I remember my cousins Cavalier got nicked years ago. It was only about 18 months old at the time. Police rang to say theyd found it on a driveway a few miles away, by the time my cousin went to pick it up it had been nicked again! Never resurfaced after that, maybe it got burnt out and stolen by the scrap man?
Sorry to hear about your granny, but I guess if any car gets nicked this is the most probable outcome.

I remember 30 years ago when my Anglia got nicked from Newcastle city centre and ended up in the west end also. When The cops rang me up they told me it was in a right mess and undriveable. When I got there it was in exactly the same condition as I had left it !

I had one of those heart stopping moments earlier when I went to get my car from the random house estate its parked in (I'm at uni and can't park on campus), and it wasn't there!
Then I noticed the road surface had been skinned so went looking for it, and found it 1/2 a mile away ... phew!

lucky your not in the uk or else youd be the one who gets locked up and molested for protecting your property and having a firearm I bet even if over here you got shot at ,and having no gun ,hit him over the head with a lump of wood you would get sued by the thief for compensation for ruffling up his hair, stitches to the head and distress and have to pay a huge amount out to him come to the Uk and live where victims are criminals !! sorry rant over No the only bad part was it took for ever to get my 45 back . The law in the US has gone your way some though . It used to be that if you caught someone tresspassing or attacking your family or yourself , the law saw it as what ever you did to them , it was their fault . Now it's a matter of degrees . Like if a unarmed guy is stealing your parts , you can't just shoot them . Shame , that it's that way , because when you could just fill them full of double odd buck shot , there was a lot less thieves ;D SORRY to hear you have to buy another car Andy

As an example, about five years ago I had a motorcycle stolen from my yard. 2 days later, jmy wife rang saying she could hear it in the woods behind our house, so I went looking, in a car. to cut a long story short, I "found" the bike with the front bumper, putting the rider into a tree, then chased him with a tyre iron for a couple of hundred yards shouting "I'm going to F***ng kill you you little B*stard". No-one local has tried to steal from se since then. Police wern't interested particularly, they checked my insurance , and took the guys shoes away for DNA. The funniest bit was his excuse for not stopping at the scene of the accident., (once they found him) which was "The mad B*stard was chasing me with an axe...." Oh, BTW mr Sky.... Mrs S has read this thread now, and says that being 3,000 miles away, a religous minister and owning a large gun will not save you from her wrath....;D .

Theiving little gets.
It seems you can't win these days. Drive something modern and vaguely desirable they either break into your house and rob the keys and or drag you out at the lights and beat the curse word out of you. Drive something old to avoid this, they nick it anyway because it's the only thing they can nick with just a screwdriver.

I don't think they do, not directly, anyway. The first call I made after the police rang was to the insurance company, who said if I'm not claiming for the theft of the car it won't affect my bonus at all. And as I don't want the car back I'm not getting charged for the police recovery/storage jobbie either. (£30 a tonne, versus £150 recovery charge? they can keep it) Talk about speaking too soon.... although the police and the insurance both told me on the phone that as the car is scrap and I don't want it back I wouldn't get charged, seems no-one told CF recovery that, cos I just got a bill in the post for £150 plus £20 per day from the 20/11 seems that the car "has now been released to yourself" ie me, and "It would be in your best interest to contact us regarding the above vehicle to avoid escalating costs". Ho hum... think I should ring them, or pop to newburn for a word with Mr Storage Manager (no name, illegible signature) in person? Oh, I got a leter from the police today too, saying how as a victim of crime I can use their counselling service. How nice of them.

I got a similar letter from Consett Recovery when my Starlet got taken there. They said it was just procedure and I wouldn't have to pay.

That's the last thing you need when you've had your car stolen and burnt out. On the one hand the Police are offering someone to give you counselling, and on the other there's a letter from a load of meatheads wanting a wad of cash! Totally messed up

say to them all you needed was informing where it was if local and you coulda gone and got it
you wont be paying any money as the recovery cant charge you as its not the cops that took it away innit? - you cant be held responsible for what the cops did

LOL, could be worse. Many moons ago, I had my Astra stolen & burned out. First I knew it had turned up was when I got a letter from the recovery/storage pirates demanding £150 recovery fee + £30 per day storage fees, for 30 days of storage. This was quite astonishing, as according to them, it was in their 'storage' for 24 days before it went missing. I told them to get stuffed.

Surely you can't be charged for them keeping a car against your wishes? If they wanted to recover it thats up to them - and thats what tax is for, to pay them to do their 'forensics' etc... what a joke that they would charge you for the pleasure of not giving it back! i'm trying to put this situation onto say an '04 focus that was found unburnt - a £4k car you want back, and they think they're going to charge you for keeping it on you?
err, no.

Righto, Ive been doing some googling. The letter, as you can imagine, is rather worrying. BUT, at the top it says TORT (1) INTERFERENCE WITH GOODS ACT 1977 so I googled that, and found this. www.tameside.gov.uk/tradingstandards/factsheets/31which clears it up a bit for me. The letter complies 100% with the law's requirement for a part 1 notice, meaning basically that I must either pay for the "service" or forefit the goods, and transfer title to CF recovery ltd. It is a legal requirement, the police cant transfer title for me as they don't own it. I do feel that it would have been better if the letter had explained (or even mentioned) this instead of demanding around 15 times the car's current value and insisting I ring their 0870 number as a matter of urgency. It would also be nice to have a name of an actual person to deal with too. I cant help feel for anyone less savvy who suffered the same circumstances, the letter really does read like "you owe us £300 pay now or we're sending the boyz round", and it's not helpful to police/public relations at all imo. It wouldn't take much to add a sentence that says "We are required by law to serve you this notice in order to claim title to the car, If you do not want the vehicle back please phone us and say so, it wont cost anything, but we can't scrap it until you do." I think I will be replying to Mr Manager by post, within the statutory 30 days (but only just) and using a second class stamp. cnuts
