Another update.... Got most of the O/S arch deundersealed now. Just a few nooks and crannies to finish off then can get some primer and stonechip and chassis black on there. Should be quite nice and very motivating. Got that dodgy paint off too....or most of it..... ....until the wire brush decided to have its malting season..... .....and take it out on my neck.... Also started to get the crossmember ground down ready for refurb, but its a bit pitted in places so I'm going to take it into work and sandblast it and then use etch primer on it. Got bored and wondered what a volvo would look like in seat flame red too... More soon, possibly tomorrow. Steve

Stunning work mate, I'm really enjoying this thread. I really like the theme/route you are taking with this, modified and improved in all areas but keeping it original looking. Fantastic.
All the more impressive is that someone as young as yourself is enthusiastic, motivated and skilled enough to take on something like this. Mucho respect to you, well done and keep us posted with your superb project.
Good luck mate, Richard.

Cheers guys, yeah, my general way of thinking when working on cars is that if its worth doing a job, its worth doing right. I don't want any evidence of me cutting corners when the car is done, and i don't want any jobs left unfinished. Basically, I want it "perfect for me"

Right, didnt get that much done today, but nevertheless.... got the underside of the slam panel deunderseal and ground down a couple of patches of rust (top and bottom) and put some rust converter on. Next i'll take it into work and weld up all the holes that are not used to go with the smoothness of the engine bay. Also got the top side of the radiator crossmember in etch, after de-rusting. And refurbished the n/s mud flap bracket More in the week, might get my slam panel done. Steve

Just had a read through this thread properly and I have to say I love it for 2 reasons...
1: I have a major soft spot for these old Volvo's.
and
2: You're doing something I always wished I'd done in keeping an old family car from your youth alive. There's something special about the cars you grew up with , no matter how mundane they seem to everyone else. I always regretted not saving my dads big old 1980 Datsun Laurel (one of the barge-like old shape ones) when that went to the great scrapyard in the sky... I was only about 11 when that went and I wish I'd had the balls to take it on at the time as you did with this Volvo.
I wish I could locate some of ma dads old P6 rovers too , in fact when I think of the cars we've let go over the years that would have been really cool now it's fairly heartbreaking! lol
Hindsight eh!
Anyway , keep the updates coming... love what you're doing mate.

TonyBMW, cheers for the comment
Will, cheers, yeah ill keep refurbished stuff safe inside the car or my Nans caravan.
d7uge, cheers for that, yeah I'm really glad ive taken on the project. It was always fun before I passed my test tinkering and refurbishing, but doing a full build like this is what its all about. I could have so easily let this car go and it would have more likely become a decorators van for my Uncle - boy am I glad that never happened!
Its sad isnt it when you've just decided you're going to ask for a batch of Volvo 139 mist blue clear over base for christmas...haha!
Also just decided I'm not welding up the slam panel - there arent many holes that could be welded up anyway, so I'm just going to leave it as is.
Off to work on the car for a couple of hours just now...will post an update in a while.

Right, just got back from doing a couple of hours on the car. Was aiming to get the slam panel in primer, but as usual, thing don't go to plan. Got it all sanded down, de-rusted, and flatted down. Then primed it with etch primer, which is where it all went wrong. ....then as it dried it all cracked and crazed..... I think its where the etch primer is on top of original paint (i.e. it cant etch). I used etch primer because it had patchy bare metal patches where i had sanded/de-rusted it. I'm guessing what i should do is aim the etch primer at just the bare metal patches and then do several other coats of spray can red oxide over the top of the whole lot. Opinions? Steve

Looking good Steve, apart from the annoying slam panel!
You painted that panel in the past, didn't you? Do you know what type of paint you used? It may be something (cellulose?) that is incompatible with the etch primer, causing a reaction.
If that is the cause, you'll probably get a similar reaction with any other primer, unless you use a barrier coat first to isolate the existing paint.
Best solution is to take the whole panel back to bare metal. It's a very visible panel if you're taking the car to shows, so you don't want any risks of a poor finish there.
John

Cheers - you should get a 240 - they're still brilliantly solid cars and can withstand being a daily driver easily!
