A canopy pick-up? It's like a pick up with a gazebo. Genius. It'd need some sort of dice/roulette wheel arrangement in the cab to decide who sits out back in the rain.

Was this poor thing repaired? Last I heard the insurance company want it scrapped and won't let Bob buy it back from them. A real tragedy as it's one of the earliest ones left on the road and there is enough skill and knowledge to re-build it.

Was the PB chassis built or a monocoque? Also... I'm looking for an exhaust manifold off of one of these excellent beasties (1725cc).... if anyone out there has one they wish to exchange for beer tokens.

Was the PB chassis built or a monocoque? They are monocoque...even the pick-up version! I checked this out about a year ago when considering a 'group build' project for Area 52. This was the best & most suitable candidate until I discovered the slight technicality of it not having a seperate chassis

There is supposed to be a restored Commer TV detector van at the national classic car show at the NEC this November. One of my college lecturers worked on the Ecurie Ecosse transporter. From what I remember he told us it had a flat 3 supercharged 2 stroke diesel engine! I dunno if he was talking shi..stretching the truth or not! Nope, he speaketh the truth. Search youtube for "commer knocker" Ive always had a wierd desire for a car with that engine in LOL. Not mega powerful but sounds badical You guys have just settled one of me and the old mans head scratchers...has anyone seen the special with one of these fitted we saw it at a newark kit car show built as a 1910/20s blower style car? I'm off on a googling mission

Hi All - some great pics!!
I am looking for one of the old TV Licence detection vans! Does anyone know of any owners? Even better if there are any Scottish owners?
Any help would be great! Thanks, Steph

Like this? Never seen one of those before, in real life or in pictures! If you've not already come across it, Commer Van Fan might be a good place to start... Good luck!

Lovely things Commers, that little pickup is well cool but you cant beat this for absolute win factor When I saw this thread I thought of this one! I saw it last summer in Salcome Devon and I think it's used for a promo vehicle for a shop down there! I've got some more pics of it I just have to dig them out!! Lol

Yep Volks...... this was the thread I was thinking of. Had me wondering if I could dream up a reason for needing a panel van in order to justify buying one! In fact one of these (preferably milk float type) with a chopped cab roof and lowered to flymo clearances..... with a V8 mounted where the milk crates would normally go would be a really cool custom and not that expensive to build.

Yes, yes it would. Why haven't you done that yet? Do it now! Go, find a Commer, spend money, hackyhackyweldyweldy! According to your signature, you've only got 3 vehicles, 4 is a nice round number I'd say

Ims, just noticed your end bit about a special with a commer diesel, I spoke to a gent in the 1980's who used to holiday near Grassington, N. Yorks he drove a car built to look like a 'Blue Train Bentley' fast back 3 seats etc, it used a Commer truck chassis and double knocker and it was big and awesome. I think he told me he owned an engineering co. in South Yorks and it was a one off built in his works.

According to your signature, you've only got 3 vehicles, 4 is a nice round number I'd say Errrmmmm...... that would actually be 2 vehicles and a locomotive, but I take yer point! Is actually 3 ve-hickles if you include my daily driver which I'm thinking of replacing with a Tomcat turbo coupe as they are almost becoming retro now. As far as the commer van idea goes..... yes... I did say it would be a relatively inexpensive build as far as customs go but no.... I did not say that such an awesome machine could be knocked up in a weekend. ;D Time is my worst enemy at the moment but if anyone lives in my locality and fancies a joint venture I'll provide the space down the lock-up FOC and pay half the costs of the build. There..... you can't say fairer than that!
