But I'm an impatient perfectionist - and that's two atributes that don't mix very well ;D oh well, you must be a relative from my wife ;D was the can ready from the shelf or mixed for you ? Most motorfactors and painters offer a service, where they mix you a can , the paint match is almost 100%; and it is not much more expensive than the normal spray cans ....

No, it was one from the shelf... Yes, I'm going to a painter and have a can or tin of paint mixed. Another lesson learned I guess Thanks! Was worth a try, though... ;D Cheers, Jan

Hi! Short heads up... Collected 4 freebie allloys today. Still wrapped in good winter rubber (but from '94... ). Made me think - who needs an estate anyway...? ;D More updates probably by next week when the other half of the carport is free - with even pavement. Cheers, Jan

Hi! First: a shot of the shot Barock alloys... They'r from 4 different manufacturers, but whoi cares. Maybe I can get more free Barocks to make a set (or two) Second: Time to crack on!! Went to a wedding over the weekend, my parent's caravan is still there - I have the large part of the carport with the even pavement for the next 7 days. Unfortunetaly, I sort of 'wasted' this whole day by trying to remove the anti roll bar........ What a child born out of wedlock to remove... Never had tha much skinned knuckles in a single day... But after a bit of violence, wild swearing (swearing helps lots! ;D) and more blood it was finaly out: What's left of the day I spend stripping the underseal with a political-speech-gun and a scraper. Searching for the spot welds to drill out. Can you see how shiny it is under there...? I hope I can remove the wheel arch and weld in the new one tomorrow. But basicaly; I'm on it again! And best of all, the engine started immediately. And I found another broken ignition wire, which explains the rough runing. Fettled with it a bit - and we have smooth and even firing on all four. That said... I want five cylinders... Thanks for reading as always Cheers, Jan

What's a 'political-speech-gun'? I think I missed a joke here. Are you replacing the entire inner wing too? That seems like a big job.

Yes, hot air gun ;D Yes, I'm replacing the complete front wheel arch It's bodged together and I had to buy the complete arch anyway (no repair sections available for the rusted through sections). So I'mgoing the whole 9 yards. And then I can say that mycar wears the second before last wheel arch that Mercedes produced ;D Todays progress in pictures... The two removed panels need to come back, as they'r both NLA. Means; carefull derusting and repairing. I hope I can at least find the triangular reenforcement plate as a 2nd hand panel. The bonnet hinge pocket I think I can repair The rest of the day was used to drill out most of the spot welds holding the wheel arch. I need to buy a new spot weld drill tomorrow, the old one is pitted and doesn't cut well anymore... Argh. They'r so effing expensive! Hmmm - well, much less progress than expected today, but well - I'm always working slower than I want ;D ;D

Todays progress in pictures... Oversleept and didn't listen to the clock ;D Bought a new spot weld drill bit, some more abrasive stuff and new cutting discs (bargain price at 0.89€ each for the good 1mm thin ones ). Had to take out the grinder for some spot welds, as I couldn't reach them with the drill. Took lots of time... But the effort was rewarded by a loud, dry *plonk*: Not too many horrors revealed, no new ones anyway: ;D always wear eye protection and don't stick dirty fingers in your mouth: ;D Ipersuated myself to new goggles after I fainted in the A&E when the doctor started poking my eyeball with his needle. Trying to get a metal splinter out... This however made me scratch my head a little... That's 2mm of steel rotted through! The old wheelarch... And then the apocalypse started and forced me to a break... ;D Stripped a bit paint to make repair panels... And now all the laps are covered with phosphoric acid to get rid of the rust. Tomorrow I'm going to make the repair panels for the firewall and will repeat the phosphoric acid treatment. That's all for now. Still raining and cold and dark... No in the mood to continue... Cheers, Jan

Did not need the mental image of needles and eyeballs >.<
However, I can see why you're replacing the whole inner wing now I see them side by side. Makes a lot of sense.

Short update: no real progress has been made. Not on the Tea (teeheehee - that's how I call her from now on ;D Tea!) anyway. I was mainly having a rough time making the repair panels for the fire wall... So all Idid was basically produce a lot of scrap metal and shaping my panel beating skills (which were not under-developed, but not present at all ;D). One of the better attempts... But I couldn't weld the Tea anyway, as the last half week was verry stormy and windy - so welding was out of the question (remember: open car port). But in the meantime I was running out of days, the carravan was approaching... I bargained a few days for the Tea to stay in the car port (and the caravan on the street), whilst I even the other side of the car port. And that's what I started today; by ripping out the pavement. This is how it was before: I hope I end up with an even pavement in the end I should've done this from the start - but I thought 10 days would be totaly sufficient to fix the firewall & wheel arch. And whilst I was dragging tons of paving stones, the sky turned into funny colours and night fell... *WTF!?* Which was followed by this a minute later: Which made me jump and do this, in a brainless panic reaction ;D Ok, hope that wasn't too boring ;D We have not had such a violent hail storm like this for at least 12-13 years It was realy brutal, pics don't show it realy... Anyway - I hope I can finish the pavement by the end of the week and then I'm able to work relaxed on the car, without pressure and deadlines. As said - I should have used the 10 days for the paving and not for the tea - but oh well. Another lesson learned ;D Cheers, Jan

News on the carport front: Removed a lot of paving stones... Dug a hole... Realised I had to remove tons of sand and stones and no space to put them except the garden... Set concrete plates as divider for new and old floor... Evend the new floor and put on loose sand as even as possible... Got a smal compactor. Ready for tomorrow to compact the sand/ground and then comence laying the paving stones...

That was some hailstorm you had, I wouldn't like to have been caught out in that.

That was some hailstorm you had, I wouldn't like to have been caught out in that. It's not unusual for the Black Forrest area, but our little village seems to be somehow protected, so we rarely get as violent storms like this Ok, at the danger of boring you lot again, I've almost finished the carport today. Compacted the underground (and the cable, several times ;D)... And this is how far I got today. Almost there... Totaly knackered now... Didn't think it would take this long... Cheers, Jan

Last off-topic post, I promise ;D It's 34°C in the shaddow - and I finished the pavement. Put sand into the gaps, vibrated the pavement. Done this 3 times - now it's even and solid The Mini is leaning to one side, btw Needs better adjustment of the HiLos. All ready to jack the Tea up and continue fixing it's bodywork Finaly! Cheers, Jan

Good work on the carport Jan, can you temporarily sheet the side and rear gaps on the carport when welding?

Thanks guys! I realy hope I can make it 'mega' sometime, but first priority is to get it into driveable condition realy Fancy stuff - later... And I can't get that silly idea with a 300D heart implant out of my head... ------------------------------- To the updates. The work of the last days. I realised that I can't move the car, unless I brace the body and/or remove the engine... So I bargained that the Tea can stay where it is, untill I finished the wheel arch. The wheel arch gives a LOT more strenght to the chassis then I thought it does... So, yeah. I started to fix the bodywork. Firstly, by more practicing welding, sheet metal forming etc. First panel to attack was the stiffening panel that houses the bonnet hinge. It's still available new, but I'm on a budget and it's expensive... The hinge panel, bit rusty in places: First patch welded in and dressed up: Second patch fabricated: Trick-welding to close too large gap. That copper sheet I found turned out to be GOLD: Patch welded in and dressed up: Next was to attack the chassis leg upper part: Patch welded in: And I finaly got a repair panel made that is a good match to the firewall. There's a lot going on in a very smal space, so this was by far the most difficult panel I ever had to make - even if it doesn't look like much, it took me a few days and at least 8 trys... But I learned a lot about how metal reacts if you beat it. Not finished yet as you can see, but the worst part is done. First time I've done a complicated panel. I'm no panel beater, soI had to cut it. Would've loved to make it without cutting, but that would take a lot of skill I don't have yet... Anyway: Hope you enjoyed. Cheers, Jan

Took all my currage and started cutting the firewall... Repair section welded up after some minor adjustments... Allready good fit without trimming... Chassisleg dressed up & last cut welded up... Why I hate magnets... ;D Second repair panel for firewall... And a bit of a funny story; I sold the boot lid Ihad left from my W124 estate on eBay. Turned out the buyer is only a couple of miles away. And too restores a blue W123 estate ;D Isn'T the world a smal village? Cheers, Jan
