time to start on the axle mounting points for the rear axle. They unfortunately all need major repairs. So I made this jig: Which with the help of some large sockets and a couple of bolts fits precisely here between the 4 axle mounting points and two of the towing hook mounting points. I'm pretty happy about how well it locates, so if I take one mounting point at the time out I should be able to get them back in the right place using this jig. Then I took a deep breath and started the job I most fear doing on this thing. Not doing this was not really an option. A previous owner had already given up on repairing it as it just had a big layer of filler and a piece of plastic stuck over the holes. Then I drilled out the spot welds to get it back to separate parts. The reinforcement (the same panel as in the right top of the last picture) is now looking like this. It's a bit rusty but not completely rotten and I think I'll get it back in a good enough condition to use it again.

This is pretty hardcore! Looks like you're doing a great job though.

Here's what the car looks like now. I just couldn't paint that floor black anymore as it looked so bad when I bought the car, so I bought red hammerite and used that, as red is the same colour as the car is I fixed that first axle mounting point, and I'm actually very pleased with how it turned out So how did I get there... well first I made a piece of new floor and some surrounding pieces. My jig showing the way. Then I cut the bad part off the reinforcement piece. I made a new piece, welded it on, and grinded it down. It looked pretty neat if I say so myself... Some industrial design Which resulted in this. With the reinforcement going here, exactly where it should sit according to my jig. As I needed to sink the floor down into the reinforcement piece I needed a metal ring. In fact, I'll need two as I need to do the other side also so I decided it would be nice if I could just cut those rings from a piece of pipe. So using my brilliant new hole saw and some blocks of wood I made a piece of pipe (Not sure if this was a good idea, but it worked) Finally I welded the metal circle that I cut out of the floor earlier back to the bottom of the reinforcement piece and welded the ring on top of that. (sorry for not taking a picture before paint, it's kind of hard to see with the bright colour).

Well, time to continue to the other side... here's what it looked like this morning, covered in dirt and filler. Here's what the same corner looks like now, much better ;D Fortunately after some grinding I found that the curved part of the bar on the underside is in much better condition on the side than it was on the other side. I hope I can still salvage the reinforcement piece from this mess...

Yesterday I made some progress on the axle mounting point. Today I also made the last piece that's still missing on that previous photo and drilled the big hole needed for the mounting point.

I now finished also the driver's side rear axle front mounting point. I made the same construction as I did on the other side but I took some better pictures this time. From this mess... ... I luckily managed to recover the reinforcement piece in a decent shape. Using my jig I could then position it under the car and weld it. Like this. After which I spotwelded a disc to the bottom of the reinforcement piece. With a ring on top. I welded the ring to the floor and to the disc in the reinforcement piece and this is the result!

Very impressive work and skills! BTW these come up quite often in Spain. Clean one at the moment for just over a 1000, also know of a very clean GSA.

Today I broke my 309 GTi spares car. What does that have to do with the CX? Well regarding what's in the previous picture not very much, but I knew that I'd have to break the GTi completely as soon as I started and I need something from the rear... I'm quite sure this is the world's only CX with a Peugeot 309 rear axle... And yes, its somewhat held on to the car... I'll have to leave this garage before February as another car club member will be using it until May. If I wouldn't have spend time doing this I could have repaired the axle mounting points under the boot floor, but I'd still not have a rear axle to put under it. Now I can spend a couple of months welding up the CX's own rear axle and doing some improvements to my slalom 309 and then in May I can start working on the body again.

So the car has been outside in the snow for about one and a half months now. This week I got my mojo back and started working on the rear axle. It really is pretty rotten, and this is the top side, the bottom is worse... The only thing I did so far is weld a big jig over the whole thing. This will hopefully allow me to remove those sheet metal parts that stick out to the front, then repair / remake them and fit them back to the same place.

A truely epic job, great to see I can't believe how rusty this car is! Thanks! No, it's more like utter stupidity or mental illness... And now for some jig-juggling... It may look silly but I've managed to convince myself where the completely dissapeared mounting points should be. This was bad... But it isn't anymore... This isn't going to be easy, and a big dissapointment was that also the center beam needs some repairs as Citroen in their wishdom decided to weld 4 pieces of steel on top of each other in some places.

Crikey . A rotton rear subframe has meant the end of a large number of CXs. I'm blown away by what's going on here, hats off to your dedication. I have a N/S/R rear wing (opposite side to the fuel filler) which I'm desperate to get rid of because I don't have the space. It's new old stock, never fitted. I don't want much for it, more important to me that it goes to a worthy cause. If you need one for this let me know.

Well that subframe and the rest of the car isn't fixed yet and I won't have any time to work on it for the next couple of months. I've got lots of work-trips coming up and the 309 and GS both screaming for more urgent attention.
Thanks for the rear wing offer, but don't think I'll need it. Whatever rust there is I can patch as this doesn't have to become a pretty car. Shipping it to Finland would probably be quite expensive.
