I think dual fuel, given the increasing difficulty in finding LPG, has to be worth some serious consideration. Even an emergency 10 litre tank that can be squeezed in somewhere and topped up as needed would be worth its weight in gold on a journey like that.
Or use a marine type stand alone fuel tank with quick connectors that you just sling in the boot when needed.
With the current high fuel prices the Land-Rover has been costing around 32p per mile… ☹️

Good save on the switch. It’ll probably outlast a modern replacement anyway. It looks like the terminal screw was loose for decades. In my experience, it’s nearly always the neutral one that you find loose. It’s always worth checking terminal screws on anything you have the cover off, regardless of whether you went in there for that or not.

Cool.
Some measurements and a tpi count will confirm the thread size, but it’s almost certainly BSP.
An adapter down to something you can screw a hozelock fitting onto should be simple.

Remind me; is the long term plan to move the steering wheel to the proper side?

I think I’d sooner risk taking to the air in something knocked up out of old pallets than one of those Djinn contraptions. 😱

All up to personal taste, or the lack of it…. Exactly. I quite like green. I’ve been driving a green motor, and riding (or pushing) a green motorcycle for most of my adult life, but if ever there was a perfect example of “too much green”, that is it. I would much prefer this one 👇

Sometimes wires like that are redundant earths from the telephone line.
Our old house had some strange wires around the front of the bay window. A chance conversation with a neighbour revealed they weren’t ever to do with anything electrical, but had been used to support some climbing plants. 🤣

I would think that’s a pipe leading into a soakaway.
A permeable membrane would stop some migration of gravel, and make it easier to dig out periodically to sift out the silt, but would contribute to it being prone to silting up quicker.
French drains work well, but they’re not maintenance free. It’s a compromise between relatively small amounts of work and expense now, with an ongoing requirement to dig it out every few years, or spending a chunk of cash and effort on laying out a proper drainage system with removable gulley lids that can be cleaned quickly and easily.

Had time to look at the offending rear brake Friday. With the wheel in the air it was possible to feel a slight rub. Nothing dreadful, but definitely enough to be the cause of the problem. Wheel off and I get my first clue as to the cause behind it. There’s a fair amount of soot from my leaky, smoky exhaust. Not surprising really, when the rear part of it looked like this before I changed it at the end of November: Not many pictures I’m afraid, by this point I was too grubby to be taking any, and a bit up against the clock. With the drum off it was clear that I’d got a piston seized in the wheel cylinder. Properly stuck. It took a bit of heat and some brute force to free it, and when I got it out there was loads of black gunk on the piston. I think the amount of black soot inside the drum points to that being the culprit, but I’m not 100%, so I’ll probably put a pair of cylinders on the next parts order. Doesn’t hurt to have them in stock. I might have the other side apart the next dry day we get, just to be safe. With the pistons both out, cleaned and refitted with a generous dollop of red rubber grease, a quick bleed up let me have a visual check that everything was moving as it should. 👍

I have just taken on another motorcycle. I know, I know, practice what you preach. My excuse is it was too cheap to pass up. It’s a family bike too; it has been in bits for decades, and I’ve had my eye on it for at least ten years. One of these, not this one, but one like it. Very little has happened with the Triumph since taking it on nearly 18 months ago, other than sorting out a V5 in my name, getting the tax class changed to "Historic" and doing a whole load of rabbit-hole diving researching the model's weaknesses, strengths and trying to decide what the best course of action would be with it. I was discussing it's possibilities (and my indecisiveness) with a mate at work, the upshot of which was him saying "if you decide to move it on, let me have first refusal". Recognising it is just another thing stopping me doing all the other things I really need to be doing, I have had a rare attack of sensibleness and have sold it to him. So that's one less reason for not working on the Austin.

Afternoon. 😃 A couple of years ago nearly, you might remember me dealing with this: By fitting a new pair of cylinders, like this: Well, the other night I got home and noticed an odd smell at the rear; something hot that shouldn’t be. A cautious hand on the n/s rear hub revealed it to be quite hot. So. Investimigations… report to follow.

Fame at last! You have been name checked by Maximus Ironthumper in episode 25 of Project Kermit on YouTube! Can I get an autograph?..... Yes, but I’m afraid I’m now so famous that I can’t even afford to sign my own autograph. 😂 Max and I have been exchanging emails for a couple of years now, since we’re both Land-Rover and Cummins converted truck owners, there’s quite a lot of common ground.

Double-declutching becomes second nature in no time if you have enough mechanical sympathy to understand what it is you’re asking the mechanism to do. Given your evident mechanical abilities I’d be astonished if you couldn’t master it. It’s simply a case of matching engine and road speeds for the gears you want to mesh.
Once muscle memory has set, enough miles in the car will see you only using the clutch to pull away.
