Hey Chaps! Does anyone have any experience with electric paint sprayers? I'm seriously considering getting my hands on one to lay some paint over the bus. Frost sell this one; Which is £145. This is the spec; The Spraymate is a high volume low-pressure compact spray set-up, which is more economical than conventional spray methods. The system gives a contained operation, which is directional with little or no over spray. It is a complete plug in and go system. The lightweight gun has a 1 litre cup and 2 pattern air cap - horizonal and vertical. A 1100w 2 stage turbine, 3 metres of flexible hose. What are peoples opinions? ?

i've thought about these as a cheap homejob respray for myself. in the right hands i'm sure the finish would be pretty good, after all it's all in the prep aint it.

I've got a big compressor and decent spray guns but was amazed at how easy these HVLP (high volume low pressure) set ups work and finish. Neighbour bought one just to do fences (£75) and has made me want one for small jobs as very little overspray.

Think my Silverline one was <£50 brand new on E-bay... Cost isn't what I'm asking about though. It's quality! Have you used yours? How did you find it?

Haven't used one, seen a mix of good results and orange peel though - seem to make quite warm air so need a good water trap. When you can get Aldi comps for £80 or Netto(?) ones with 50litre tanks for similar £s, I'm not sure they're worth it vs the control you get with a comp (and gun choice etc).
A Sealey gold gun is about £35, with different setups about £8 each so yer cheaply sorted for squirting top coats and high-build primer out of the same gun.

I used one, I never could get to grips with it, I think it was the one Practical Classics "best buy" rated it, Seth owns it now, unless he's moved it on since.
I think because I'm used to a proper compressor and spray gun I didn't find the knack to it.

Ive got an Earlex and its been great, sprayed loads of stuff with it, just finished a set of wheels over the weekend. The main advantage over a small compressor is that you don't have to wait for pressure to build. The only drawbacks are the that its quite loud and the plastic gun isnt the easiest to clean.

I've never used one of these, but If you are spending £145 you aren't far off a £30 gun and £150 compressor, which will be a versatile investment with some aldi air tools (Impact gun for £15, grinder for £12, Nibbler £12, tyre inflator £12 and blowgun for £5)
A £150 compressor will be sweating at painting a full vehicle, but if you can find a second hand one for that amount you'll be fine

This is the Apollo I used. I haven't got room in my small garage for a compressor and with flats directly above the noise from one would be too much anyway. Being hvlp there's very little over-spray so it doesn't make too much mess either. One thing you have to be aware of is the decreased drying time of the paint as the air flowing through the gun is warm but you soon get used to it.

Not hugely on topic but your Van was one of the cars that got me into old Fords! I remember reading the feature in Classic Ford Years ago. I loved the way the side stripes turned into flames!

Cobblers, I got thinking the same thing yesterday afternoon. However, when you think of the price of a compressor (and I would be after min 100 litre) plus collection, plus regulator, plus hose, plus gun etc it all starts to add up. I will 100% definitely be buying a compressor in the future (I have air tools) but this is about a cheaper solution to enable me to get some paint on the bus.
Anglia68, thanks for posting the pics! I'm thinking about going for a smaller cheaper unit like the one you used and taking a punt and crossing my fingers. There are some on ebay that look pretty good for about £60.

That little Bosch setup up looks good, I think I might have to give one of those a try. Concourse paint doesn't me, a reasonably neat job is more than enough.

Cheers Qwertina, that's one of the best compliments I've ever had about the van.I like little details like the flames but they were often missed by people.

I had forgotten about plums's previous exploits with said paint gun. And I am in exactly the same boat as he was re:spending cash on paint vs cash on car. A £60 gamble is something I can just about justify. I think I'm gonna be purchasing one of these babies come the end of the month too!
