well it started out good dad got me to the station, bus got me to airport, and flight was great ;D Then came the trouble!! John picked me up and took me to the car, it wasn't quite what I expected, tatty paint, rust on chassis and didn't run quite as well as I hoped, also leaked oil from rocker cover when we got back from the test drive. When i picked up on the faults John did seem genuinly surprised and upset so I believe he honestly did not realise how bad it was, which is probably due to the way his mobility has deteriorated which has stopped him really getting involved in a car he loved. If it was closer i would have probably walked away but I could see the potential and it was a long walk!! So after the paperwork etc I set off. It was fun and I was really enjoying it but it would keep stopping at junctions and would be a pain to start, I though a tune up would sort that out. Then the battery started going flat and it was now getting dark so I drove where I could on side lights. Newcastle was fun! rush hour traffic in a stalling car which doesent start was no fun at all. Eventually got on the Yorkshire moors and found a layby to kip in for the night. Morning came and it had to be bumped to get it going. Stopped in York for a sightsee and again a bump to restart. Because of the hassle i decided on a quick return from here so no Humber bridge or tamworth or Damage's caff Got as far as the M18 and that was where it went quiet as the engine died!! It started again with a bump before I came to a standstill and went a short distance before dying again, It felt like lack of fuel. I coasted to a police only ramp and wandered off to the phone. RAC duly arrived and started to poke about. A few checks found plenty of fuel and that the battery was ok. By this time the starter which was now deemed faulty had given up so we could not check for anything else. So out with the A frame and a relay started for home So now home and not a happy bunny

Your home, the new motors home. Thats what I call a happy ending! I'm sure its problems can be sorted pretty easily. Good luck, and nice motor

thats a great shame, still, I'm sure its nothing major!
I'm suprised its not as described as john posts a lot on the r3w forum and seemed like a very genuine and knowledgeable chap, it was advertised as having a little rust on the chassis was it not?
a leaky rocker cover is standard on all reliants - the kitten register has had runs of alloy ones made like fitted to my car.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it! be sure to keep us posted and if you need any reliant advice or parts (nothing rebel specific here I'm afraid) let me know!

Great story! I like that you factored in a road-side kip in your newly-bought retro too - proper road-trippin'! ;D
I'm sure the problems won't be much - can't be a lot to go wrong on those, surely?! Looks great in the photos.

hehe I am smiling because it is home and it will get fixed ;D When it went it went well and made me grin ear to ear ;D As I said, I do think John was surprised at how far it had gone in the time he has lost his mobility so it has left us both a bit down about it all. A bit of mekaniks, some welding and some fibreglass repair, mmm, retro ownership, ain't it great

Yup. Get the Rover tomorrow - thankfully it's merely got to make it about 10 miles and no planes involved! (I can't stand them!)
Still plenty of scope for problems but fingers crossed eh?

Sounds like a honey: "GJR 11L Joined: 28 Jun 2007 Posts: 73 Location: Near the border. No, not that border! Reliant Rebel 750 for reluctant sale. But I'm not trying very hard so I advertised it here first! Spec: 1972 Reliant Rebel 750 Estate in original Tangerine or, as BMC had it, Blaze paintwork. Original 750 crankcase with liners bored to +0.060", main bearings strapped and bottom end all balanced. Upgraded camshaft (not reground from original blank, but a 8,000 Mile-old Kent item). High capacity Cooper 'S' oil pump and steel skew gear, good9-spring Austin Healey-spec clutch, recent wheel cylinders and master cylinders (brake and clutch in the latter case) mini 25 seating, Mountney wheel, fitted electric washers with 1.5ltr bag to comply with SVA (handy if you wanted to fit a different shell). Weber 32ICH carb. K&N air filter, fitted oil tank on inner wing for instant visual level check and tank has K&N breather filters. Triumph Stag coolant tank with standard Rebel radiator, but with 92 degree Imp thermostat so it will run hot enough unlike most of them which stay around the 'C' mark no matter what you do! Fixed, four-blade fan replaced with twin-bladed one in case you catch traffic, but no coolant loss and never overheats. Manifolds matched to ports and gas-flowed, Electronic ignition without contacts or condensor - ultra-reliable Pertronix "Ignitor", as sold in the UK by Aldon Automotive with their own label attached at twice the cost. Lucas Gold 40KV "Sport" Coil and very thick silicon leads. Brakes amazingly good, but then it weighs less than 3/4 as much as a Herald, and the brakes are designed for that car! Lovely chassis, no rot at all, recent front and rear springs with new dampers at the front. Modern headlamps, but sealed beams available if required, original carpets not mint, but all there and protected from new with mats. Excellent compressions (all around 195psi as they should be) and oil pressure 35psi at hot idle, 55-60psi hot at a steady 84mph which is 6,000 rpm in 4th. Will pull 7,000 quite effortlessly, and rev to 9,000 in 2nd, 3rd on the way up the box, which is a Rebel casing with later, 4-synchro gearsets and baulk-ring type synchro with bigger bearings ex- Robin. Last time she was set up on the dyno, bearing in mind that the Reliant 750cc engine gave 35bhp at 6,000 when new, this one had 48 at the back wheels, or not far shy of 60 at the flywheel! To put that into perspective, she's a 600Kg car! 60 usually comes up in around 8 or 9 seconds but the best bit is the handling: When you think that the rearward (55%) weight bias is going to catch you out, it doesn't, the car just sticks to the road like sh!t to a blanket and lifts its inside front wheel as you floor it. Great fun and there's only really Imps that can stay with it in Autotests and such like. Price by negotiation, with or without reg, which I can sell easily and would if the car were to be exported, but I have stacks invested in this and it won't be cheap. Only selling as the DVLO and my Doctor are hassling me to give up the manual box for an auto. John. Fri Sep 28, 2007 11:10 am" Looks like a honey! Congrats, get it sorted soon!
