Hello fellow Retro Riders! As I have probably said, I'm a second year studying Documentary Photography at Newport. I've decided to create a thread on here as I progress through my project, as a fresh perspective would be great, rather than just opinions from other photography students! Typically, a lot of my photos do have cars in them and this is no different. This time my topic is the Scrappage Scheme, feeling really rather strongly about this, I am aiming to create a piece of work to show the absurdity of the situation. Rather than just cliché scrapyard photos, I am photographing the interiors to a very high standard, as if they could be in a brochure, however each will retain evidence of use, so something isn't quite right. My method is fantastically complicated, and each photo ends up being a labour of love, or at least a few intricate hours of tablet induced masking. There is definitely a state of mind to sit down and work on each photo, usually aided by pretentious tea and Supertramp. I know what I want each photo to be before I take it. Then I combine several exposures, and different flash power and angles. Each of these will have a particular element, be it the seats, windows, doors etc exposed how I want it and then I cut them up and put it together. Once this brief sketch is complete, I feather it and mask it to make it appear as a whole image. After this I add additional shading and finally some highlights. To blank the windows, I use cheap shower curtains draped over the car, although rather ghetto they do work quite well. Here's a few examples. Any comments are welcomed, if any parts look out of place or wrong especially. For humouring me I will happily share some of my motorsports photos, which are rather beautiful if I may say so The first realised image, I know the steering wheel is out of focus, I doubt I’ll use the image. I don’t think the last one works well. Leather does seem to compliment my technique though.

Looks like a bag of weed in the glovbox of the Ford in the last picture!
Nice idea though. Whats the car with the picture taken of the back seats, creame leather? BMW?

first one, the view is just right and i would expect that to be in a brochure for sure.
a very good idea for a topic and presented in a unique and thoughtful way. 45 admiration points, well done.

What a superb idea! I really think that those interior shots send out a much stronger message about the wastefulness of the scheme than simple pics of cars in muddy scrapyards ever could. Very impressive!

Impressive!
Did you have to clean the interiors before hand, or were the scrapped cars valeted before handing over to the dealership (or, is everyone elses cars apart from mine clean and I'm the only one who's car is full of rubbish ;D)

Great pics, great idea.
Reminds again of the absurdity of trading a perfectly good car for a small 1200cc Eastern-mobile.

Excellent choice of subject and fantastic execution. Top marks for showing some of the sheer quality being trashed due to 'consumer' ignorance.

I think its an awesome idea and one that you have really carried out well.
It drives the point home very strongly without descending into cliche or condescending methods - a visually stark reminder of the lunacy that's going on! It certainly made me cry out a little (lot) inside when you realise that these cars are now more than likely cubed.
If this is the approach you're going to take to all of your work then I think you have a very promising future ahead of you. To see (and take) opportunities that convey a message outside of the conventional....you will certainly get peoples attention.
Your technique is awesome! I love the look you have created. Shower curtains FTW! You've managed to achieve studio style shots without a studio - again, showing how you're approach will get you far. Were these taken outdoors? I really hope they were because its so awesome to think you could get a shot like this in the street ;D
My only slight criticism is the last shot - on a compositional note the steering wheel is too dominant in the frame when viewed as part of a set with the other shots. As a standalone shot is works really well, but with the others it doesn't have quite the same impact as the rest.
Please don't think I am slating it (I'm not at all - I think it's a great shot) but the other shots are of such a high quality and have such a great visual presence that the last one just seems to be a little bit out of place.
Please post up more shots as & when you take them - this thread is by far the best thing to have come out of the scrappage scheme in my eyes.

Shower curtains are quite a popular way of making a cheap flash diffuser so using them on car windscreens is an excellent idea.
TBH I really struggled with the concept at first but now I (think I) understand it I think it's very clever.

Amazing technique which delivers the message perfectly.
Although you have made me sad, as one shot is of a Mondeo Ghia X...I miss mine now!
Great work though, you've got a real talent behind the camera, you'll go far.

Wonky steering wheels frustrate me, but it's a cracking idea and well executed! Shower curtains. Great!
