Right , bare with me on this one , it's gonna take a while to copy it all across so try and keep comments to a minimum for now.... Ok so from the start , back to the day of purchase.... 31 January 2010....Well after years and years of searching i've finally found a good base for a project. Picked up the new Beast today. 1987 D' reg 2.2 petrol 132k miles T&T till may! BONUS! Always wanted a Mk2 hilux but finding a decent one now has proved very difficult. Finally came across this example and just had to have it , she looks well shabby but she's solid in all the right places , Cab is solid as is the floor and most importantly the chassis. Only rusty places are bolt on bits I.e: the wings and the tub. Bought her as a non-runner with head trouble and zero drive through the box so I got her much cheaper than advertised after a bit of a heated discussion (after driving from Northumberland to Ilford in Essex in a recovery truck based on an advert full of fibs I refused to leave without her , so we struck a deal in my favour). Plans are: Get her running sweet on the 2.2 motor for now , sort gearbox problems , tidy up all the bodywork properly , Gloss black bodywork , satin black tubular bumpers and roll bars , dark grey rims and a grey tonnaeu cover. Basically gonna try and make it as close to my "inspiration" as possible (the Marty McFly truck from back to the future). Once she's looking tidy i'm gonna start with the V8 conversion. Anyway , boring curse word over , lets get with the pics.... Firstly the for sale pics from the ad... And how we got her home... I had been well excited at the descriptions I had been given over the phone of this truck , and from the pics she seemed to fit the bill and check all of my boxes... but actually seeing her in the flesh was a very different story and disheartened me a little , but being a very positive person I gained a little perspective on the way home and geared myself up for the project to begin!

Day 2..... Well after arriving back into Blyth at half 9 sunday night , the Lux had spent the night out on the street for 2 reasons... 1: it took us so long to get home that we ended up in a whole new season and 6 inches of snow! (which made the truck hard to push). and 2: I found the truck was too tall to fit on my driveway! (whoops!). lol Solution time , day taken off work and spent trying to get the truck to move under her own steam and onto the drive. the engine not only had head gasket bother but also contained no fluids at all (not even oil) , The battery had been connected backwards due to previous owner buying a new battery where the posts were on the opposite sides , the main fuse had been completely blown due to him connecting the battery backwards so the truck had no electrics , also the truck would not move under it's own steam and had zero drive in any gear and in any range. So I set to work on the first items in the street to try and get her driven onto the drive , first off was a trip to the yards where I robbed the neccessary 60amp main fuse which was blown on the hilux. Got that fitted then drained the engine and filled her with clean cheapo oil and she started... eventually! lol , head gasket was REALLY BAD though and she was chuffin a fair amount of white steamy smoke and missing her cock off so i decided to rip the head off at the weekend. Next on the list was to get the gearbox out and see what was up with that. Got everything slacked off and removed ready to pull the box off but it wouldn't budge any further than a few millimetres. After about an hour of persuasion she eventually came off with a big bang , it was at that point i realised that the clutch plate had been seized in position on the splines hence loss of drive. Cleaned and lubricated everything up and lobbed her all back together and she's now moving under her own steam! MINT!! Anyway , picture!... This was state of play when we got back , SNAAAW!!! This is the morning after we got back (my street wasn't bad compared to what we'd had to drive through). And the gate post disaster , modifying the gate posts was the next job on the list before moving her onto the drive for her engine work.... Before: After:   sorted! lol , let battle commence.

Well after wishing the remaining 4 days of the week away after mondays efforts I was itching to start on the head job! Ripped the head off her on the drive and found the head gasket was totally wiped out between pots 2 and 3 and into water jacket and oilways. Also found snapped exhaust stud so head was also going to need light skim and stud extraction. When i was stripping her down i came to take the alternator belt off and found that the bottom pulley was chattering back and forward due to the bolt being slack so i removed it to check for wear in the keyway and woodruff key but they were fine. After that my paranoia set in so i removed the timing case to make sure everything had been left alone in there. I also removed the water pump and checked for damage to the impellor blades incase she had been ran when frozen (from what i could gather when i bought the truck , the head gasket is reported to have given up around the same time as the really cold weather we had). All went well though so once skim was done on the head the plan was to put her back together asap. The offending item , probably still the original head gasket judging by the state of it! was a right curse word to scrape off too. lol Also , found the original toyota dealer front number plate under the drivers seat so i added "KEX" to my wall of fame in the garage.

10th February 2010.... Todays progress aint bad considering it's a school day! lol Got the prep work finished on the head , she was as bent as a banana but she's all nice and shiney and true now! Cleaned everything else ready so it can go straight back on.... Well after i got home from work and had ma tea tonight i decided to go outside and put the head back on. I was meant to wait until the weekend to do it but i couldn't wait that long. lol She runs good! Started forst turn of the key and defo sounded a lot better than she did when i originally pulled her on to the drive. lol Tonights first turn of the key vid: Sounds mint compared to what she ran like when i pulled her across the drive to rip the head off it:

11th February 2010....
Took her to work with me today and changed the fluids in the axles and gearbox and transfer box , greased the propshafts and steering while i was on. Was busy a fair while as some total dickhead had rounded off the rear axle bung.
Journey to work was funny , it gets some looks , some of amazement but also some of complete disgust and horror! lol She drives ok for a rough old truck , just as harsh as i was expecting but meh... lifted trucks are never the comfiest , they've gotta be firm. she drives nice and straight tho with no major problems.
She needs the front axle seals doin tho.
Ma wee list of priority jobs include:
1: Source and fit some diff camber correction shims to the front axle to take the strain off the front prop joints.
2: Strip and overhaul the front hub's/axle seals.
3: Rear propshaft joints require attention.
4: Fabricate an adjustable torque reaction arm for the front diff to replace the chopped , welded & extended item currently fitted.
5: New set of extended shocks (has a half decent set fitted but 2 are curse word out and one has damaged casing).
6: Steering damper.
7: Fit new indicator stalk.
Other things of a more cosmetic nature that will keep me busy will be the front and rear bars that are on the way and also the 3 seater bench which will be replacing the 2 alfa romeo seats.

New Block hugger headers , first trial fitting.... (Liiiiiiike a glove) Most of the bits i need to continue build are currently at the powder coaters getting blasted and coated , so in the meantime i decided to kill a bit time making the water pump alloy bell look pretty. lol New water pump alloy bell had a fairly poor finish for a brand new part , the casting was as rough as hell.... i set about it with the 3m discs on my air buffer... then got the bench buffer and polishing mops out , 4 different grades done in 4 stages.
