Oh dear what have I done, this ones a biggy even for me! So yes you know that car you've always wanted, but generally thought you'd never get, well for me its a Series 1 E-type Roadster. Dream was to get one by time I was 30th, but well for my 25th I've just managed to get 90% of the way there - of course it did mean spending the house deposit, but who needs a house when you can have a car! How you ask? with this - Its a Tripple C Challenger, fibreglass body made from a mold of a 1961 roadster, running gear is 1976 series 2 XJ6, so running gear wise its very similar to a series 3 E-type. So basically an E-type that doesn't rust, costs a lot less, has some sort of reliability and brakes that work! So why is this a mad plan, well cos I'm in Germany, the car is in Somerset and I need to get it to Coventry so I've bought the thing on good faith! I'll fly back to the UK, get a train to the car then drive it to Cov, easy..... But then this thing has done 450miles since it was built, 10 years ago and most of that is MOT'ing! It doesn't have a hood, although there is a hardtop that 99% fits......yes its another one of those cars! So the likelyhood of my plan working is well very little, but that's not going to stop me giving it a go ;D And most importantly the plans for it. Well enjoy the summer then get to know it more intermately in the winter. But 1st it needs the correct light trim fitting and basically being made to look more like this, but without the wires, I fancy something different for the wheels anyone got some ideas and no that's not a real one, its a Challenger, see its a pretty good replica. Deffo needs wheels that fill the arches though, mebbe something like race ones had ;D Oh and it needs a Moto Lita steering wheel, and this and that etc etc etc! God I've not been excited like this since I bought the Escort! (Hmmm wonder if I'll ever finish the SuperMinx, or get around to making the Escort faster....?)

Erm, not a million miles away from that except all black and a little more chrome, easy enough to replicate. And side repeaters will be the 1st thinks to go (replaced by leather straps for the bonnet for a 60's race look), along with the odd extra rear lights!

Cool, you're too young for a house anyway! potential to be very cool, can have a bit of fun going slightly custom, slightly stock, but not so obvious kit. whats it like safety wise, when i saw my poor old kit stripped of its glass it looked very minimal skeleton wise

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Actually, the triple C cars were pretty damn good. Custom spaceframe mirroring the e type, except for a few details.. If I remember correctly, the spaceframes front and rear pass through the (GRP) tub where on the jag they tie into the bulkheads as subframes, and the rack is behind the track on the challenger annd in front on the E type. Is the brightwork real, or chromed ABS?

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I would love one of them and know I will never have the cash to buy a proper E type.

Loads of fun to be had. Enjoy that. 500 miles from "new"? Can't beat letting somebody else take the "hit" for all the labor and cash outlay. Just one of the all-time classic retro good lookers, without any pawing at the dirt, or silly justifications of "rare" or scene BS, or what a bunch of internet friends say about it. (Like us.) It's sculpture with a 'tude. Would love a turn at the wheel. Norm

hey, good choice..... you can always buy a house later, a Jag is always better than a house (mostly)... to make it an extra challenge, pick it up with having forgotten your mobile phone and expect to be good weather i think the first thing that has to go would be the steering wheel....

Cheers for the comments guys, glad you like. The steering wheel is very nasty isn't! Moto Lita do a proper replica one but at 300 quid its not cheap, correct front light covers are the same so this isn't going to be cheap! Thems the wheels I was talking about, very cool. Light weight is one of my favs too, but I already have a track car, so going to build this as a sunny day cruiser for trying to look cool in! Can't wait till the end of the month now ;D

I'd be fitting huge split rims- maybe 17x9 on the front and 17x11 on the back with big tyres, fit some headlight fairings, then fit some sort of interesting engine - a Supra TT should fit easily.
Then i'd take it to a classic car show and laugh at the moans from the duffers until they realised it was a replica.

Very nice.... I made myself the same promise, but I've yet to achieve it. I have an E-type woodrim wheel on the wall as a reminder.
If the brakes are okay, and it doesn't have the Series 2 XJ's Automatic Enrichment Device strapped to the carbs you have a good chance of getting it home. I've had an XK engine struggle on with a big hole in either side of the block and a rod and piston gone.
Okay, so now I'm well jealous, I'll have to console myself with coffee and going to mess with my XJ12 after work.
Regards
Ric

"Maddest plan ever...", I thought you were going to say "I'm keeping it stock". Now that would be mad. ;D
Cool car though, and in racing-spec/look it would be even better.
