101bhp sounds like a good figure for a 1.8
I've done some reading and it seems a Weber DMTR on the 1.3 HK engine combined with the inlet manifold from the LHD only mk2 Polo Coupe S/GT with a GK code can see up to 75bhp. Not bad at all!

[edit] This was a long winded post requesting help with my new carburetor but I eventually got it all sorted after some teething problems. The Weber was taken to bits and cleaned with a couple of cans of spray cleaner. An official gasket and choke cable were sourced from fastroadcars, who I would recommend to anyone with one of these carbs. Had a massive facepalm moment with the vac pipes that didn't help (had them the wrong way round to the dizzy and airbox) but in my defence they are the opposite positions to the standard pierburg carb

As the car has just received another 12 months MOT with no hassles it was treated to a new set of wheels. I've always liked the classic bottle top Montreal alloys on small-bumper Golf/Jettas. Looking much smarter now.

Love to see an early spec mk2 being saved, I've had a few myself and I love the chrome equipped models. I'l just leave a pic of my old digifant converted early GL here....

That looks really well, those very early ones were made with better metal and don't rust as bad as the later ones.
Plus it has the mechanical-head engine carried over from the MK1, they did away with this the following year with a major redesign. Shame, because your earlier one revs better and has a little bit more poke (just a little less refined, and without the electronic ignition, than the later hydraulic tappet version) very unusual to find one looking that clean and with such low mileage!

Sorry, never replied to this but thanks for the interesting information about the engine. Not much to report on lately, all 3 engine mounts were replaced because I was getting a lot of movement and noise under acceleration and up steep hills. That taught me something else about the 1300 mk2 Golfs though - they changed the front engine mount design around C/D reg - it was a struggle to find the right parts for mine as nowhere seems to make replacements. In the end, a later engine mount was used that meant new brackets as well as the mount. Going to need some new shocks soon as the standard ones are quite tired. Can't decide if I want to lower though and by how much. Possibly something like 40mm wouldn't be too overkill!? Other than that - some better pictures!

That looks really clean, good save! I'd try and keep it as near to original as possible as you don't see too many about now.

This car is cracking. So pleased you saved it! As has been said its good to see one that hasn't been "scene'd". I'd not even drop it personally.

This looks absolutely great!!! If i saw that parked on the roadside i'd stop for 5 mins and just admire it. I'm loving the unmessedwithness of it, the bottletop wheels are top shizz as welll, sort of a mod thats not a mod. Tremendous work!

good to see this is still going, I've had two of the 1300s, and I can say I wouldn't want another unless it was a 5 speed. 40mm is enough to make it look more presentable, but if it was me it would be on its backside lol

I absolutely love this. It's when I see cars like this that makes me think I should just run a retro as a daily

why not? I've been running mk2s as dailys for years! the way I see it is with a retro (depending on what it is), it may break more often, more its usually a cheap fix. With a new car it may break less often, but with more cost involved

Without sending this topic widely off-topic, the one reason I've stopped using a retro as a daily is the fear of rust.

Cheers for the comments Nice to know it's appreciated in spite of it's relative standardness. I think the entire mod list is a new stereo, Weber and the wheels. adrian - The 4 speed is a bit of a nuisance but I guess it was quite common for cars at the time! I can just about live with it, definitely stops me from speeding on dual carriageways and motorways Other than that the car is fine as a daily driver. With my MR2 I'm ultra paranoid about rust and never drive it in the winter but this car fills me with confidence. It just seems like it won't rust.

oh it will but will be greatly prevented by keeping inside the rear arches and inside the fuel flap clean (and keep the drain hole clear), especially in winter, they are the main water traps/killers of mk2s. Lower spec models are slowly becoming more valuable, mainly due to GTIs rocketing in price but also because they tend to be ex-grandad mobiles and theres few about with a meticulous history. I put GL rev counter clocks in my last one (plug straight in, as long as you get early ones with 2 plugs) and got a shock! it was at about 3400rpm @ 60mph! I know mk3/polo and 1.4 mk3 golf 5 speed boxes fit, as they're all "slant forward" engines unlike the big blocks, might be worth sourcing one to save some fuel and enjoy a more relaxing drive? I always found it painful to drive the 4 speed on a motorway, it was screaming!
