Quick update: Not much has gone on due to various issues regarding employment lately, but I did manage to get the door shuts primered on the nearside. I had actually already primered these ages ago in my Nans garage, but i chipped a bit of primer and there was glossy mist blue underneath, so i took it all back until i got to well keyed up primer. The bottoms of the shuts I bare metalled partly to make sure the shape was right, and partly to make sure it was definitely keyed up. I Also completed the filler work that hadnt been finished on the rear shuts where welds had come through from my custom inner arches. Ill be taking a little break from Thor for a while now as my motivation isnt as high as i need it to be to make the job as good as i want it to, but never fear, I'm making progress on the GLT instead, which will in turn get me motivated to finish Thor paint prep. Finally! Some progress on Thor! Ive been getting quite motivated lately to do some more. It is damn close to paint now when you stand back and look at how it is now Vs what it was say a year ago. Also, even though i am primarily concentrating on turboing the GLT, the dark nights and the fact that the GLT is outside mean that the only work i can do sometimes is indoors, so Thor will get some progress then. Basically the worst part of the car at the moment was the front wings, so I decided to finish of the shaping and try and get the bonnet and front wings in primer as per the rest of the car. They need a few tiny last bits sorted which I didnt get chance to do, but they are just about ready for primer, as is the bonnet. The reason they've required so much work is because one was a pattern wing with various faulty pressings, and the other was a secondhand wing which required various repair sections and panel beating. Hoping to primer them and flat them fairly soon, maybe this week. Steve

Not a huge amount of progress lately because ive been busy de-bugging the GLT with its B230FT swap and also started a new job, but the good news is, I'm now back on with Thor and expecting to see some orange fairly soon. First off was to have yet another attempt at getting rid of that damn wobble in the roof. Success! Also, ive made the decision to break my 940 as it makes more financial sense given the faults it has and the bodywork it requires... .....so theres been a slight change of plan to the engine swap plan - I'm going to swap in the B230FK from the 940 (obviously all cleaned up and painted and all gaskets and seals renewed etc) for the initial engine, but then build up my "fancy specced up" redblock from the original donor engine. This in turn is mega motivating because it means that when Thor is painted, whilst I'm waiting for the paint to harden or sink before I flat and polish it, I can get the thing driveable! Ste

Right, so lots has happened on Thor recently. Itll take ages to do a detailed update so I'm just going to put little comments with the photos. My Left rear door was one that came from an early car with no in-door electrics, so did not have the cutout for the rubber bellows. Thor will be having central locking and possibly electric windows, so i made a template from the other side and marked it out. Cut out. Its not super neat but itll do as its covered by the belows themselves, and i did test fit to check it secured into the door properly. My Right front wing is a pattern one and as such, the pressing isnt that brilliant and has taken a lot of correction to get it to the standard I want. The worst part of this was the front 10 inch or so of the swage line/ lower part of the wing. I had already filled it to try and get the correct shape, but it was apparent the metal was too high, so i bit the bullet and ground the whole front lower section back down to bare metal and started again after panel beating the whole thing down into the right shape. Ignore the unsanded stopper here as i was concentrating on getting the (difficult) swage line correct here, before then attacking the lower portion. With all this progress the girlfriend was feeling left out, so I introduced her to the grinder and she stripped the old powder coating off my rear bumper. She did a good job too, and I'm teaching her car skills because she wants a 144 as her first car! She finished that so i tought her how to flat primer ready for paint, here she is doing the door shuts I also got on with the door shuts as the aim was to have them orange by the end of the week. John kindly helped me out in return for some trade off work on his 164. He finished off both front wings, and has made a very good job of them, which I'm pleased with because I was running out of patience with them and there was a good chance me working on them would have lead to another period of being peed off and demotivated about the whole project. With me flatting the door shuts, and John sorting the wings, that was three whole days work. If you have your own project and are painting the door shuts, do not underestimate how long it takes to do a proper job of prepping them! There are so many edges and countours and detail parts of the hinges to flat/key that it takes an absolute age! Now for the exciting bit. Painting the door shuts! I can definitely see an orange car emerging from the primer now! I have painted the door shuts seperately as this is going to be my first full respray, and although experiences painters can manage it, I didnt want to be having to concentrate on the detail of the shuts whilst also painting the outside of the car. It took a whole two hours of sheer concentration to wave the spray gun around correctly to get even and complete paint coverage on every surface. I soooooooooooooo love that orange! (Oh and i painted a little bit of the rear quarter just for motivational reasons ) Unmasked the following morning and I can see how well the orange and chrome is going to look... I also couldnt help but spend ten minutes giving that rear quarter a quick flat and buff. Its full speed ahead now to get the rest of the car looking like this Oh, and ive also bought some RH 5x108 wheels.... More soon! Steve

More progress... Prep for refitting the rear screen... Re-attaching the aluminium trim to the rubber seal. Warning to anyone removing a rear screen from a 242/244 - the trim does not need to come off in order to get the window out. I made the mistake (way back when) of removing it and its a massive ball ache to refit. Trim on, brand new tinted rear screen in the seal, gaffa tape removed Flatted (and then polished but no pic) the area around the seal Repainted the interior side of the surround/parcel shelf area in satin black. Was covered in various shades of primer and orange overspray and i hate removing interior trim to see a horrible mess underneath. Aaaaaand in it goes. Ive also been busy flatting and polishing the roof To say thats had a new roof skin I'm damn pleased with how straight it is! The flatting process was 1200 wet, then touch up any minor pin/dust holes, then 1200 wet again, then 3000 trizact pad on a 6" DA sander, then a good buff with G3 and then G10. I also trialled the black rear panel using gaffa tape. Really pleased with how sporty it looks and once the rest of the car is flatted and polished ill be painting it satin black So good to see that number plate back on the car (albeit only temporarily as I'm going to get proper riveted plates) I painted the inside edges of the window frames satin black. One of my pet hates (especially in bright coloured cars) is seeing unfinished bits of bodycoloured bits making their way into the interior. Refitted the window channel and the door seal. both cleaned and the door surfaces rustproofed before fitting And then for the final thing today, I fitted the window regulator and window. I am using 164 window regulators simply so that i can use the nice metal winding handles instead of the flimsy plastic 240 equivalents (they fit differently onto the spindle so non interchangable) More soon. I'm so motivated I didnt want to come home today!! Steve

Great job with the paint! I look on the club forum from time to time and haven't seen anything for a while then suddenly it's nearly all painted. The side in the picture looks nice and straight all that filling etc has been worth while. How did the roof come out in the end as that was a bit of a major undertaking ?
You posted while I was typing ! Roof looks great and I like the black rear panel.

Haha yeah well I stopped updating the thread as it was all becoming very tedious and actually posting yet another update of "guess what? its still not painted" was actually demotivating me. Figured i would leave the updates until something cool actually happened.
Dead happy with the whole job really. Feels like my efforts have paid off. I'm having to be really patient and not flat and buff any of the rest of the bodywork (bar the roof which i did ages ago) as I want to give it at least three months for any sinkage to occur so that i have the best chance possible of removing it with the final flatting and polishing

That interior looks great, and maximum points for coming up with creative solutions.
FYI, Suzuki Ignis sport have recaros in a similar style, with fishnet headrests. Sort of thing you're after?
