I’ve had a very good day indeed! Steve Haigh gave me a lift down to Southampton to pick up the 240 GLT estate that I bought on ebay. It is a very late GLT, being 1990 built. It was delivered new in Germany and imported into the UK in 1992. I knew the car had a/c, but I was not prepared for all the other extras fitted which came as massive bonus! The original owner must have spent a fortune. The car has: Air conditioning Cruise control Limited slip differential 7-seat pack Volvo towbar Graphic equaliser Volvo foglamps Locking wheel nuts Roller load cover Boot tray LED ambient temperature gauge Metallic mid grey paint (which I’m told was not available on UK GLTs) Probably some other bits I've missed There are faults with the car, some bits of rust, and it is certainly in need of a lot of TLC maintenance-wise. But it came with 5 nearly-new tyres, a new exhaust and 6 month MOT. This is absolutely the best £450 I ever spent! Lots of cleaning and maintenance needed under here! Cruise A/C Ste tries out the child seat! Diff testing! One wheel was on a sheet of ice Some nasty bits Many thanks go to Nick_ovlov who spotted this. And to Steve for the 500 mile lift! More photos tomorrow when I start the clean up. Cheers John

THat's a lot of car for £450. I have an irrational feeling of want for one of those.

These are the only Volvo I really ever liked (I used to work for a Volvo main dealer). Mint it up and leave it standard! What a bargain.

Oh, that's nice. I've been casually looing for a GLT with A/C, glad I didn't see this or I'd have been after it. What are your plans for it John?

THat's a lot of car for £450. I have an irrational feeling of want for one of those. No, it's not irrational. Practical, nice to drive, easy to maintain/modify, and going up in value. Go for it! These are the only Volvo I really ever liked (I used to work for a Volvo main dealer). Mint it up and leave it standard! What a bargain. Oh, that's nice. I've been casually looing for a GLT with A/C, glad I didn't see this or I'd have been after it. What are your plans for it John? thats a cracking buy for the money ,i have to agree tidy it up and leave it or you could always sell it to me ,oh go on you know you want to LOL To start with, it will be kept standard and made respectable, if not totally mint. But later I'm thinking a little more speed... I had originally planned a V8 (Chevy LS), and I might still go that way. But, I do love the way this drives, and bearing in mind the fully loaded spec, I'm thinking that a Volvo 2.3 redblock turbo might be a better swap - to make it a "super GLT" and keep more of the original character of the car. Anyway, plenty of time to enjoy it as-is and think about the upgrade choices while the 164 gets finished! Today I washed the car and made the Virgos look a bit better. I removed the tacky "England" stickers I also did an unglamorous but vital job - freed off and lubricated the bonnet latch and cable that were trying very hard to seize up. John John

I had an H reg 240 Torslanda a few years ago - thought about dropping a bigger engine in.....tried hard to break the one that was in it, but it withstood everything I gave it. Love the way they drive.

I had an H reg 240 Torslanda a few years ago - thought about dropping a bigger engine in.....tried hard to break the one that was in it, but it withstood everything I gave it. Love the way they drive. Yeah, they are pretty tough! And the driving experience is great - charmingly old fashioned, but not crude. It manages to be relaxing and quite sporty at the same time; there's lots of feel through the controls. This engine feels stronger than the '87 GLT saloon I had a while back. This one feels fairly quick for a non-turbo car. On the way home, I was super careful and did not rev it, due to the cambelt's unknown history, but 3000rpm (showing 80mph) was easy with minimal pressure on the accelerator, and it felt very lively and responsive at that speed - like it wanted to go a lot faster! It also has no piston slap or cam/valve-shim noise, which they're prone to. This makes me think it's basically a healthy engine. Long-term, it won't be fast enough for my tastes, but it will be fine to have some fun with as standard for a while, then hot it up later. There's plenty of time to think about the options while I get my 164RS project finished! John

Massive want from me, especially since you have the bizarre buttoned interior which I quite like. There used to be a black with grey graphics one of these in my home town, I'm pretty sure the wheels were the same as yours but in black with red centres to the spokes.
We joke that Volvos are hewn from solid blocks of granite by burly Scandinavians, but in that colour it could be a fact.

That is fantastic. Possibly the best £450 car I've ever seen. Thanks, yeah, a similar 1990 GLT estate, but without the high spec, went for £1,087 on ebay recently - I know because I was outbid on that one! But now I'm glad I missed out, in favour of this bargain! to say I'm envious of you would be a massive understatement, that is quality! Thanks! Massive want from me, especially since you have the bizarre buttoned interior which I quite like. Will be fab, when it's minted up in due course. By the way, I also got a real bargain on collectors car insurance. - Comprehensive - Social domestic & pleasure, inc commuting - Only £50 excess - Breakdown cover - Unlimited mileage £150.00 for the year It was through the Volvo Enthusiasts Club insurance scheme John

I am feeling ill at the moment, so no more work done on the car. I did manage to find the strength to look through the documentation though! Both the service book and the handbook wallet are specially branded for the tourist/diplomat sales. The cruise control is a "VDO tempostat" Installation instructions for the graphic equaliser The service history, although not fully complete or all-Volvo, is better than I thought Service mileages: 626 9,611 18,706 30,630 41,935 50,573 61,465 68,405 81,850 107,574 113,693 ... and there the record stops, although the previous owner has clearly done some servicing. The oil, distributor cap, plugs leads are new, the fuel filter is fairly new and the handbrake has been adjusted. However, the fan belts were loose and squealing when we picked up the car, so I can't rely on the completeness of recent work. It has now done 151,500 miles. I also have some details of the original owner, so I might politely try to get in touch. I'm very much hoping I feel better for the weekend, so we can do the planned work on the car. John

Nice find. These Volvos are strangely appealing in ways which I don't understand. Big, square, heavy, slow and thirsty and yet somehow cool.
Also, measuring engine speed in revs/second?! What are those crazy Swedes up to?

Nice find. These Volvos are strangely appealing in ways which I don't understand. Big, square, heavy, slow and thirsty and yet somehow cool. Yep, they have great character and are fun (but not fast) to drive. Much like the '68 VW Camper I had - but that really was slow! They pass the most important test that I apply to any car - does it make me smile? Also, measuring engine speed in revs/second?! What are those crazy Swedes up to? Yeah - weird isn't it? And the capacity in cubic decimeters! That my friend is serious win!! Makes my 240SE look like a Pop Plus! Thanks! I was really lucky getting this one - best OE spec 240 I have ever seen. The SEs like yours usually have a good spec, but they were a bit random and variable because I think Volvo were using up all the left-over parts before the 240 went out of production. Cheers John
