Hurray! I FINALLY collected my 4.5 V8 and box - had fun and games getting it in the back of a Vauxhall Combo. It did some weird things on the corners as the lump shifted about!! It's loads bigger than I imagined, and a quick measure up with the tape measure shows that there's plenty of angle-grinding to be done!! Should be fun when it's done though - and not a bad buy as I got the lot off eBay for £31!!!! ;D (OK, it needs a head gasket but that doesn't bother me much) I'll post piccies when project gets under way.

Oooh sounds great!
Make sure you get plenty of pics, and keep a diary of the transplant on here!

Thats a fantastic deal. £3.87 per cylinder or £6.88 per litre. Either way, its a bargain.
Get grinding...

4.5? Damn, that must be an old se lump or similar - cast block isn't it?! Bit heavy then. Got one off eBay (3.5l) a few months ago. Took 4 of us to lift it in the car.
Whats it going in? Or have I missed some other threads describing exactly what you are up to?!

It's extremely heavy! We got it in the van using one of those Bobcat-type cranes and a lot of pushing! Getting it out was a bit less technical: we just shoved it inch by inch! It came from an old S-Class (W116) 450SEL, and it's going to be shoehorned into my smaller Merc W115, but the inner wings are gonna have to be slimmed down a helluva lot to get the thing in! I don't even know how I'm going to uprate the suspension to cope: The W115's biggest engine is the 280 straight six but I don't think even those springs will be heavy-duty enough to deal with the weight! May have to get some custom-made but that could be expensive (it's low-budget all the way for me! ) Then there's the propshaft, engine mounts, clearing the steering rack..... if I think too much about it I'll never do it! I will keep a diary of how it's going on this forum - I'm really bad with photographing my projects as I just tend to get stuck in and forget! But I'll try and snap regularly!

Not sure how much they cost but someone like Leda could recommend the correct poundage etc for the springs, or better still, some springs that you could pinch from another car.

Thanks Higgim - I must admit it's the most concerning aspect of this transplant so far, as it could cost £££. Having said that, a front pair of springs (non-Merc) for mine is £120, so I'm as bad burnt as scalded really!
