I bought this last september 2010 having decided I wanted an early turbo car. This came up, was pretty local and within budget. Since then, we've had a fleet reshuffle, getting a nearly new mondeo estate. If I take the mondeo to work (long commute) then swmbo is finding the saab hardwork to drive as it doesn't have power steering (bearing in mind when I bought the saab she said she didn't need a car )
So now i'm on the hunt for retro/classic car with PAS! swmbo now has a yaris! still for sale as i've set my heart on a mgb gt
Its had its MOT this week and has 12 months fresh ticket and tax until december 2011. To quote the MOT tester, its "remarkably solid underneath". The garage is a old school garage so I was sitting in the car up on the ramps whilst the tester was tapping the underside - he was thorough! I had a gander undertneath and the only welding/plating is to the drivershaft tunnels which is a know rust spot on 99's and 900's
History of the saab. I found the car on the UkSaabs website and the previous owner is a long time 99 turbo enthusiast who has a concours 99 turbo (and I think his dad was into saabs too). they got hold of the car from Yorkshire as it needed some mechanical work, got it sorted and put it up for sale.
apparently the car had been stored for a number of years (10years plus IIRC), came out of storage approcx 2006? but was was vandalised. the tyres had been slashed and the side glass smashed. the damage was fixed and the car sold on once before being acquired by the PO.
The time in storage would account for the low mileage.
Condition:
The shell is solid but the paint has some rust blebs here and there (temporarily painted to keep surface rust at bay but the car is garaged anyway). The car was repainted by the dealer when new when a replacement boot lid was fitted by the dealer. doing some research I have found that saab factory paint was notoriously curse word and the early boot spoilers were water traps, encouraging the boot lid to rot. This one had a replacement lid by the dealer with a revised rear spoiler, and the car was stone chipped and totally resprayed under warranty. as many have suffered serious rot over the years, this one was been protected by the repaint and storage.
when I bought the car, the PO had:-
- refurbed the brakes (they are superb)
- reset the handbrake
- fitted a new wastegate diaphragm
- refurbed the fuel pump
- recon turbo
- new clutch plate
- set up the mechanical fuel injection
- inca alloys powdercoated
- plugs
- new battery
- new thermostat
Since buying the car, I have done:-
- new radiator (£140)
- new electric push fan (£40)
- new genuine saab thermostat
- rebuilt starter motor (£84 with 12 month gurantee)
- new engine earth straps
- new Kilen front springs
- new Gabriel red ryder red dampers
- repainted the front grill
- repainted passenger wing mirror
- new osram nightbreaker headlamp bulbs
- new aero style wipers
- chrome spot lamps (have the original bosch rectangular ones)
It needs the headlining redoing as its sagging but I have a roll of new headling to go with the car. I've also just ordered a new ignition switch, which will be fitted as soon as it arrives.
i'm as also fitting this week new plugs and new HT leads.
its got a wired up towbar fitted and comes with a set of 3 spoke saab alloys/tyres (ideal winter alloys?). In the boot is a space saver spare and there is also a full size steel spare.
negatives:-
- driver seat material has split
- saggy headlining (pinned up)
- speedo broke(again) last week so a replacement is in the post currently
Viewings are encouraged. I've got nothing to hide.
I hate to use this overused phrase but these are pretty rare cars in the uk with probably about 50 left on the roads and come from a pretty unique era of motoring where road based turbos were just becoming mainstream.
cheers
Matt
