ok guys you lot are totally to blame for this ;D since scouring the other rides section ive been hankering for a moped to renovate in those cold nights in the garage, posting in the wanted here seemed sensible as theres lots of pedders on here, also a chance post on vzi came up trumps, however it did incorporate an 8hr drive to clacton and back (did collect some bits for the caddy also tho) firstly and most importantly, i know NOTHING about mopeds, or anything engine related really so this will be a very steep learning curve. my only experience of anything motorbike/moped related was at 14yrs when i rode a mates puch, came off and nearly ripped my knee socket out, so why exactly do I want another well in truth the red lowered one a few posts from this one on here just gave me such a want face, hence my tomos will be a "little" like that one, stripped as much as possible, hopefully some kind of candy red and ermmmmm i had it laid down in the estate, drained all the fuel out of it and laid it tank up, however theres a mess on the boot carpet and when ive put it in the garage its now leaking slightly.....what can this be ? ive taken a few pics, also the owner said this model came without indicators and a key, no key, but in one of the pics isnt this an ignition hole any pointers, advice, cool pics, a dedicated tomos forum or anything else would be well cool. i'll be back very soon with a million questions I'm sure. for now: ;D

Haha wicked , a tomos bullet, I had one as a field bike a few years back... Cant remember much of it tho... The oil/fuel mite be one of a few things, First , Is it oil or petrol? If its oil , is the bike selfmix oil or do you put the oil in the fuel tank (its a 2 stroke so you do need to have 2 stroke oil) If its selfmixing theres another tank for the oil somewhere. Which will probably be leaking out of an overflow or breather. If not then forget that.... ;D If its fuel Its probably out of the float bowl of the carb. Its normal for a bit to be left in it.... If its coming out of the engine/crankcase then do you know if it has a seperate oil supply for the gearbox? I know the "gearbox" on these is as simple as dog sh*t but it still needs lubing up So could just be that coming out..... Cool project tho.... Look forward to some updates...

Forgot to say, These things can be very very fast... Faster than a tuned maxi I'm sorry to say... But the one i had i ended up breaking for bits. And a guy from southampton came to pick up the cyl head and i think a hub.. And he turned up on a bright green one , Loud as hell and I'm supprised he could keep the front wheel down when he pulled away....

ok all, just started the stripping (of the ped ;D) noticed firstly what I thought was the ignition keyhole is actually just a lock to hold the front forks in a slanted position, like a steering lock, no key though so need a new one of these. daveyboy's given me an ingenious way of removing the brittle hard handlegrip, 10-15mins in a kettle /bowl of water should soften it right up. my ped doesnt have indicators, most of the pics on mopedarmy show some little bicycle type reflectors on there, can i fit indicators and/or will I need them for the MOT if they wern't fitted from factory I want to remove the BIG rear light/brake light for something more cool, maybe an iron cross or something similar, would this be possible?? presume its just a case of rewiring the new light ?? are there any interchangeable parts with other peds, like puch or similar, and where's best other than ebay to get parts, if I wanted new off the shelf for eg. lastly for now and most importantly, painting the frame, firstly how do i remove the old paint, it looks like a handjob (so to speak ) as its very thick and cluggy (is that even a word) would nitromorse work or do i just need to sand it all down/off. I'm really digging this, liking the brown but the whitewalls i think look ace too ;D

success ;D took the chain guards off too and found all this loose wiring, is this normal ?? also removed the front mudguard, tried the rear and nearly sliced my finger off with a screwdriver, wd40'd the nuts and left it for tonight, now autosol'in the handlebars and petrol cap. am i right in thinking coca cola is best for rusty nuts i think ive read somewhere that if you soak them overnight they're as good as new next day. this right ? thanks

Wahey nice one dude glad it worked!! I've heard that about cocacola too defo worth a shot I'd like to see if it works, wonder if you can use the 19p sainsburys cola to save moolah or if it's a secret tooth rotting ingredient in cocacola that makes it work?!!

i know fella, was well chuffed, soaked for 15 mins and a good tug with some gripy gloves on and the handlegrip came off no probs.
gonna get some "propa" coke on the way home and "treat" her to a good nut soaking session, i'll post the results 2moro. internet says to keep checking the nuts as eventually it may dissolve the metal !!! eek

Class!
You won't need indicators at all (regardless if they were fitted on new ones) as long as you fully remove them and the switch for them.

Cheap vinegar is great for removng rust from metal, buy the real cheapo 'value' stuff & soak for a few days. Looks like another moped thread I'll be keeping an eye one. ;D

ok moped guru's ive done a little more to the ped today, removed back brake and wiring and also engine wiring for the front lights/horn etc, removed the back wheel and rear shocks, oh also exhaust too. got lots of pics but for some reason my computer refuses to talk to my phone atm ive found this guide on the net www.scribd.com/doc/13281570/1988-Tomos-A3-Workshop-Manualis there anything else I should know, or from experience you would or wouldnt do in conjunction with this guide to removing the engine. i "think" I'm nearly at bare frame stage, ready to paint I'm in no mans land here and winging it every minute as I have so little experience in all things mechanical. any pointers would be great, i'll be checking back in very soon asking lots of stupid questions about the carb, how to clean etc thanks ;D

To be honest mate you might as well spray the frame yourself. It looks pretty straight and has nice flat sections so should be quite easy to rub down then blow over with cans or a gun.
